I'm way more interested in the new stuff since it seems to have a heavier focus on Aberrations which are always cool to me. Hopefully the remaster of LMOP helps clear up some of the issues I've seen some tables have (lack of focus).
Most of the fantasy campaigns I've run for new players is Lost Mines and most have gone on to play my own homebrew version of the Sword Coast. Will be interesting to see what WotC comes up with.
@@kingsfan2099 boring encounters and dull dungeon design, plus in a game so obsessed with balance the first creature (even before the monster manual) you encounter can one shot any level 1 and they immediately railroad you into a fight with three of them (I know this was later changed but I bought a box that was so broken it needed a "day one patch"). My table immediately abandoned it and used the starter box rules to play the chaotic caves instead.
DUUUUUUDE THE ALT COVER IS SICK!!! My party has been growing attached to Phandalin while playing Dragon of Icespire Peak so I would LOVE to grab this and adapt it into a post-DOIP adventure for them. I bet I could make it work for higher levels with enough tweaking~
You could run most of the original campaign as something of a light adventure for a higher level party and just let them roflestomp their way through most of it. Up to you whether to skip the side quests or not. Should you wish to pose more of a challenge you can definitely upgrade Venomfang to a higher CR, but probably most places you can just throw more enemies at the players or let them decide how much trouble they want to bite off at one time. You might want to find a bigger cave map for Cragmaw Cave so you can expand it to something more appropriate. Alternatively you might be able to add a different monster type that wasn't originally used and sprinkle them throughout where appropriate... Maybe some of those psionic goblins, or something.
I haven’t been this excited for a new campaign in a long time. I’m excited to see how they changed the original adventure. I really hope it’s well written.
I was very cold for this product, thinking of it as a starter box add on.. but I like the aberations and return of a villain. I think I'll get this. Very smart of them to provide people a way to extend play beyond the starter box.
I can’t wait to run this and explain the retcon to the original adventure by having my players characters wake up from the illusion of saving the “normal” Phandalin and discover to their horror that their minds were being toyed with, perhaps imprisoned by Glasstaff or the Black Spider, thus adding to the eldritch feel of this re-flavouring. (Explaining any irregularities and loose threads I left out in the process.) From there they can get their bearings and dive into the mind-bending madness this claims to deliver. So many established characters and story beats from my table’s version of the Starter Kit can be changed with that twist as we continue. So stoked!
Interesting... I already came up with a similar thread in an exp game... where it was like "you wake up in shackles" where a previous epic battle was retconned as a dream. While they didn't keep the epic loot, they did keep the exp. It was always a dream so maybe retcon was a bad word.... but they did keep exp and key information which was used as an advantage. I played LMoP as my first 5e D&D adventure as the DM. I liked it a lot. I hope to run this sequel for my group someday soon. Hope it will be good. My current already advanced their LMoP characters beyond 5th level so they need to create new PCs & I can run them through Dragon of Icespire Peak first.

I'm DMing Lost Mine of Phandelver right now. I guess i need to give it a look, maybe come back to phandalin a couple adventures after we finish the campaign
This sounds cool! But do they clean up/flesh out the character of the Black Spider? Because I found him lacking in motivation and there was contradictory advice in the book about how to play him.
I've bought but never run the Lost Mines of Phandelver. But I do like it. Interested to see that there's more past the last page of that first booklet, even though I'd have to buy the adventure again (even if it is remastered)

With the recent resurgence of D&D interest, I don't think there has ever been a better time for D&D to look into creating an animated series of classic beloved storylines (Dark Elf Trilogy comes to mind).
I was initially disappointed that this adventure was Levels 1-12, rather than 5-17, building upon LMoP and DoIP. Now, while still disappointed that we have yet another 1-12, it at least makes sense. Rather than building upon LMoP, they've rebuilt and included a version of LMoP.
I think you may be right but I didn't see too many hints in the alt cover. There was a skull but it had no eyes (instead of one) and there was a distinct lack of the hand motif. I hope it's Vecna though.
@@mooxim The hints of the obelisks being linked to Vecna were in ROTF, but there was very little besides that. Hell, the Vecna book might be a direct sequel and carry the party to lvl 20 (Fingers crossed!)
I got a copy of the book already. The Book says that the included Poster Map is for the Players, but it is clearly a DM-Map - showing a lot of Secret Locations like the Wave Echo Cave on the World Map. The individual Location Maps on the back even show Traps and Secret Passages. Is this Intentional?
If we preordered the bundle will we get the Alt Cover? Or is that only available from game stores? Looking at the image on the preorder page it would appear I'll have to buy a 2nd copy locally to get the alt cover.
I've tried running LMoP with 4 of my friends some time ago and the Cragmaw Hideout in the beginning of the game resulted in a TPK. It seemed very likely that at least one player would die, having in mind the low health pool of the players and the number of opponents. How are 4 lvl 1 characters supposed to beat 15 goblins, 1 bugbear and at least 1 wolf? According to the rules both in the DMG and XGtE, some of the encounters there go way beyond deadly. Let's take the 4 characters group of lvl 1 as an example. An encounter would be deadly to them if the total monster XP reaches 400. In the Goblin Den there are 6 goblins * 50 XP = 300 XP. With the multiplier of 2 that totals 600 XP which makes that encounter alone 1.5 times deadlier than the "deadly" in the DMG (p. 82). Klarg's Cave is even worse with a total of 700 XP. Not only that, but the expected XP for an adventuring day for that group of characters would be 1200 XP (DMG p. 84). The Goblin Arrows and the Cragmaw Hideout combined total 2500 XP which is also an overkill. How is that whole thing supposed to work? Especially for brand new players and DMs like us? Either (1) the monsters should be severely weakened/their numbers lowered, (2) the characters should be initially buffed or (3) the group of players should consist of at least 8 lvl 1 characters for the difficulty level to be less than deadly as per the DMG.

A whole world to explore... Nah, let's go to the same town again.
