It truly was an honor to march both of these shows. I’m so glad that it made such a massive and positive impact on the community. We always talk about how we want our shows to touch hearts and change lives and we’re always satisfied and happy to hear that we achieved that.

I'm totally not sitting here crying or anything.
My band also played Fly To Paradise the same year in 2017 and this song holds such a special place in my heart. I had the pleasure of being able to watch this show live at a competition and when I heard that drop, I started crying just now. Especially knowing the story behind this show and the loss this band suffered. This show is so gorgeous and has such a beautiful message 🙏 Thank you for sharing this.

I originally wasn’t a fan of this show at the beginning of the year, I loved the concept and why they chose this show. I just didn’t think it had very much of a wow factor to it, but when I saw the closer for the first time, I cried a little. So beautiful and the sound this band puts out is absolutely amazing. I love the emotion put into this show, and you can hear it when they play and I can’t get enough of it

Although we aren't competitively marching this year, I am taking the time to look back at the many memories that I have experienced being in marching band, as I am a Junior now. I specifically remember one song in particular, Fly to Paradise, that really caught my attention last year. So, today, I remembered the song name and decided to look at other marching band arrangements playing this, and I had no idea Castle played this 2 years ago! Last year we went to a competition in Castle, and we were told about the story of Sophie. Let me just say, this is one of the best band shows I have ever seen from a high school, and I know Sophie would be proud of you guys. So much emotion is being felt right now.

I thought I’d write down and share why I regard this performance as the most magnificent one I’ve ever seen. I’m neither a total expert on music, nor am I just a casual fan, I suppose “Advanced Amateur” would be a good term for me. Here is what I see the show as being about.
If you have not done so, watch the video about Sophie… th-cam.com/video/w6WFfawZHMk/w-d-xo.html
This show is a memorial to her. It is indeed a compilation of gorgeous modern works of music put together in the grand tradition of a mass. This show is a Requiem Mass for Sophie. The four songs rather sound as if they could have been composed by the same person, they share having a sweet moving catch melody that breaks into minor chords and three swell to great fanfare moments.
The first song, Fly Away, is a song composed in 1980 as a swinging jazz song, but used wonderfully as a ballad in the movie Moulin Rouge. Please, please watch this - th-cam.com/video/4N7VK7vHwnw/w-d-xo.html. I believe this represents Sophies hopes and dreams as a young person trapped in the world of modern high school with all its built in challenges of adolescence combined with “Where do I go from here”. I see this song as being Sophie on November 12, 2016, at Grand Nats. This song is the Kyrie/Gloria of Sophies Mass.
The second song, The Hand of Fate is by James Newton Howard. If you listen to the “Signs” Movie soundtrack, th-cam.com/video/YFGK2RFUQLs/w-d-xo.html for which the song was written, it is itself a gamut of emotions song. The part of the song performed in the show is a somewhat brutish bit that makes a fitting Dies Irea (Day of Wrath). I see this representing the gut wrenching and heartbreak of the predawn on November 13, 2016 when Sophie lost her life in utterly senseless circumstances. This song is the Sequentia of the mass and defines it as a Requiem.
The third song Benedictus by Karl Jenkins is a just such a lush amazing song, it heavily features a flute which is the instrument Sophie played. I look at this as representing her funeral, and as a reflection of the beautiful things in life she enjoyed. The flute player does a wonderful job on the field. I like how this bit is reminiscent of the 2016 Castle show where Sophie was doing a back and forth with the other flute, here the flute and saxophone echo that. Also during this part of the show the color guard does a dance with a long semi flexible prop. I think of the prop as representing a tread or musical wave that brings people together and the guard does a lovely job with this. Sophie was one who believed that music is meant to bring people together. The euphonium solo does a great job playing a somber beautiful low complimentary melody which adds a lot of gravity to the piece, I can’t help but put the words “Requiem in Aternum” to the Euphonium solo. Here is good example of the work - th-cam.com/video/ibwxzxER_pY/w-d-xo.html I think it represents a Lux Aeterna of the mass.
    The final piece Fly to Paradise by Eric Whitacre is at once celebratory and sad. It is based on a work that was set to a virtual choir in which almost 6,000 performed and contributed to produce a grand song. th-cam.com/video/Y8oDnUga0JU/w-d-xo.html Parts of that choir track are sampled and played back as the work is played on field, again bringing up the point that music is bringing people together. Fly to Paradise makes up the In Paradisum of the mass, part of which reads;
May the Angels lead thee into paradise
may the Martyrs receive thee at thy coming,
May the choir of Angels receive thee,
and mayest thou have eternal rest ………
The Amen, at the end, as the flag representing Sophies spirit goes off the field is such a beautiful conclusion.
And That, is why, IMHO, this show ranks as a Masterpiece in Music. I hope others recognize the gravity of this show. It has touched me deeper than anything I have ever heard, sung, or played.

I fell in love with castle last year after I heard about Sophie. I know what it feels like to lose a member of the program because it happened to my band last year before the season started. I can feel the emotion even through this recording, and it's amazing, I know Sophie is proud of you guys, I wish you guys the best of luck next year and hope that you keep growing and reaching new heights as a program. We also played flight of paradise as our closer this year but the arrangement wasn't anywhere near as good as yours.

I watched this video earlier tonight without knowing any of the back story behind it, my first time hearing Castle. After listening, I had already made up my mind that this practice performance was the most heartfelt and sumptuous musical performance by a marching band that I had ever heard...I was in HS Marching, Elkhart Central, 1978-1980, and part of an amazing university program from 1987-1989, over the last 6 years I have seen hundreds of BOA and Texas UIL programs, as well as numerous Florida bands where my son is a Senior in the local HS. I wanted to see your finals show and in searching found out about Sophie, now my heart is broken open and knowing the context of this show, it transcends really any musical performance I've ever seen or heard.

2021 and that opener NEVER fails to give me chills… quite possibly my FAVORITE opener anyone has ever done ❤️ just the sound that the band produces on the big hit, it literally sounds like the THX sound effect with how it just creeps in. It’s not a harsh staccato downbeat but more of a gong-like effect of a downbeat. I just can’t get enough of it…

  • @vidalrodriguez2001

Everything that this show is should have bands and directors wanting to embody the emotion, the beauty of the sounds the soloists and ensemble creates, the gorgeous and flourishing opener that I just can’t get enough of hearing anytime I go back to watch this! The mood of the ballad, the very personal melancholy of it and the Euph solo is amazing. The closer and epilogue embodying the hope that Sophie brought and the triumph of the spirit of those affected by this tragedy is just truly poignant and beautiful everytime I watch this. My heart is with every one of those who overcame it all and put together this show for all of us with its both very personal and universal message, it really inspires me in believing that shows like this, rare to come by, can be achieved by anyone if students are given direction to feel and embody the emotion of whatever it is they’re playing, and make something truly meaningful to them, reminding me of why I love marching band and the activity❤️My heart goes out to the Castle high school band.

Had to watch it a bunch before posting my comments. It was an absolutely beautiful show. Never have I heard a choral piece (yes, Bliss/Fly To Paradise was originally a choral work by Eric Whitacre) being used so masterfully on a marching field. I am trying to return to school myself in the fall of 2018 and when the time comes for me to become a head band director and create shows of my own I hope to make a lasting impression as this show has. I literally gasped so loud it was a scream when I heard the big push of Bliss/Fly To Paradise/Lux Nova.

The performance is able to be seen again if you look. I have to say, that as great as the music is, which in my opinion is the best musical performance ever, the drill was not as complex as others. The visuals were minimal, which is fine, but it seems the judges are looking for "More Stuff" perhaps. And again, at risk of sounding like a bung, the execution of the drill was a bit imprecise at times. Keep in mind that they placed 8th out of 100 bands that showed up for Grand Nats...To even be selected as a finalist makes a band the best that there is, the 1st - 12th place is just a subjective assessment by a group of people that happened to be judging that night. I for one do not care a bit for the Avon, Woodlands, Tarpon Springs (Not at Grand Nats) and Carmel show styles, a big meh from me. Dobyns-Bennett, Marcus, Flower Mound, Castle, and Broken Arrow would be my top 5. But All 12 Bands Are Champions!!!
