I never can understand who down votes these great instructional videos. I appreciate time the time that it takes to put this together to educate others. Well done and thank you!
coordination of different practical techniques is what is needed in a video: you spot a rock "point" on that side scan, you mark the point, then either use the Goto function to get right to it, or, grab the coordinates, insert them into your spot lock and again, Goto and hold there, etc......individually, none of these technical marvels really shine until it is demonstrated how to use them TOGETHER to truly put yourself right on the structural element that you see on the screen.
I've watched so many videos on so many different units and their features and for the first time somebody puts it in the sense of two flashlights being shined out each side. 🤯🤯🤯 so simple but dangit if that wasn't the comment that after years of using my unit actually really helped me think of it in a different way.
I think I finally understand side imaging! I’m going to buy a good fish finder for my kayak. I have a very basic one that tells me water depth, temp. and if there are fish. It’s the little HawkEye and has served its purpose. After lots of reading and window shopping the top three brands, I’ve decided on the Garmin UHD2 73sv. I really don’t care about all the maps and stuff like that. I just want good screen resolution and to be able to read what is in the screen. Towards the end of this video when you zoomed in talking about the shadows, I saw the fish outline! On other people’s videos, they talk fast and move around on the screen to much and I can’t keep up. Yours was short and easily explained. I’m a slow learner, but once I catch on, I’ve got it…
Thank your for this video I'm not a sailor haven't been on a boat before.. I'm so fascinated by the videos I watch I wanted to be able to understand what they looking at when they are sailing.. wow this is so so cool
Holy Shit, I came to look at Side Scan Sonar because it's been in the UK news regarding Nikola (Nickler) Bulley. Then at 2:02 on the left side of the display a Woman's face appears horizontally like this :-) under the number 50 , her legs would be the dark patch on the right display area.
I bought a Hummingbird SI the first year they came out. It was only a five inch screen and I paid 999.99 plus the mapping lol. I still use it today, but this spring I'm going mega. I won AOY in my club this year with only one depth finder at the console. I know I looked crazy running to the back of my boat to get the drop on a fish lol. Great video and camera is o on point, thanks.
Good stuff Tim. I thought I was up to speed on my SI unit but you have given me more info to help better utilize this valuable feature. And I agree with Tim Kelly - the quality of the footage is noticeably better!
These videos on electronics are great! Can you all do one on how to use side imaging bluff walls. Also more in-depth of setting up the units. Thank y’all!
Great videoTim. One or two small observations from many other vids on SI. One about running width of screen left or right out to 3X what you have in depth. I think the reason for this condensing of width allows a higher density of pixels in a smaller screen area which in turn gives the user a higher definition picture on the screen. I noticed when you went to set a weigh point or zooming in on that ball of bait, you knew it was 20 ft.or a little better to the right, but this will also show how many feet behind the boat from where you are now. I know on the Helix units a drop down screen comes on and gives you pretty precise locations. Your pretty finned friends don't stand a chance anymore. Keep up the fantastic work.
I have a Solix 12. Struggling to get the right settings and this video has the best clarity Ive seen out there from everyone. Would you mind sharing your settings from this video?
I still struggle some to comprehend the pictures and what I'm actually looking at sometimes but this video helped more than probably any other video. I guess practice practice practice.
this is great! i would like more in depth videos on this. i literally just bought a helix 9 si mega today can’t wait to get it on the boat and try it out
That hummingbird unit is crisp & clear.very good detail.i just bought a garmim 9" with a gt54 transducer.i am having problems getting that clear crisp image.idk if its because my ducer is not placed properly or if its just not as good as a humminbird.
Great intro video. This seems like a great opportunity for a series of videos from intro to advanced. Would be really interested in learning how you use side imaging for grass fishing.
At the 4:20 point in your video, you show a school of bass herding some baitfish and you note that they are 25 feet off of your starboard. Some explanations of side scan state that the real distance is what is shown on your graph less the depth of water that you are in. Can you clarify?
Amazing video - thank you. At 3:48, acknowledging that the school of fish at 25ft out to the right. My question is where in relation to the boat. Are they directly out to the right (lets say 90 degrees if the bow is 0 degrees) in this screenshot or are they 45 degrees or 135 degrees etc.?
Why do all the pre-rigged boats come with Minn Kota TM’s and Lowrance units? Triton does it with the TrX Patriots and Ranger does it with the Ranger Cup boats. If I had it my way I’d go with an Ultrex, 2 12-inch Solix units, and Minn Kota Raptor poles. That 360 imaging is a game changer!
Sometimes y’all are as creepy as Facebook and amazon. Lol I start googling stuff and then, BOOM! Y’all make a video about it. 😂😂😂 love the content. Favorite channel fellas
Nice film. Have you got a new camera, the quality of the footage seems better than normal, great colours and contrast and a shallow depth of field, Looks superb.
Agee, great camera. Puts GoPro to shame! Love when you show various side scans and telling us what you see. Toys are nice but knowing how to use them makes them even better!
@ 3:55 looking at the depth which is at 26ft of water and side imaging capturing the small scool of fish at 25 ft chasing the scool of bait fish is actually right under the boat , and the reason why the bigger fish is showing up on the right side more so on the left although if u look closely they still appear at the same depth on the left side is because it seems that the scool of fish was corralling the bait from the bottom of the scool, chasing the bait back to the bank from right to left. All in all the fish was directly under the boat, not saying tim was wrong, but thats just my 2 cents from what goes on in my head on the water if i where to see that image. 👍
it is the water column under the boat. The white line is the path of the keel and the present boat's location is at the top of the screen at the end of that white line. The wider the 'black" area, the deeper the water under the keel.
Great video. We have a Helix 12 Mega unit and don't get that good of side imaging. Really struggle to see any fish at all and sonar shows fish and we hook them. A lot of areas the fish are suspended so they should be easier to see than right on the bottom. I'm also running a left and right Si and a 2d Sonar transducer. Been wondering how it would work with just one transducer. Sort of frustrated. We live in Newberg, Oregon and have not been able to find a Humminbird expert or someone real knowledgeable to help. Thanks
Great video Tim and thanks for sharing your insights on this. How can you tell the depth of for example some rocks off to the side. I want to use it for scouting an area to anchor my larger boat, so I'd be scanning the bay or area for any rocks that are closer to surface, as I need a minimum of 5' of depth? Thanks.
Excellent educational video. Would you please share the settings you used? Contrast, Sharpness, etc.? Also, I agree with the comments below on the quality of the picture! Usually these kinds of videos have a lot of glare.
I'm looking to buy a new fish finder. Mostly fish reservoirs here in Northern Cali. Do you recommend side imaging? Gonna go with a Humminbird from Tackle Warehouse because of you gentlemen! Thanks for any replies!
My question is, when using side scan do you use it primarily to look for structure or look for fish? If I find a nice rock shelf or structure with side scan, but don't really see fish on it, should I just keep moving? Even if it looks like a good spot? Trying to understand what the strategy is when using side scan. I just got a new unit and am adjusting to the new technology.
The answer to your question is "Yes". If you found a rocky point holding bait and bass, does that mean there will be bass on it all the time? And if you find a similar rocky point that is NOT holding bait and bass, does it mean there is never fish on that location? I hope you answered "NO" to both questions. Structure is LIKELY to hold bass, especially if other criteria is present. (Food, security, clarity, comfort, proximity, among others). I AM going to look for structure and features I believe should hold bass. I will fish some of those even when I don't see bass. Obviously, seeing bass is a confidence booster
One question I have. I know the black is the water column directly under your boat. Then the distance to the left or right is also displayed on the screen. But shouldn't the distant left and right restart at zero from the bottom? Is it actually 60, 80, 100 feet out?
I believe that is correct. I don't think he described it very well. If your setting is set to 100 yards, and you are in 20 feet of water, I am almost sure you are getting 80 on both sides. You do need to account for the depth of water you are in.
Easiest way to "see" side imaging is to tilt your head. To look at the right side image....tilt head left. To look at the left side image....tilt head right. EASY !
Great video, very informative. I've never had side imagine before but I will have it in a few weeks, looking forward to it. I feel not many people use it here in New Zealand
What size Hummingbird do you prefer? I'm thinking about picking up a Helix 9 for the console and a 10 for the bow. Interested to hear your perspective. Thx.
Wow. This is from 4 years ago. The clarity is amazing. I'm sure it's even better now. I can't wait to look up newer stuff.

BEST SIMPLE EXPLAINATION FOR A NEW OWNER OF SIDE IMAGE
Awesome please continue with sonar, I am a beginner and need this kind of help. Thank you
I've watched so many videos on so many different units and their features and for the first time somebody puts it in the sense of two flashlights being shined out each side. 🤯🤯🤯 so simple but dangit if that wasn't the comment that after years of using my unit actually really helped me think of it in a different way.
Best instructor on TH-cam for electronics. Don’t know why anyone would give this or any of Tim’s teaching videos a thumbs down.
One of the best videos to help me understand my sonar . Thanks

These videos are awesome. A ton more informative and entertaining than a manual.
Thank your for this video I'm not a sailor haven't been on a boat before.. I'm so fascinated by the videos I watch I wanted to be able to understand what they looking at when they are sailing.. wow this is so so cool
One of the best things to happen to fishing ever! You know how to use it is a game changer! Another great video!
Thanks! Definitely a great tool!
Are You A School Teacher ??? Great Job !!!! You Keep It Simple !!! thanks !!!!

Did also say that he was scanning 100 feet to the right and 100 feet to the left. Another great video by you tubes best thanks tactical
Great video, Tim did an awesome job of breaking down in the quickest easiest way...
Very noticeable upgrade in video gear. Looks great. And thanks for the side view info, I need to start learning my Garmin setup
Very helpful and informative, like most everything practice, practice and more practice. Keep up the good work.

Thats awesome Brian! I use to do the same thing when I only had one unit on my boat. Congrats on AOY!
Good stuff Tim. I thought I was up to speed on my SI unit but you have given me more info to help better utilize this valuable feature. And I agree with Tim Kelly - the quality of the footage is noticeably better!
You got a new camera! The resolution looks great and as usual I learned a lot from the video. Thanks and keep them coming.
Great explanation of how to interpret side imaging! That solix 15 is a beast
Awesome content as always! Thanks to Matt and Tim for always producing top quality, very informative videos, best on TH-cam!!
Instablaster
Great video guys. Side Imaging is key now a days to find the winning fish.
Man that new camera has an awesome picture. Nice upgrade!!
Wow! I don’t even own a boat but this explains a lot. Thanks!
Thanks Alias!
Can't wait for the follow up videos.
Been wanting to buy a solix 10 for my Hobie. Thanks for the class😎👍
The images you get on that solix inspire me to go buy a 12-inch unit
They are crazy clear!
Another very informative video from tactical! Best on you tube!
Thank you Bryan!
These videos on electronics are great! Can you all do one on how to use side imaging bluff walls. Also more in-depth of setting up the units. Thank y’all!
Bravi, bellissimo canale TH-cam, vi seguo dall'Italia

I like side imaging for trolling, helps me push rite up to the weeds but stay out of them...
Awesome video. Great quality!! Keep em coming! Y’all should be on the network channels!
Damn I did side scan sonar in the US Navy. It's a bit crazy to see it in the hands of fisherman now.
I still struggle some to comprehend the pictures and what I'm actually looking at sometimes but this video helped more than probably any other video. I guess practice practice practice.
Where is your transducer mounted in this video?
I dont have side scan, but would like a entry level unit for Crappie.
So much to learn.
this is great! i would like more in depth videos on this. i literally just bought a helix 9 si mega today can’t wait to get it on the boat and try it out
excellent video, good job
Another great video. I am going to show this to my old man! He has the hardest time understanding what im looking at
Awesome video, lots of useful information! 👊👌
Awesome vid, these are great I’m like a sponge trying to soak in as much info as I can about graphs
Thanks! We will continue to add these electronic vids in throughout the year
Thanks for the video Tim, you guys are great thanks for the positive videos!
Excellent video
That hummingbird unit is crisp & clear.very good detail.i just bought a garmim 9" with a gt54 transducer.i am having problems getting that clear crisp image.idk if its because my ducer is not placed properly or if its just not as good as a humminbird.
This is an excellent quality video! Keep up the great work you guys!!
Thanks it is always nice to learn more about how to interpert sonor
Yesss. More sonar series!
Great video. Looking forward to video on frequencies.
Thanks Donald!
Great job Tim 👊👊👍👍
Great intro video. This seems like a great opportunity for a series of videos from intro to advanced. Would be really interested in learning how you use side imaging for grass fishing.
Thanks Dustin! We will continue to add these types of videos in throughout the year.
Excellent video.... thanks for sharing
Awesome video.. straight to the point. Thanks
Great video! alot of information!
Awesome, thanks man. I have that but dont really now what I was looking at till now.✌
About time! More!
great video! answered alot of my questons
Good video, more please.
Thanks! Will do

Yes I made the switch to the Sony A7iii and some better lenses. Thanks for noticing Tim!
@@tacticalbassin Once again, TacticalBassin raises the bar for YT fishing education! Big Texas thanks!
@@tacticalbassin I noticed right away too. Looks great!
Agee, great camera. Puts GoPro to shame! Love when you show various side scans and telling us what you see. Toys are nice but knowing how to use them makes them even better!

Do you have a suggestion on a affordable entry level for a side imaging unit for a kayak?
Thank you!
Good video 👌
