The really wild part is that a Kinect is still a stock system for a lot of machine vision applications in academia, I know a few people who've used them in projects. They're surprisingly acceptable now there's documentation on how to actually use them.
We've got some hooked up in the geology lab with a kinetic (ba-doom tish) sand pit and projector to make 3D topography maps on the fly and model flooding and stuff. It's a surprisingly versatile piece of tech - the profs love them cause their usually pretty cheap for what they can do. I still have a hard time reconciling the cool stuff we use them for in academia with the bug fest of smacking walls and siblings that was my experience as a kid using them for their intended gaming purposes 😅

Apparently, some people actually use it in VRChat because the Kinect is surprisingly good at capturing motion. It's basically just a case of the games of the time not implementing it well.

Fun fact: Sonic Free Riders was a Kinect continuation of the Riders series, where the Sonic characters had hoverboards and raced with them. It is notable for having some of the most well-designed courses on the series, some pretty fun items, incredible customization options, and a godawful control system that was made only bearable by the fact the motions required were just tilting your body and jumping
ah man, i really forgot just how nostalgic the music used in the Kinect games are. i only had a PS2 and a modded Xbox original until, like, 2013 when the family got a 360 with a kinect. i was so used to classics and weird shovelware gameboy ROMs that something so new was absolutely mind boggling to me, hearing the music i remember the smell of the resort we were at, how the sun was shining so bright yet it was still chilly, and even the taste of the gum i was chewing practically the whole time we were there. such good times. did you know you can throw the bowling ball into the crowd? i remember there being an achievement for it as well as breaking the floor, and on the javelin throw, you can throw it so damn hard it goes past every single landmark and impales a screen on the opposite end of the field. man, i actually want to play kinect now. Kinect Adventure was a great one too, i love the one with the balls bouncing off the back wall like a game of Breakout, i played the hell out of fruit ninja kinect (which actually has a VR edition now), and there was a game called Wreckateer that i played a helluva lot. i tweeted that there should be a VR version of it and the devs even liked my post i'll never forget the time i spent playing Halo 4 on legendary difficulty just so i could get the Praetorian or whatever helmet for my avatar so i could use it in the Kinect games, too. or was it a master chief helmet? or... was one of them for getting a back assassination on the praetorian? it's been so long... oh, and because the boxing segment reminded me, i remember one time my brother, dad and i were all playing it at his house shortly after the divorce and my younger brother literally pissed himself laughing in the middle of two-player boxing. kinda weird that that, of all things, is so ingrained in my memory
Kinect sports was a blast, anyone who didn't get a Wii but a Kinect instead knows the feeling of watching your gramma throw a bowling ball without breaking the tv while doing it.
The best use of the Kinect that I played with was in Skyrim. You got to command your followers, re-organize chests by different filters, and actually shout your shouts in game. Honestly pretty cool for 12 year old me in 2014.
This game was a part of my childhood. I had this instead of a Wii and Wii Sports so this game was my Wii Sports and I remember being pretty damn good at it. Especially the bowling. It honestly worked really well a lot of the time and was sometimes a bit of a workout depending on how long you played with family. The highlights at the end would always make us laugh. So if you have this at home still, maybe break it out for a family gathering 😂

Fun fact, my town used to have some sort of a summer program where kids could sign up for different courses/clubs, usually either for free or at a small fee. One of the clubs, organised by my IT teacher was a "computer club", where our teacher brought her own Kinect from home and we literally played THIS GAME (and this game only) for 2 weeks straight, everyday

One of my friends back in the late 2000s/early 2010s had a Kinect and I distinctly remembering using it to play Just Dance. Fun fact, my town used to have some sort of a summer program where kids could sign up for different courses/clubs, usually either for free or at a small fee.
One of the clubs, organised by my IT teacher was a "computer club", where our teacher brought her own Kinect from home and we literally played THIS GAME (and this game only) for 2 weeks straight, everyday
the kinect was so revolutionary at the time as a paperweight, really groundbreaking stuff they made there

I can't wait for the Star Wars Kinect video, I actually played that one when I was younger and legitimately enjoyed it. My favorite was the rancor game, I played it regularly.

One of my friends back in the late 2000s/early 2010s had a Kinect and I distinctly remembering using it to play Just Dance. The controls were more accurate than with the Wii (where only the one arm seemed to matter) but I was too young to really judge its quality outside of that

I remember playing one of the jumping games with my dad and because you had to jump I still remember when the replay came on at the end and we saw my dad fail to jump and fall flat on his face in stop motion
Ok but this game is legit so much fun if you have people over, we've spent many hours on Kinect Sports 1 & 2 with family and friends.

I legitimately loved playing Kinect games when I was younger. My favourites were Kinectimals, Kinect Adventures, and Sonic Free Riders.
I remember playing a 2 player Sesame Street game with this thing with my dad when I was a little kid. we went through the whole game I loved it.
I used to play lots of kinect sports with my friend back in the day. While playing golf i used to stand like a baseball player holding a bat, not a club.
My siblings and I would play this anytime we had a chance to. We also loved Kinect Adventures. That game is legendary.
Kinect sports 2 is such an upgrade i swear, that was my childhood
