Shigeru Kawai SK6 at NAMM 2020 (featuring Bigfoot)

  • It all started as an ordinary piano review. A Shigeru Kawai SK6, a very nice piano handcrafted in Japan. It played Debussy and Bach well, and everything was normal. It sounds rather thin on recording, and I think that has something to do with the NAMM environment. I don't remember it sounding quite that thin, although it was not as fat and warm as Shigeru Kawais of the past. Then I decided to play Beethoven, which summoned two strange beasts from the depths of Anaheim, who danced to the music and had a great time!

    I'm impressed at how well you kept your composure and played through that difficult third movement, with the Bigfoot entertainment going on. So dedicated to your music. You remind me of Schroeder of "Peanuts" fame.

    I own a Shigeru Kawai SK6, and it’s incredible. The action is amazingly light and fluid, and extremely responsive. And I absolutely love the warm, singing tone. When I first got my piano, I had a couple of notes that had ringing in them - perhaps like that metallic sound you were referring to. After it got proper tech attention and over time, that changed. I love my piano. I have a large living room space with high ceilings and it’s a perfect match in terms of the sound projection. It’s nice to see you giving it attention. By the way, I have also played a 7’ Fazioli (the SK6 is 7’). The action was also excellent, but I prefer the tone of the SK6, which seems warmer to me. But we all have our own ears and experience. Again, thanks for bringing this piano to the attention of more people. I do have a very serious problem, however, and perhaps you have some thoughts. I am old, chronically ill and crippled, and a piano’s action determines whether or not I can even play it. For example, I can’t even easily play an SK5. I have played some Steinways, the SK6 on up and the Fazioli, and I am able to play. However, I have not been able to find digital keyboard that has an action that is light and responsive. I love the Dexibell keyboards, the Platinum pianos, for the sound, but I struggle with the action. Did you happen to try the new H10 piano? I have tried Nord, Roland and more and have not be able to have a satisfactory experience. I like being able to utilizing many kinds of sounds and do the 3-layer playing as well. For that reason and a few others, I would like to have a digital keyboard. I own the Dexibell P3, which I can take out and perform on, but the action is terrible for me, and I have tried several of their other ones. Any suggestions? How is the H10? Anything else come to mind that has a light, fluid responsive action and awesome sound? Perfect if portable, but okay if not. I don’t know if you will be responding, but I hope so.

      I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties, but I'm glad you have such a wonderful instrument at home to play! As far as a digital piano with a light action is concerned, I have not played the H10, the Dexibell booth at NAMM was very busy and I had many things to do. The Nord Stage 3 has a very light action and lots of features, have you tried that? It's not my first recommendation for a digital piano but if you need a very light action, that definitely has one.

      ThePianoforever
      Thank you. No, I tried the Nord Piano 4, and it was very tough. Is this a weighted keyboard? I have found the semi-weighted keys even harder to play because it’s like you have to push the keys down in an unnatural way. Looking forward to your reply. There is no Nord Stage 3 around for me to test. Thank you so much.

    • @BethGreenTV
      @BethGreenTV 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThePianoforever Actually I see the Stage 3 has three options - the 88-key fully weighted hammer action is just one. Then there’s the 76 key weighted one but not labeled as full weighted and then there is the waterfall semi-weighted. I wonder if the “weighted” one is like the Piano 4 that I had so much trouble with. It also has the Fatar. I tried the Dexibell S7Pro with the Fatar graded hammer action. Very hard. I have the P3 portable now, which is just weighted but not fully weighted, and it’s very problematic too. So I’d like to know which one you have in mind. By the way, you might want to try some Dexibells. The sound is awesome.

    Yes, there are some weak sounds here and there as you pointed out. It's still a nice piano to have. Am not a fan of heavily weighted piano keyboard either as they easily tire the fingers.

    I know I am just hearing this on my cell phone but that's how I generally listen to all of your recordings and it appears that the Kawai piano sound quality is very good does not seem to have the same dynamic range and/or contrast as the other pianos that I've come to love. Such as the 90 eighties and nineties Steinway or the later model Borsendor.

    • @ThePianoforever
      @ThePianoforever  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bosendorfers are wonderful, as are 90's Steinways. I like the Shigeru Kawais but they aren't quite as special as they were several years ago. They had a warm fuzzy sound unlike anything else on the market, now they strongly remind me of Yamaha. Still good, just not as unique as they once were.

    Hi James, did you see any Seilers there? I recently had a chance to play a Seiler SE 208 German made piano and I was absolutely blown away. To my ears, it was better than a Shigeru, better than a Yamaha CX/SX, better than Steinway B, better than Schimmel, and many of the other top brands I've played. Of course it's subjective, but to my ears it wasn't even really close. Supreme piano.

    Good piano, but from what I hear it is almost great. If you understands me. I miss the big sound that I expect by this kind of piano. Maybe it’s the environment, maybe it’s because of the lid is not total opened. I don’t know but still a good sound. Nice that Bigfoot! And you didn’t miss a note. That’s the real professional! This is the typical Kawai sound, I like it, if I had to buy an asian piano I'd definitely choose Kawai. It's a little thin but clear, it's the Kawai signature. It usually has a very smooth action. The action on a Shigeru series I expect it's the "Kawai Millennium III" made of composite.
    The "metallic" note it's probably the string next to the harp frame.

    • @marianneoelund2940
      @marianneoelund2940 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't use "thin" to describe the Kawai sound, but sometimes there can be a little weakness if it's voiced down. It depends on the preference of the technician who regulated it at the factory. Since pianos brighten up with use, they are often intentionally voiced down a little to begin with, and the technician decides to what degree.
      Shigeru action is amazingly even and consistent and yes, it's Millennium III as in the GX series but has Shigeru-unique hammers and more extensive regulating work. Only specific parts are composite, such as whipple, jack, hammer anchors, etc., and the other parts are wood.
      Bass crossover is between F#2 and G2, so the D2 and D#2 that James discussed are not next to a harp strut. I've noticed a few notes on my new GX-6 which can exhibit some harsh sound especially on repetition (G3, D4, D#4) and I will see if some voicing will address it.

    • @pianomanic71
      @pianomanic71 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also wouldn't use thin to describe the tonality of the Kawai...unless you are listening to any 7' piano on the internet. In person the sounding board is about 70 times larger than the typical speaker. It's actually very full and warm with plenty of depth.
