  • Hello everyone! Today we are going to talk about the ITF Taekwon-do Belt Order & Color Meanings. The belt system used by those of us that practice Taekwon-do, according to the teachings of General Choi Hong Hi.
    White Belt - This is where everyone begins. The color white symbolizes the student’s innocence and ignorance of Taekwon-do. (A student with a white belt is classified as 10th Gup.)
    White Belt with Yellow Stripe - This is the next step, and the only step that is sometimes skipped for quick-learning students. (9th Gup)
    Yellow Belt - The first full color, this belt means that the student is beginning to learn and create a foundation in taekwondo. The color yellow represents the ground or earth in which the seed of knowledge has been planted and will grow.
    Yellow Belt with Green Stripe
    Green Belt - This belt is a milestone. The student’s taekwondo knowledge and experience is growing at a good pace now. The color green represents the plant as it sprouts and begins to grow.
    Green Belt with Blue Stripe
    Blue Belt - At this point, the student should have a good foundation in taekwondo and is prepared to begin learning more advanced techniques and theories. The color represents the sky toward which the plant reaches as it matures into a tree.
    Blue Belt with Red Stripe
    Red Belt - The red belt is a student who knows quite a bit about taekwondo, enough to be dangerous. Now, the student must learn control, a crucial skill. The color red signifies danger, warning others to stay away and reminding the student to practice control.
    Red Belt with Black Stripe
    Black Belt (1st degree) - This is the end of the introductory stages. On average, this rank takes 3-5 years to reach. Traditionally, only after achieving the rank of black belt, is the pupil considered to be true student of taekwondo. It is without a doubt a great mark of progress, but is far from the end. Truly, it is only the beginning. The definition of the color black is simple the opposite of the color white.
    Novice Black Belt (1st-3rd degree) - This first three ranks of black belt are designated as Novice. The student should concentrate on perfecting (or at least thoroughly understanding) the basics that they have learned while also learning a good bit of new material. The student is also considered an Assistant Instructor during these ranks, addressed as Bo-Sabum.
    Expert Black Belt (4th-6th degree) On average, the student has been an actively training and advancing black belt for 9-10 years before they may test for 4th degree. It is a very serious achievement, the student having been training as a black belt about twice as long as they were a colored belt. During this stage, the student should have enough understanding of taekwondo to begin pursuing theory more deeply. Many students begin to specialize as well. The student is considered an Instructor and is addressed as Sabum.
    Master Black Belt (7th-8th degree) - Students who achieve this rank have probably been an active black belt for close to 30 years. They are very knowledgeable. At this point, the student is no longer allowed to compete at most tournaments. (Feel free to join me in pondering this.) There are no more formal examinations to gain rank after this point. The student is expected to pursue further knowledge about taekwondo with little or no oversight. Most masters only teach other black belts, leaving the colored belts to the lower ranks. The student is now called Sa-Hyong, or Master Instructor.
    Grandmaster (9th degree) - The ultimate rank in traditional taekwondo, there are very few who have made it this far and they are considered to be the greatest experts on the art of taekwondo. The student is now called Grandmaster or Sa-Song.

    Novice practitioners tend to fear black belts. To my personal experience "colorful" belts cause more injuries during training and sparring than black belts because they can't control their techniques yet.

    • @NoraTKD
      @NoraTKD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is absolutely true. A colour belt is more dangerous to others and to themselves as well, because they cannot control their techniques yet.

      Fun fact in some schools of tea-kwon-do the black belt means that the belt is dirty. White meaning clean and new, once the belt is black it is dirty from all the work and sweat.

      White Belt is Innocence as Tae Kwon Do training begins
      Yellow belt signifies the seed that takes root.
      Green Belt is the tree , the growth
      Blue Belt is the direction to the sky
      Red Belt signifies fear, warning the opponent to stay away.
      Black Belt is the opposite to white and therefore signifies the wearers immunity to darkness or fear.

    Hi Nora! I enjoy your videos but this one confused me in the taekwondo club I am part of there are other belts that have a half color, not sure if that is the same as what you mentioned with the color marks. I have seen students also with the orange, purple and green belts. I am currently a yellow belt since I just started this year but I have my next belt ceremony in December for a half yellow half orange belt. What does that one mean? Also do you have a video on the do-san formation...i think that is what the new formation I need to learn is called.

      Interesting! This is the official ITF Taekwondo Belt Order. Maybe it was not ITF Taekwon-do that you trained but WT Taekwon-do? They might have a brown belt. In Karate, there is a brown belt. I was off for 2 months I came back in January of 2024 still with my white belt. Fast forward I skipped two belts I skipped yellow one and this past week I skipped green one. I now hold a green two belt. I almost gave up doing taekwondo due to my toe injury. My dojang has gone through numerous changes to belt systems in the past. In between blue and red, now there is brown stripe blue belt, brown belt, and then red. Also we have orange as well in between yellow and green, with green stripe and orange stripes.
    The reason why they changed the belt system is so they could round off the time it takes to get a black belt to 4 years.

      Well, 4 years is definitely not enough to "get" a black belt...and one has to earn it, not get it ;) This is the official ITF Taekwon-do system and order for belts, anything else is a different style.

    At the taekwondo that I go to, they have 16 belts. They added 4 new belts, which was the orange, purple, brown, and bodon, which came before black belt, and then they added advanced belts. so, in total, there are 16 belts in my taekwondo. And since I am generous, I will list all of them in order. (In replies)

      @NoraTKD  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment! However, it is not the official list of belts and belt order in traditional ITF Taekwon-do. There are only 5 color belts with stripes on them, so total of 10 levels / kups. Plus the black belt which can have the maximum 9 levels / dans. You must be doing some other style in the USA, there is no such thing of “adding new belts” in the traditional martial arts…and they might give out more belts in order to increase moral and retain people to stay there as reaching a certain level quickly. They might convince them to stay more at the club and pay more…especially for children, but that should not be the goal.

    • @NoraTKD

      ITF is the International Taekwon-Do Federation, founded on March 22, 1966 in Seoul (south) Korea, by General Choi Hong Hi, who developed Taekwon-Do, to promote the teaching of this martial art.
      I am not sure what ICTF is, when I googled it, it say the following: International Chang-Hon Taekwon-do Federation. The ICTF of Canada is a fund raising non-profit organization. Our organization supports Taekwon-do instructors and their students in a number of different ways.

    • @justindickson8927
      @justindickson8927 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ICTF is a branch of the ITF family. Very similar to General Choi’s ITF yet some small differences such as the colour of stripes on black belt uniforms. The current President was very close to General Choi.

    I'm a senior red belt (red with black line), going for brown belt next month. I guess each school is different. We are ITF. Our ranks and order are White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Red, Brown, Rec 1 Black (black w/ white line), Rec 2 Black (black w/blue line), Rec 3 Black (black w/ red line), then 1st degree Black. In order to test for another rank, you must first acquire your senior belt, which is. Color Belt with a black line.

    • @EmmanuelReyes

      Each school should not be different if they are ITF Certified or Authorized. If the school claim to teach ITF but alter the belt sequence it is not Certified. This doesn't mean they are not teaching you ITF or the ChanHon patterns but it just mean your instructor do not belong to any Federation and is doing his/her own thing.
