Big disappointment. Orlock was a very weak villain. There was no real sense of peril. The last act was pathetic. The Van Helsing character figured out a way to kill the vampire from a book. And then they try it and it works just like the book. Ok. No resistance, no complication, no twist, no surprise.
I'm personally a fan of gothic vampire films and I like Robert Eggers as a filmmaker so I'll probably like this adaptation of Nosferatu. It doesn't bother me whether they are fast-paced or slow-paced.
It was excellent. Most movies today are both obvious and spoon fed and totally lacking in any emotional depth. It's not only about what happens, but how it happens and the deeper meaning of things, which most of today's movies don't even attempt to address. It was the most I've enjoyed a movie in a long time. You may like it more as you age. You may not.

When I heard the not so talented Skarsgard brother starring it i went "this is gonna suck!" and I was right! That Guy was in Crap after Crap. With the lowest Point being the Crow.
I was SO excited for this one and was SO disappointed. The storyline was non-existent. No origin story of Ellen and Orlok. Ellen was just lonely, had a family and everything, but called out for a savior and that summoned Orlok? That's all of an origin story we get in over 2 hours? And Orlok dies because he just forgets what time of day it was? Ellen didn't trick him or manipulate him at all and he goes to her at his own will right at morning? And no fight with Christopher or anyone? The characters except Orlok and Ellen actually mattered at all to the storyline. So the story was all foretold in the book they found in the realtor's office which wasn't even at the end of the movie and we just needed to sit and wait for the fate foretold in the book to play out? Why? What's the point? Good just cancelled out evil with Ellen sacrificing herself? Okay. Great. Wonderful. I just walked away wondering what was the point of this? No message. No feelings. No storyline. But reviewers are just GUSHING over this saying it's the greatest EVER in this genre. What?! Glad you gave an honest review and you are not alone in your thoughts on this one. Bizarre. Great review though!
I 100% agree with everything you just said, I don't know the actual story of Nosferatu but you made it sound awesome. I would've loved to see all that stuff and actually watch a story about Nosferatu, this movie honestly felt very silly there was no emotion or good writing at all. For being the oldest legendary vampire they didn't perceive him well at all, they made him seem very pathetic and lame.
@@beingreelwitholyvia I didn't sense a great other worldly power in his scenes. He didn't try to kill Ellen's husband even? Why not if he is so evil and loves her? He's already threatened her, killed her friends, and literally has her possessed and not fully herself mentally so why wouldn't he just kill the husband? Have you watched Francis For Coppola's Dracula? If not, I'd donate some 💵 for you to watch it and see what a real story in film is. Believe me it's crazy and bizarre and odd but it's one hell of a story. And the movie reviewer snobs have already said "Nosferatu" isn't Dracula, they're two different stories. You just don't get the original from 1922. This is a perfect remake. So maybe they are right on that and I expected a Dracula movie and instead got this. But if this is a perfect remake of the original, I don't understand how the original is a masterpiece as well. OMG I have not had a film make me want to pull my hair out in frustration with how much missed potential there was. This could have been an epic movie with how it was shot and the beauty of the cinematography.
Because he lost track of time? Huh? The whole point of it was because she had to sacrifice herself because of his connection to her. The taste of her blood was intoxicating. Again another child with no understanding of the movie
@ if you liked the movie that’s fine, but in MY opinion it was bad and didn’t make any sense to me because the story telling was awful. If you Have nothing nice to say then don’t comment, my age has nothing to do with how i perceived this film. If Nosferatu was so “powerful”and “strong”I wanted to see more of Him using his powers on people, he came across as pathetic in this movie. If you liked it that’s fine we all have different opinions, but do not patronize me because of my age. There’s nothing to “understand” it’s just a movie about a fictitious creature.
@@Brandon-k2l8u your explanation doesn't make the movie any better. I'll work on being smarter so I can understand truly deep and meaningful films like this. Thank you for the guidance. I will become a better person because of it.
Watching this movie requires what's called an 'attention span.' If you possessed one, then you would've noticed that the film shows us the exact date when this story takes place, as well as the city and country. You would also know that the character's name is 'Count Orlok,' and not 'Nosferatu'- a German word which means 'undead.' Near the beginning of this review, you claimed that the film held your interest throughout the first half hour., but then later on you contradicted that statement and said you were bored after the first 5 minutes. If you are that easily bored, then it's a pretty good indicator that this film is beyond your current level of comprehension. A good film review involves more than just giving an opinion about whether you 'liked' it or not. There's lots of historical, cultural, religious, and political subtext and symbolism throughout this film, but you make no mention of them. Do you understand how Count Orlok and the bubonic plague serve as metaphors for the wave of antisemitism and anti- Eastern European sentiments that were pervasive in German society at the time the original 1922 version of 'Nosferatu' was released? When the first concentration camps were built, among the first prisoner sent to them were the Romani people. Can you draw any parallels between German society in the 1920-30's and the growing negative attitudes toward foreigners and undocumented workers in American society today? The average moviegoer watching "Nosferatu" may not catch these subtle inferences.. But a good reviewer will. "Nosferatu" doesn't aim to be a typical drive-in horror flick. It's goal isn't to be the scariest movie you've ever seen. The main 'evil' in the film isn't even Count Orlok- it's man's own ability to succumb to evil, by either ignoring it, permitting it, or joining it. The scientist in the movie explains how in order to fight evil, we must first confront the evil within ourselves. It's because evil can very easily become normalized in any society, including our own. So when it does show up, it's up to each of us to fight and resist it- or else it will take over our minds and bodies and eventually destroy us. A big thumbs up to your Dad for telling the theatergoer to turn off their phone.
@@trao1938 ya so I actually did catch some of those historical events like the symbolism of the rats connected to the black plague. That’s why I said in my review that this movie was very historically accurate to its timeline However this movie just wasn’t interesting to me because Orlok just wasn’t entertaining. You can still have a historically good movie that draws ties to everything but just a lame story If you haven’t seen the movie “The Witch” 2015 film by Robert Eggers you should watch it. It is also very historically accurate for its time and makes lots of connections with the people. But unlike Nosferatu it has an interesting and compelling story that doesn’t make people fall asleep. If you liked the movie that’s all that matters and I’m happy you did! But they could’ve done way better and done even more with the historical ties. I wanted to see Nosferatu more in this movie. And you said that the movie wasn’t really about count Orlok it was about man succumbing to it, then that’s fine but that isn’t entertaining to me. I have a pretty good attention span you can’t judge someone based on one review, it was just an opinion. This movie was very boring to me even with all those cool little historical details. The main characters weren’t likable and Count Orlok wasn’t cool enough to be any protagonist. If you liked it I’m happy for you! But at the end of the day it’s just a fictitious movie about a made up creature.
If you think this 2024 version has a subtext about events from 1922 rather than now....then I don't think you got it either (btw, the 1979 version returns to Dracula rather than 'Orlok' - it was only a (failed) copyright dodge in 1922). Perhaps you need to concentrate more.....;) Glad you enjoyed the film though. Just with until you see a genuinely good one!
@@andrewholliday251 Did your eyes miss the part of my post which asked,: "Can you draw any parallels between German society in the 1920-30's and the growing negative attitudes toward foreigners and undocumented workers in American society today?" Oh, and what is the name of the Count in the 2024 remake? Not Nosferatu... Not Dracula. ... It's Orlok. Just as there is no Van Helsing , or Mina Harker, or Renfield, either.
I agree with you 100 percent...I thought the characterization was very weak, the nudity was not necessary, the sexuality was super cringe and laughable at times, and certain character actions were head scratchers...the setting was well done ...Willam Dafoe was great until he laughed at the heroine's husband for wanting to save her...he also had a weird speech with the heroine calling her a girl boss..."You would have been a priestess of Isis..." The end I wanted to celebrate her sacrifice, but instead I felt revulsion towards her...the end scene was such a letdown
I couldn't agree more. Orlok just forgot what time of day it was? Ellen didn't trick or manipulate him. It just ended the way it was foretold in the book they found in the real estate office. Not profound or even sad in the end and it is the main character dying. That's not a good sign.

Haven't seen 2024 version yet, but sounds like the best Dracula adaptation remains the 1922 Nosferatu - should be seen in 135 minute restored version with Hans Erdmann's original score.

Awesome review, thanks! The signs were clear during a screening a year ago where a test audience said it was boring. So they threw the hype machine into full gear as per "LONGLEGS" (hype it to the max and don't reveal the baddie) only this movie cost a whopping $50m before prints and advertising and it has no appreciable stars. It cost $30m for the killer effects of CLOVERFIELD so that tells you what an VFX-laden movie this is despite their claims otherwise. Once the hype settled on Rotten Tomatoes I watched it drop from 100% to into the 80s w/ the User Reviews in the 70s in just 2 days. People nodded off bored, many said there was laughter at parts meant to be serious... it sounds like a mess. Hopefully 28 YEARS LATER this summer will bring the fear and a propulsive script, but I suspect zombies suffer the same as vampires from overfamiliarity. Glad you mentioned SINISTER - it was the real deal and cost a mere $3m.. not even 1/10th of NOSFERATU.
I enjoyed The Witch, respected/admired The Lighthouse - and was very disappointed (and bored) by Nosferatu. I see him as a pretty good director but by no means a great one.
Great and honest review! I think the problem with the movie isn’t the acting or direction but the story itself. It’s a weak narrative that might have worked in the 1820s or 1930s, but today’s audiences expect more sophisticated storytelling. As a society, we’ve matured and moved past the two-dimensional plots of this kind of film. Eggers should have modernized the story and, yes, made the creature scarier. I completely agree-there was nothing intimidating about Count Orlok, even though the movie tried hard to convince us otherwise. All that buildup with no real payoff ultimately made me leave the theater early.
I kept waiting for the movie to be great and the longer it went on, I knew there was less and less time for the film to do so. And it didn't. Very disappointing/non-existent storyline. Great comment.
"It’s a weak narrative that might have worked in the 1820s or 1930s, but today’s audiences expect more sophisticated storytelling." That's total BS. We've just had 16 years of Marvel movies dominating the box office - today's audiences are not, and do not expect, 'more sophisticated storytelling' than at any time in the past. The evidence suggests the reverse. Very few films with anything more than cyphers and two-dimensional characters (and equally obvious and labored storytelling) even get made now. Reality check: pick a film now that's targetted at teenagers (and ponder that almost all films are now aimed at teenagers; people (adults) queued around blocks to see Godfather II in 1974; that would never happen now; the great 'dumb-down' that happened post Star Wars is usually blamed*) - any youth targeted film - and consider that the 1969 equivalent was Easy Rider - which, whether you thinks its any good or complete trash - is far more mature in its approach than anything aimed at the same demographic today. *(Before 1977 films like Star Wars were made on the cheap for kid's school holidays - with the 'real films' made for adults. Post Star Wars that changed; now almost everything is made for kids - no matter how old they get!)

I'd have agreed with you...prior to seeing it.
Go and watch it namesake predecessors. This version felt like being spoonfed to me - obvious and banal takes with no ambiguity at all. Go and watch the Herzog version - particularly now that this remake gives the impression Herzog made action films (I never thought I'd say that!)

Have nothing nice to say then don’t comment, my age has nothing to do with how i perceived this film. If Nosferatu was so “powerful”and “strong”I wanted to see more of
Him using his powers on people, he came across as pathetic in this movie.
That’s why I said in my review that this movie was very historically accurate to its timeline
However this movie just wasn’t interesting to me because Orlok just wasn’t entertaining. You can still have a historically good movie that draws ties to everything but just a lame story
If you haven’t seen the movie “The Witch” 2015 film by Robert Eggers you should watch it.
Nosferatu is not a german word
@@richi1235 Romanian. Good catch.
If you think this 2024 version has a subtext about events from 1922 rather than now....then I don't think you got it either (btw, the 1979 version returns to Dracula rather than 'Orlok' - it was only a (failed) copyright dodge in 1922). Perhaps you need to concentrate more.....;)
Glad you enjoyed the film though. Just with until you see a genuinely good one!

"Can you draw any parallels between German society in the 1920-30's and the growing negative attitudes toward foreigners and undocumented workers in American society today?"
Oh, and what is the name of the Count in the 2024 remake?
Girl boss? Huh? He was talking about her supernatural abilities. You clearly didn’t understand anything about this movie 🤣🤣🤣

Haven't seen 2024 version yet, but sounds like the best Dracula adaptation remains the 1922 Nosferatu - should be seen in 135 minute restored version with Hans Erdmann's original score.
I think the Bernard score (BFI version) is pretty effective. It treats the film as a horror film (the score is pretty much Hammer standard); Erdmann score is great too but not so genre appropriate.

"It’s a weak narrative that might have worked in the 1820s or 1930s, but today’s audiences expect more sophisticated storytelling."
That's total BS.
