    Starting a fire with Duck tape doesn't have to be hard, you just need to know a few tips and the general principles that govern fire making with this tinder resource. Make sure and watch the whole video as I will be sharing those tips throughout. Thank you for watching! I enjoy reading your comments so be sure and leave them in the comment section below.

      Great demo…..”Duck” tape can be a real pain to start without the prep you demonstrated.
      I instruct ferro rod fire building in our SAR academy……and am always testing new methods using different strikers as well as tinder.
      One of the best strikers I have found is a piece of ceramic from an inexpensive knife blade.
      About a 1/4 to 3/8” piece imbedded in a short dowel works extremely well.
      You can also find small ceramic strikers on line.
      Give it a try…..I think you’ll be surprised how well it works.

      ps I found a great “tinder” you are NOT going to beeelieve…….and I don’t recall where I came across it…..but IT WORKS : plastic GUITAR PICKS !!!
      Yep……scrape the surface with a knife…..just enough to create a little “dust” and strike it with your ferro rod.
      I was amazed…..and laughing at the same time !
      They take up absolutely no room…..and really do work !!!

    James, you did this demonstration like a BOSS. I had difficulty with some of the super cheap duct tape available here in the Philippines. One"heavy-duty" brand did go for me with proper technique. It also had lots of fuzzy hairs as it was torn. I think having this tape in any kit is a great idea for its many uses. It works well in your car or truck emergency kit provided you have a dry match to ignite it. I place this fire extender in the expert column for use by only those who have practiced the ferrocerium technique you have demonstrated pre-need. Duct tape is a great fire extender only if you can get it to ignite and that will take practice with a ferro-rod. Unless you have an open flame (match, lighter etc.) this one should not be your go-to for those not willing to practice first. My two pesos worth.

    Man I appreciate the heck out of the history lesson. I am sure I am not alone in thinking that Duct Tape was it. I never knew of the Duck Tape and the time frame of both. I do like the set up with the Ferro Rod and Tape combo. Makes more sense now when I see people in videos with theirs set up like that. Thanks for the video.

    The carbide sharpener is a great multitool. The 'fire cord' can be replaced with waxed braided jute twine. I use it for zipper pulls, lanyards, pack straps, rifle slings, even a ring belt. I'm a walking pile of tinder. Another great vid.

    No ducks were harmed in the filming of this video!
    My son's tennis shoe had the rubber bottom separate almost completely off his shoe when we were 2 miles from our car in D.C . A policeman noticed and grabbed duck tape out of his car and wrapped up my son's shoe. My son was 10 and thought that was so cool! It lasted until we got home 3 days later and bought him new shoes. He wore it proudly because an officer was so kind to him.

    • @WayPointSurvival

      Yes, duck tape has many uses! The reason it was called duck tape is because it was originally an adhesive applied to a strip of duck cotton canvas.

    Hi James. New sub here. Gorilla brand is about the worst kind for adhesion, although the fabric is strong. I find the very cheapest largest rolls in the dollar store are so much more sticky. Name brand called "Tape All " 60 yds for $6 Canadian..probably $3 USD as it's an American brand. If I were to use Gorilla for strength, I'd cover it with the Tape All to keep it from coming undone. Gotta try some to know it.

    Alot of duck tape and a lot of scraping of the ferro rod. I still prefer fatwood and birch bark natural fire combo. Things that are fairly easy to gather in the woods.

    • @WayPointSurvival
      @WayPointSurvival  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be great, but birch bark doesn't grow at my latitude unless it is artificially planted by someone as an ornamental tree.

    • @samthai818
      @samthai818 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's too bad. Birch bark is awesome. Every time I travel, I like to stop by a cracker Barrel restaurant they always plant ornamental birch trees with the bark literally 10 layers thick just naturally peeling off. I always stock up on a grocery bag full from just one tree while doing no harm to it. Fortunately you still have fatwood, I hope. I can usually get a fire started from just a single strike of my ferrocerium rod. Cedar bark shavings is another great fire starter. Also with the Chinese virus, people always carry alcohol sanitizers that lights a fire with a single strike. Lots of good methods, we just need to improvise and use a little imagination. But your duct tape method is great because it burns for a very long time once started.

      It's called chatter and it happens possibly because of differences in the hardness of the various metals used in the construction of the ferrocerium rod. It happens with other strikers as well not just the striker that I prefer.

    Your duck tape may be different but tapes used to stabilize actual heating and cooling duct work should be fire resistant according to building codes. If something is fire resistant good luck with most Ferro rods. 😆now back when I was a kid in NC we made torches from Duck brand duct tape and a big stick, lit em with a Bic. After learning about the fire resistant qualities of some of these tapes I'm sure glad I went with Gorilla tape I will have to read the labels to see if Gorilla tape is indicated for use in duct work...
