  • Everything has been shot to death - why bother going to shoot iconic locations? RUBBISH! - Iconic locations are usually beautiful, magnificent, awe-inspiring and unfortunately crowded. In this video I show how I managed to make some shots that I really love despite the crowds.

Indeed, a long lens has become much more important to my photography, for just this reason. I went on a workshop to Yosemite last year that really opened my eyes to this. Thanks for the reinforcement of this guideline.

Very nice Alister. I was out there the same time as you but as you were with a group I didn't want to go over and say hello.

I hope so too! yeah, I'd run this trip again. the scenery is stunning and it is totally possible to zone out the tourists.

Good idea. Unfortunately mass tourism has become a plague in Iceland, esp. on the south coast with all its tourist traps. There are so many, many other magnificent waterfalls to see in Iceland than just Skógarfoss and Seljalandsfoss. Actually strange how tourism seems to work, it is as if being a "tourist" involves an obligation to taking pictures of very specific, pre-determined objects.

Dear Sir, thank you for these videos which I find instructive. I find many of your photos very well taken and far more creative than most photos one sees nowadays; I think the second photo in the library in the video (at 3:30) is excellent. Looking forward to more content.
    Yours,

I always say, when everyone is looking right, look left. The iconic places are iconic for a reason, but they have been way over photographed. Might as well just buy the postcard. There is nothing wrong with photographing the iconic scene, you will get lots of likes on social media and it can keep the memory of the place fresh in your mind. The question is how do you do something different, something original that is your own? That is what makes a photograph special

Thanks Alister. Vg advice for obtaining expressive images and more importantly to keep happy and avoid frustration. I guess there weren’t so many people around photographing those mountainous waves!😊

Love your images! For me the longer lenses are almost always the ones that make me 'see' what matters to me. A wise guy once said: point your lens at the cool and leave out what isn't 😉.
