  • This video illustrates what happens when a shotgun shell accidentally goes off outside a gun. It is surprisingly innocuous.
    This was done under very controlled conditions - do not reproduce this yourself.

    We will be demonstrating the Fith Ops trip alarm more in another video but check out this site. They have a lot of cool specialty shotgun ammo too! It was nice of them to send us this to test out!

    I had a house fire, and had several thousand rounds of various caliber explode in the fire. I told the firemen before they went in the house, but they weren't concerned at all. Unconstrained shells exploding like this just dont concentrate the energy in one direction just as this video shows, and against their fire protection, there was no increased danger from the shells. I had never thought about it before - Good to see this video to see it firsthand and slowed down!

      Its as loud as it would be in a shotgun.
      I did a test once of firing a de-powdered,de-pelleted, primered shell in a shotgun. I was shocked at how loud it was! A flame even protruded from the end of the barrel.

    Interesting I’ve never seen a video of this done before. However for the case of a misfire randomly going off on the ground it would do even less damage, the shell in this test is being held firm, if there’s nothing holding it then the casing would go flying back, this dissipating the energy even more. Better to be safe though, if you get a misfire dispose of it safely

    It is not just the length of the shotgun barrel that causes higher velocity for the shot column. The restriction caused by both the shotshell crimp and the shot wad obturating the barrel creates the pressure required to complete the burn sequence, allowing the powder to create pressures many magnitudes greater than that displayed in the video.

    Primers can create 40-60 Bar pressure inside the loaded shell. Smokeless powder requires substantially high pressure level to burn fast, but if there's nothing to keep the pressure (just soft thin plastic shell walls) then it wouldn't burn... Shot gun shells are perfect for booby traps. Pot growers put trip wires, in their fields, that will trigger spring traps that use simple impact to trigger the shot gun shell. They use this method all over the world.

    I am remarkably surprised how the majority of the shot went forward rather than spraying in every direction.
    That has always been my fear with an ejected hang-fire (not that I’m not going to still treat every hang-fire as if it might do just that).

  • @frekitheravenous516
    @frekitheravenous516 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If you mount that in reverse (shell faces the tripline) about 6-8 inches off the ground it makes a great early warning system and cripples the intruder. But you have to use 00-Buck or Flachete Rounds. Nothing fancy, cheap and works well. And if you can retrieve the mechanism you can use it again.
    Keep in mind I am speaking about SHTF scenarios here. This is not for regular home defense when you are leaving to go get dominos or some s**t.

    • @boomstick4054
      @boomstick4054 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Remember the old Daisy BB rifle. The end of the barrel twisted and you poured in the BB's. It was about the size of a shotgun shell. We would tape on a 12 ga. shell to the end of the barrel, with one hand hold the rifle above our head and fire it. Not much happened, like here the shell just blew out the side.

    I think that the placement of the shotgun shell in the video increased the damage to the head. Setting the shell a couple inches back on the flat surface seems like it would change the shape of the discharge and cause more damage than a shell only supported on end.

    Loved the video. Question: You said a couple times that this perimeter tripwire device "doesn't work", and yet it seemed to work fine. Pull wire, it goes "bang!", right? Does the maker advertise it as a device for inflicting death or injury on an intruder? That would certainly leave them open to a fat lawsuit. Maybe it's just supposed to make a loud noise.

    I've done this experiment as a kid about 50 years ago. I was about 8. I learned then that powder needs some compression to burn. Don't get that when a shell is not in a chamber. Surprising how loud a primer and a wad are alone. Fun for training dogs.

    • @allensanders4204
      @allensanders4204 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did it as kid with a old cardboard 12 gauge shell that had a bulge , cut the crimp , poured out the shot , stuck it in a vise on the work bench and hit the primer with a nail and hammer. The roar was deafening in a 2 car attached garage. Pissed my mom off beyond bad, which in turn led to my dad becoming agitated which happens when wives get mad. Which led to a ass whipping for me, fun experiment for a 8 yr old but with negative reinforcement. BTW I did get some powder burns on my knees and shins because I had the shell in the vise primer up , wad facing down . It was a old magnum duck load of 4s before I took the shot out. Fun Stuff back in the fun days of the early 60s before Karen's and everybody were tight assed
