Seine Stimme zu hören, weckt Erinnerungen an den Frühstückstisch, den Gustl Weishappel mit dem legendären "Musikjournal"Jahrzehntelang begleitete.
it was 1966 and i was 8..... mum and dad looked after one of the main tourist 2 storey shops just 30 metres from the roloi .....its still there.....the shop was downstairs and upstairs is where i used to do my school work and at the same time watch from the upstairs window all the fishermen come in with their boats and catch from the night before... memories...!!!! i spent 2 years in this gorgeous island just about the same time this video was made....and 1st learnt to swim in the spilia which is just around from the harbour......the islands mascot at the time, whose name was yianni who i think is shown here at 36:36 pushing a cart, taught me how to fish. there was a trireme (greek ancient ship) docked literally opposite of where the roloi coffee shop is, that belonged to some friends and the school was up the hill.......my memories bring me often to this place as one of the most beautiful times of my life....
I visited Hydra Sept 2017. Swarming with tourists but the magic of the place is still undeniable. My lady and I became much more devoted during this time.

Australians particularly have an affinity for this island because it is where George Johnston and Charmian Clift lived in the late 60s -later joined by Leonard Cohen and Marianne, and even Sydney Nolan. I visited there myself and found the house they lived in, along with the famous Douskos' Tavern. Must go back.
wonderful video. My dad plans to do something from Hydra. In fact; in his heart Hydra is the only destination. At the end he found his taverna Lulu`s! He`s going to ask Erini why they don`t have music anymore!
I have been reading about this island for decades, and have started again in the past couple of months. For someone like me, whose lens is via the stories about George Johnston and Charmian Clift and Leonard Cohen, this video offers a valuable perspective. By 1966 George and Charmian had left the island. Leonard still spent time there, but the expat enclave had grown considerably by then, compared to when George and Charmian arrived in 1955. Yet I did not sight anyone who I might have thought as being from the expat community. There was one woman who had a modern look about her, but she might have been Greek. I wonder how long these kinds of activities persisted until modernity took over?

Το βίντεο μου το έδωσε πριν χρόνια κάποιος Υδραίος σε DVD και το ανέβασa στο TH-cam, δεν θυμάμαι το όνομά του, ναυτικός μάλλον ήταν. Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ για τις πληροφορίες. Δεν έχω το φιλμ για την Κέρκυρα.

I first came to Hydra in 1965, so for me this film is very nostalgic, (especially the agora being on the front)
