Your attitude and perception has served you well. An opportunity is an opportunity, if you perceived it to be an opportunity. You looked at shining shoes as an opportunity, when like you said, people made fun of you for shining shoes. Your attitude helped you progress further. If you thought and acted like shining shoes sucked, you wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to be a dishwasher, and the cycle continued.
Since you want to become a better speaker, I'd suggest Dale Carnegie. I'm sure you've heard of it. Toastmasters have helped people too.

When I got my 1st job at a petrochemical plant my goal was to be no less than equal to the best operator the supervisors and engineers use to rate. Hard work, asking questions, reading as much as I could to learn etc .. Made supervisor @ 28 yrs the youngest sup @ the (big) plant. Fair, respectfull and the most I liked my boss said, nobody had my skills and knowledge and how cool I was during emergencies. Four yrs later assigned to a new facility start up in another country. Back home another promotion. Not a millionare but a good house, cars, some properties and now enjoying retirement. Never had problems just challenges.

@@TomPaceMentor Nope, becoming reach was never my goal. Having a good salary to cover expenses, enjoy life, keep some savings was and is enough for me. Actually my pension is higher than my last job salary. Know a few persons that only live to save money. They die and the family starts a war for the bounty. Enjoy your millions🤑🤑🤑🤑, in the meantime I will enjoy my retirement.
