1: No, it doesn't hurt the horse if it's shod correctly by a qualified registered person.
2: The horse is calm because it has been trained from birth to know there is nothing to fear.
3: The majority of horses these days are worked either under saddle or in harness and on hard man made surfaces, shoes protect the feet from wearing down too much and can add grip via studs in the shoes for competition animals.
4: Feral horses have particularly hard feet and manage them naturally by foraging, if they get sick they recover or die, it’s nature.
5: The average horse needs re-shoeing every 6-8 weeks

Excellent! I thoroughly enjoyed the video. My wife was an equestrian when she was younger (and a farm girl), and she has explained horseshoeing to me. I've never seen it done, so this was a real treat!

That as really interesting I have never seen a horse/pony having new shoes fitted. Lots involved and you explained it really well. Must be murder on your back.
I'm just about to start my apprenticeship and it's definitely an art form this carrier. You look at the guys and girls who have been doing this for many many years and they make it look effortless like your self. Even though it may not be effortless, but it's all technique isn't it. But something as "simple" as using the buffer to cut the clenches to take the shoe off, will take me about 2-4 minutes per shoe. That's just cutting the clenches. Given I only have 5 days experience hahah. But it really shoes me the level of skill and precision required in this. I can't wait to really get started in my training, especially has we make all our own shoes and tools, that's exciting, to get into the forge and learn everything there too.

I was wondering about the old nail holes, my guess is they grow out with the hoof over time but wouldn't they weaken the hoof or get dirt and pebbles stuck in them?

Yes, absolutely right. They do grow out but can also cause problems if they don't grow out quick enough..
do you fill in the holes that were there from the old set of shoes or do they eventually grow out? i've never watched my horse get his shoes done so i wouldn't know. i might sound dumb sorry haha.

talking about metal chips flying of I had one fly up my nose and it bled all day long liked to never got it to stop. made a believer out of me to make sour to get the burse or mushroom ends ground off and dressed up be for using . besides they hurt when than hit you.
Gary if it hasn't been taken care of already have you considered seeing a chiropractor for your left arm? sounds like it might help you.

Im a begginer smith, and i really apritiate these kind of videos, ofcouse im not gong to attempt this after just waching it once but its still pretty imforming, (in fact i dont think im ever gonna try shoeing a horse its just too risky for me ,one wrong move culd injure the animal) but it is still interesting to look. What I know about horses you could write on the back of a stamp. It looks pretty complicated. How long does it take to learn the trade?
There are guys that have been shoeing for years and still haven't mastered it its all on who you are if its you're niche than its a bit easier to pick up

Yes, six weeks is average but can be as little as five or as long as nine!

I wanted to become a farrier but I had a lot of back issues so I went to the doc and got told I had scoliosis...No becoming a farrier for me, unfotunately. :(

After watching one of your other videos on shoeing you seem to be averaging about 7 and 1/2 mins for each foot, that's pretty quick considering you are videoing it and you are still suffering with your wrist.
You seem to know what you are looking for when you re-shoe, do you still come across things you have not seen before?
Occasionally, but after about 37 years I've seen most things!

+Joshua Alvarado I guess you are talking about hot shoeing, it's just a different method of doing the same job. You can hot shoe without having a workshop, you can just work out of the van.
Say you got a new horse your going to shoe it will it be this calm?
Well that depends on many things. Is it young, has it been done before, if not has it been well handled and trained.

I surprised you dont seal the nail holes, I dont do it for a living but we shoe our horses the seal the nail holes keep the muck out, had our Appaloosa get a bad infection in the nail from something getting in there so ever since we seal them lol we call it their nail polish

Dang, yes owner call, but I would have reset those shoes (didn't have much wear) I like that highly portable anvil, did you make it? From time to time I have people asking me to shoe their horse, but I don't want to pack my large anvil, so I'm looking for a more portable one.
Hi, I'm not sure if he made his or purchased it, but we had a couple of these at horse shoeing school for people to try out. You can purchase them online and they are normally between $125-300 USD from what I saw when I was shopping. They are called Stall Jacks. I have seen some people who had homemade ones as well though.

+garyhuston It was very common to shoe your own animals in the pioneer era here in western Canada. My Grandfather did his into the 1930s.

Both, I was brought up making all my own but now use mainly machine mades..
