    *When you have a situation with an unusually high level of employee turnaround, then this is usually indicative of poor management as opposed to repeated new employee failure. Just because someone is a great pilot, does not necessarily imply they are good managers of people. Having a short fuse isn't a measure of greatness, it's a measure of great stress.*

    • @rickbanet4830
      @rickbanet4830 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Absolutely. The ability to fly an aircraft does not qualify you to manage anything or anyone. It is a completely different skill set.

    • @ketilneergard1468
      @ketilneergard1468 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      A simple question from Norway. How long do you think your management skills would have kept Buffalo in operations? Joe has his unique piloting skills, but it’s his managing skills that keep this company in business. I have no doubts

    • @markjob6354
      @markjob6354 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@ketilneergard1468 Part of Joe's success lies in the simple fact he was the ONLY major air carier in the far North for many years. Joe's company provided a service none of the other regional air cariers in North America were willing to provide, since doing so was considered to be far too unprofitable in this particular market. In other words, Joe found a unique "Niche" market.

    • @ketilneergard1468
      @ketilneergard1468 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@markjob6354 Finding this “Niche” is absolutely a management skill. It’s definitely not luck alone. To fly these airplanes can most skilled pilots do in normal conditions. But keep them operational is admirable! Time is running out.

    If you are going to ask a lot of people, and want people to be enthusiastic and committed, the most stupid thing you can do is on day one, tell people they are not valued, that your employer expects you to fail, and that your first resort at this company is literally to reach for a piece of 2"x 4" to beat new employees with, rather than a carrot to try to fix a problem. In this situation, high employee turnover is not just an inevitable situation - it is a self inflicted injury. It is a direct result of a lazy, uncaring, brutal and stupid attitude towards employees. When you have bright people who are motivated enough to spend many tens of thousands of dollars of their own money to get themselves through flight school, then travel from often big cities with moderate climates, to live in a large country town that is an inhospitable icebox for about half the year, just to get the opportunity to fly specific aircraft - you already have someone with a lot of get up and go. A new self motivated employee, that if handled intelligently, will willingly move mountains for you. Why is it a mystery, that when you treat intelligent people with high self motivation, plus a skill set that is in demand by other employers, badly, they will get up and leave? If you want people to stick around and do their work with enthusiasm, you set people up to succeed rather than to fail, and treat people with consideration care, and kindness. It always staggers me when people who have enormous levels of qualifications and certifications in a field, turn around and act in ways that show absolutely zero levels of empathy and common sense, towards people they actually need to rely on to perform the roles that they do. Then complain when people stop putting up with it, the moment they get a better offer. Which was a bar that you actually set pretty low, by the way you behave towards them!

      Daniel, i have the impression that a lot in this series just is scripted.
      There is no way a company can survive this way.
      The incredable unprofesional behaviour of the personel, lack of descent training, a general manager who interfere's with flight operation (even while still in the air)...
      No way.... a company like that would have been shut down long ago, even in de remote outskirts of Canada.
      Still i like to see those old aircraft.... but be resonable you can't run a commercial operation with those anymore.

Ancient behaviour that leads to First Officers flying under pressure and in fear of making mistakes, they might not have it in them to say something to Joe when he innevitably makes a mistake.

I had no trouble getting enough other employees to come with me. It was so much better and a better atmosphere too. The company couldn’t tell us anything about ‘our’ house. They tried to funnel new guys to us without even asking, we firmly told them not to do that.

Plus the fact that he didn't just say to get lost soon as he gave notice. It is cool to see though for sure, because I remember the episode when Joe got on him about flying right in the beginning and now he's going to fly 747's! That is cool! Why would a young pilot want to go to work for Buffalo and work one to two years hustling baggage and cargo in the hopes of someday getting the "privilege" of starting to train as a copilot when they can go to work for a major airline and start in the right seat. It makes no sense. And, Buffalo is shooting themselves in the foot by doing it. These are inexperienced pilots coming right out of school and, after a year or two out of the cockpit, they have lost everything they learned.

    In 1977-78 I had the opportunity to buy 18 ex-New Zealand National Airways Corporation DC-3s with full certs.
    Plus a whole heap of spares.
    The total amount asked by the New Zealand Government was $30,000-NZD
    I was only 21 years old working as a Senior Aircraftsmen for Airwork (NZ) Ltd, and could not raise the full finance, for personal reasons.
    Biggest regret of my entire life.
    We had to remove the passenger seating and fit 44 gallon drum fuel tanks for the flight across to Zimbabwe where the went into service there.
    And I would work for Buffalo all day, all night, anytime of the year, for nothing.
    Just to have an occasional fly in one.
    So did someone do something that someday they will regret ?
    I could have been part of an Airline in New Zealand flying freight up and down the country far cheaper than any truck or train was doing it for, an Airline just like Buffalo Airways is.
    What I regret is instead of paying the deposit and raising the rest needed, I decided to get married instead.
    And lost what I did have, including what I should have had, when she took everything then divorced me 4 years later.
    So we all do things we really should not, if we stopped to think clearly about it.
    Joe deserves all the respect simply because he has fought all his life for the Aircraft, the staff, and the name of the Buffalo Airways Airline.
    I don't know of any other Airline that flys the best aircraft ever built, do you ?

      Best comment here. Thanks for making the effort. Trust another Stephen P from NZ to make it. I'm in Dunedin. 14 years younger than you. I know airwork was in Wanganui but had Fletchers based in other places too. That was 35 odd years ago when I was at hamilton Airport at aeromotive, next to Robertsons. total respect for you ag guys.

      @@stephenpenniket9976 Hi Stephen, yes the Fletchers were the mainstay of the Ag use in NZ until the front hopper 375 Braves came out later on.
      ( better chance of surviving a prang with the weight in front of you )
      I was at the Christchurch Airport Branch of Airwork, where most of the airframe and overhauls were carried out.
      When the DC3's were taken out of service by NAC they re-branded and modernised their fleet. They parked the DC3's on the tarmac near our hangar until they found a buyer, and I spent many hours around them.
      When I was a kid I use to cycle out to Ferrymead Museum and sit for hours and hours in the cockpit of the old DC3 they had parked there, and my interest in aircraft started then.
      Now I am retired, and my flying interests involve the freedom of soaring like a bird ( for real ) flying one of my paragliders.
      And in the history of Aviation, the people, the planes, and the videos that other dedicated followers of flight make for all to see.
      There are a number of Hangars in New Zealand that have preserved the history of flying and Omaka at Blenheim is one of the best in the world.
      I even bought a RNZAF Transport Coach from their Blenheim Base, and turned it into a Motor-Home.
      The Woodburne Cafe across the road from Blenheim Airport have a complete Argosy parked in their carpark, the Cafe Owner bought it for the aluminum scrap value and they towed it across the road for him.
      You can go inside it and look around, and when you are passing it would be worth a visit.
      I understand it is the Argosy that the crew on the Wgtn-ChCh night flight saw the UFO's off Kaikoura from.

It's imperative that the ground crew and the people that operate the office try to make the home environment is appealing as possible. The largest cost any business is resource management. It's common for owners and managers to be concerned about maintenance, passengers, and regulations. The fact is if you don't do everything possible to stop human resource attrition you're destined to either go broke or never get ahead. I speak as a professional and corporate pilot for 40 years. That is how it ends if Buffalo doesn't take være of its employees... And Buffalo has a good team under the roof, but are losing out since they can't keep people working long enough to climb... I think that will eventually be the end of Buffalo as a company as the years pass...

    Many of apparently don't watch much to be judging how jo does things. Ya he's a ole school raw dog . But when you have high stakes on your hands on what it cost to run the airlines any "oops" that happens costs big bucks esp for a self made small outfit. You got to have some good respect for straight to the point raw dogs strick military style bosses ... That's how a true leader and boss works... They didn't get there by pandering to soft pampering their employees. I rather have a boss that don't do talk behind your back leaving you in the dark whether you did something wrong etc. He's straight forward to the point take it like an adult or go cry on someone's else's doorstep type of boss.

I personally hate the liberal government but it's the one benefit of having them in power is that abuse like this would never be tolerated now.
