      Star Trek, Star Wars, Predator, Alien... There isn't a popular sci-fi franchise that isn't suffering from this effect of the latest installments being so much worse then what came before.

      People try to inject "new ideas" into a franchise, which normally irritates anyone who has a working brain due to it either just badly copying its predecessors (Dark Fate), being confusing to avoid criticism of a lack of explanation (Genesys) or being so different in theme it can't be fully considered part of the same franchise (Salvation). T3 is mostly the same, but adds enough for it so be at least somewhat memorable - the expanded list of Resistance members, the inevitability of JD, and Kate.

    • @TimeBomb014X
      @TimeBomb014X 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I like to call this the Disney Star Wars effect, a phenomena where a studio will release a new entry into a classic and well beloved franchise and bastardise the source material to such a degree it forces fans to look back at previous unfavorable entries and appreciate them more. Everyone hated the prequel Trilogy but 2 SW rapes later fans love the prequels almost as much as the original trilogy. Genisys and Dark Fate are so bad that Rise of The Machines now feel like the true sequel to T2 Judgement Day

      @@harryunderwood9387 Well, at least Salvation somewhat tried to evolve the franchise by going to the future instead of retreading the whole "Protecting the future leader of the resistance and time travel" shenanigans.

      I guess it has something to do with the rise of the internet and social media. It democratizies things which isn't always a good thing. Basicly Hollywood can see first hand that a majority of the audience is content with low effort writing and narrative quality and the critics are easily pleased with inclusion of "progressive values/messages".

    Just a small note: John doesn't have a drug problem in T3, he was in a motorcycle accident at the beginning of the film, but because he was living off the grid and didn't want any attention he broke into the vet's office to steal pain killers instead of going to the hospital where he could be tracked. Ever since the events of T2, he was cautious of whether or not he and his mom really did stop Judgement Day, he went off the grid specifically so SkyNet could not track him in the event SkyNet would come into existence, that's why the Terminator was sent to protect Kate Bruster, her location was known, but not John's location.

    • @AsusanXT
      @AsusanXT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      After all, his true objective was to take them to the safe house when they found him. There was someone else whom had an issue of why this Terminator didn't know John, was because Future Kate was the one whom rewrote this one and was in command of this T-800. Which is legit to me at least. After all, we did see the other one burn in the factory.

    • @michaellesak6912
      @michaellesak6912 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      the t-850 was sent back to get both john and kate to safety, he tracked her down because her locations were in the records but not because that was his only objective. he followed kate's commands because kate was the one who reprogrammed him and sent him back, this model was developed and deployed to take advantage of john's emotional attachment to the t-800. although not explicitly stated in the film, it is made clear that the t-850 succeeded in his primary mission before being captured and reprogrammed. hence why kate programmed it and not john, john was already dead. it is also implied that kate programmed it not to answer certain questions from john to protect him from the knowledge that his protector was/is/will be his executioner.

    While Patrick had menace, especially given that he impersonated a cop, someone that is supposed to protect us, Kristanna had a creepy factor a la uncanny valley. Her dead eyed stare and slight smirk in pretty much all scenarios works, in my opinion. It's similar but slightly different to the T-1000. It assumes the shape of someone unassuming and seems to have a slightly sadistic side, juxtaposed to Arnold's matter-of-fact deadpan delivery.

      The T-X is basically all the multiple roles it's previous terminators fullfilled (being closer to Cameron's vision of what an infiltrator would be) plus a more effective way of controlling the polymemetic alloy (in the original timeline skynet had to discontinue the t-1000 production because he had no way to control it's AI from learning at a faster rate) plus it has blueprints of other Terminators and since it had a better connection to the internet (in the script to T3 it linked with Skynet via phone) it provided it with information on how to create the t-800 earlier and info about John and his resistance. So yeah plothole for Salvation solved.

      I agree as well. It isn't a great film, but it is solid and doesn't destroy what came before it. Plus, I prefer the idea that you can't change the past. You can only tinker at the edges. So, Skynet and Humanity are really playing a game where the result is ordained even if the methods and causes change some.
      One problem I had with two, and it was continued in three and Genisys, is the use of Terminators in flashbacks as ubiquitous soldiers. The original movie had all sorts of other types of HK's and Terminators were simply infiltration units. I always had the feeling they were meant to be extremely expensive to make and not something you build thousands of.

      Yet this movie negates John's importance, and he could easily be replaced by a military boyfriend who witnessed the scenes at the base, and has had refresher courses in how to handle himself on a daily basis, weapons training, tactics, etc. Since John seems not only lacking in practice for quite a few years, but utterly forgetful of virtually everything he learned under his mothers tutelage.
      It also corrupts and reverses the message. Going from you can change the future, "the future is what you make it," to, "the future is set." This message further negates the importance of John, as it implies he cannot stop his inevitable death, and as such, his very existence is assuring the cycle completes its full circle, giving all the more reason to tossing him out in favour of a joker's wild card of someone else with active tactical and weapons training, alongside other skills like hacking (or just coding)...which again would have been plentiful from the officer classes on the base her father worked on, and it wouldn't take rocket science to figure out what his new mission would be after they escape the bunker, let alone find motivation to hide in a bunker as there is no way to stop the launch.

    • @kenjett2434

      Alexander Langella well its true what you said but its all a what if. The real story isnt about whether John poseses any skills at all. It all boiled down to chance and the fate of John being in the rigjt place at the right time. The whole story is totally about getting John into that specific bunker. Why is that not because he had skill it was because of what that particular bunker was. This bunker was suppose to be where the President and top leaders of the millitary were to lead in case of what was happening. John being the one there to answer the calls is what put him in charge of everything. So it was guided from the very beginning for him to be in that specific place to take leadership not because he had skills. It was a destiny or fate to be in the right place at the right time.

      I always loved T3 and didn't understand why so many thought it was bad. I'll admit, it did suffer from "been there, done that," and sitting in theaters, I was much more impressed with T2 in 1991 than I was with T3 years later. But I still thought it was very good and there is one important aspect that I think it actually does better. I find the characters in T3 very likable. In T2, I was naturally compelled to cheer on the humans trying to hold off the apocalypse, but honestly, Sarah was kind of crazy, and John was a smart ass punk. I didn't dislike them, per se, but I didn't find them endearing either.

    My only real problem with this movie is that it completely changed the theme from the previous movie. T2's theme was "There is no fate but the one you make", but T3 turns around and says, "Nope! You have no choice in the matter." Once I was able to accept that change T3 became a much more enjoyable experience for me. I actually like the idea of Skynet being the virus that ultimately became the reason Skynet was turned on. Plus, this movie gets a huge boost in entertainment when you watch it with the RiffTrax commentary!

    • @ignasia7230
      @ignasia7230 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      More than just that. It also negates the entire value and point of John Conner. Think about it. Given fate is absolute, he's unable to control the terminator, and we know he'll eventually lead to his inevitable death, that his wife is actually the TRUE savior of mankind, and that John merely serves as her trainer, something that any military man from that base who witnessed the events and escaped with her could have trained her in...and quite a bit better I might add given John is clearly out of practice for years, has forgotten much of what he was trained in, and is kind of a louse compared to the more self-determined version of himself we left off with at the end of T2.
      His very existence, and that the war is clearly ongoing and inevitable means the only way to assure anything can change is to throw a veritable monkey wrench into the mix and remove him and replace him with a different guy who has similar training but a different mindset going in. Granted that could mean the death of humanity, but being a gamble, it could mean skynet actually dies.
      It also makes zero sense that John was picked up before his wife when it's his wife who is the target, and the T-850 should have no idea what model he's up against. The T-X's abilities are also too perfect to fill in obvious gaps in the continuity, and while cool and make for some great story as a standalone film, it's just in poor taste as it means skynet is its own savior and builder, not really humans who invoke and create it themselves...though with its own technology.
      Nevermind there wasn't an inkling of solid explanation for why skynet still exists. Plenty of options they could have gone with, even for the time. Recovered data from Dyson's shot up hdd which is possible in the 90's at the consumer level. Or the owner of the company, being under military contract had data files copied and stored elsewhere that Dyson wasn't aware of, offsite, likely linked to the military, which would have served as the best explanation for continuity purposes.

      John Conner being the savior of humanity was always the weakest and silliest plot point of the Terminator movies. I actually preferred the time travel concept in T3 over T1 and T2 because it makes more sense to me that the timeline changes each time you send a Terminator back. I thought the opening line of T2 was not truthful. "Skynet sent 2 Terminators back." Well, why stop at 2? Why not send an entire army to kill Sarah Connor in 1984? Why not send the T-1000 to 1984 if they had the technology already? Reese would not be able to beat the T-1000 for sure but might beat the T-800.
      It makes more sense that Skynet only sent one Terminator back in the original timeline to 1984 and Reese being sent back changed John's father to Reese.
      Then the events of T1 changed the timeline and when Skynet was about to lose again, they have a newer model in the T-1000 so they try again in T2.
      The T-1000 fails and it changes the timeline resulting in the events of T3 with the TX being sent back in time.

    The main problem that I have with this movie is that it completely changed the narrative. Both T1 and T2 were based on the idea that the future isn't set in stone and humanity holds its fate in its hands in every single moment. This was a strong motivator for the human characters and made the viewer want to root for them, becasue it seemed their success is being decided in every single scene they are in. In T3 this idea was totally abandoned, and because of that the human characters had no agency, they were like people riding on a rollercoaster through the story, because it was all predefined and set in stone. "Judgement Day is inevitable", as the T-850 clearly stated to John. This completely removed John's agency as a hero and turned him into a helpless victim of his surroundings and of history that has been already written.

    • @korsekil
      @korsekil ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. T3's message was "shit happens, we just deal with it". Which means that any stakes in future movies are gone. No matter what they do in the present, Skynet will happen, John Connor will die, and the Terminator will be sent back to try and kill him. But even if they do, it doesn't matter, as further established in Dark Fate when a new savior arises. All of it is just destiny and there's no point in trying.

They stopped the skynet future in t2 so it makes sense that he isn’t important anymore and a new future was set in motion. It’s like nukes. The world was guaranteed to have nukes developed, if it hadn’t been us it would have been someone like the Germans. Miguel GC Gamer dark fate has the same plot though but in a more realistic way if you think about. I’ve been using the nuclear bomb analogy.
      In t3 it comes down to no matter what is done some how skynet gets developed. Makes no sense. It’s like saying no matter what happened the iPhone would have been developed even if you got rid of its creators. That’s nonsense.
      Dark fate t2 successfully stopped skynet. But the same road was taken in terms of technology which just created a new future with a completely diff ai intelligence which technically is more realistic.
      Back to the nuke analogy I mentioned. We weren’t the only ones trying to develop nukes. If the American team who created the first wasn’t successful for whatever reason someone else would have been but it wouldn’t be the same nuke design as our team because it would have been developed by someone else. Which of you think about it makes the d day caused by legion and a new resistance leader more realistic

      The inclusions of the nuke powercells is just bad as it only really serves to be a maguffin to allow him to win at the end [which also required that he be hacked in the first place to corrupt his programming as otherwise he couldn't have self-terminated,] but also really messes with both T-1 and T-2 as if the powersource had been used in that model skynet would have won both times [would have nuked when crushed in the press, or when the T-1000 pierced it in the foundry.]

    To me, the best part was how machines and humans behaved how they were supposed to. Arnold's character mantained an emotionless and serious face throughout the entirety of the movie and he realized the true danger of Skynet. While on T2, the robot still shows some human traits, in this one both Arnold and the woman don't even show signs of pain. To me, the fight on the bathroom was one of the best I'd ever seen.
    And the ending of Terminator 3 was flawless. Though I'd want to see a proper sequel to it. What happens 30 years from then? Will there be any survivors? Will the machines be hunting them like T2 predicted it? Or both machines and humans were practically wiped out and Brewster and Connor are the only survivors plus their children? What do they do for entretainment in the bunker (besides sex)? How long did their rations last?
    Honestly, amazing ending but still leaves a lot of questions that could be explored in a proper sequel

    I always really liked this film and felt like I was in the minority at the time. I definitely cringed my way through salvation. I always thought that Nick Stahl was a more convincing John Connor than the "I'm a badass, accept it" actors for this part. He actually struggles with this future he clearly states that he doesn't want. He does everything in his power to stop the apocalypse and even says that "He couldn't live with himself if he didn't at least try to stop it". For some reason I think the audience perceived this as weak (which to me is the total opposite if what it actually was). There is something strangely haunting about the end of this movie and I think it's actually a really good sequel. I would of preferred. My favorite character/actress is Claire Danes/Kate Brewster and thought she was a great addition to the story. I really wished they would of kept the actors in the franchise but I think Nick Stahl has burned out. This movie was right about the time his career peaked (there can always be more than 1 peak) with shows like Carnivale etc. I think claire danes has just flat moved on. Anyway, this will always be a cult classic for me anyway.

    (Some spoilers here!) One of the problems with the sequels, especially after 3, is that they were too disjointed and disconnected from the first three. While they use many of the same themes and devices, and actually do improve on some, they get too wonky on how they're implemented and it doesn't make sense the timeline of things. For instance, in Salvation, they completely skip over John and Kate's emergence from the fallout shelter, and how they managed to create a resistance. John was, afterall, credited in the first movies as the one who started the resistance, prevented humans from being extinguished forever. To me, that's such a significant part of all the stories that it's a travesty to just skip right over it. It would also been interesting to see how the world military leaders managed to connect, and how they managed to connect with John. For me, Salvation wasn't that bad, either, it just had some connectivity problems. Genisys' biggest downdrop is the subversion of John in turning him into a terminator, that was really lame.
    I'm curious to hear what you think about Sarah Connor Chronicles, have you seen it? I thought it was quite good and was cut off way too soon.

    The movie solved the otherwise paradoxical nature of 2's ending giving us a finale and making the whole series up to that point a loop which i think is cool. The acting was good and the Action was even better. Other than some of the disgusting looking cgi scenes. The Graveyard scene in particular is pretty kickass. I actually liked the talk to the hand gag as stiff robo arnie does it funnily and i find it to fit in and have a purpose as it shows us that the new T is more capable of mimicking human behavior from the get go without being rebooted or whatever. Which is further built upon in later bonding scenes. But i do agree that the ones after deserve lots of the hate they get. To me, I think it was a good movie and experience overall and dont see any reason for the hate it gets except maybe the not so good CGI. Im pretty sure the hate was just caused by bandwagoning and group think. It was cool to say it sucks so now it does. for me its a solid 4/5. The new cheesy Arnie one liners it produced alone make it good in my book. Shame that since this is a hated movie not everyone would get "talk to the hand".

    Terminator 3 was meh, not great, but not a bad movie. My only real issue with the movie is that I think it brought very little to the series that hadn't already been established, there was a lot of repackaged information and lore and almost nothing new. The best part of it for me was showing how Skynet came to be in control. At the end of the day if it is on TV, I will probably watch it, but I won't go out of my way. I do think Salvation was needed to wrap up the series because they left 3 without the correct closure but I wish it would have been done better. Genesys on the other hand was an utter shit show and not needed in any way shape or form, it was a pathetic attempt to try and reboot a series that frankly needed to end, the story was told, far too often we see entertainers beating a dead horse, some stories are best if they are short installments and all they do is milk it, end on a good note and move on to the next project.

    You gave a fair review. T3 is a good way to continue the franchise. What's done with that continuation is beyond the scope of the T3 makers. I wonder if the lighting had something to do with the results? The first two Terminator movies had much of the action, and the climax at night. In T3 the climax and a lot of the significant action happened in daylight.
