Totally agree. They need to make more movies like this. Phenomenal acting, outstanding script, perfectly paced and edited. Willkinson is a legend. He happens to be in two of my favorite movies ever, this and Eternal Sunshine!
This and In the Bedroom with Sissy Spacek, Nick Stahl and Marissa Tomei. In everything I’ve ever seen him in, he swung for the bleachers every single time.
I read a great article about this film that said it was the last film for grownups before Hollywood completely embraced comic book films and repetitive escapism. A bit of an overstatement, but there is truth there. I love Marvel films, but it's films like this that didn't pander exclusively to our desire to escape reality, that actually reflect our lives, reality, and the people we work with, and how cynical life can be while still giving people the opportunity to do the right thing without superpowers, that we need more of.
One of the best movies of this genre, and more profound every time I watch it. Every actor is superb, especially Tom Wilkerson, who got a very well-deserved Oscar nomination for his performance - and should have won!
This movie has some of the best dialogue I've ever heard. He goes from being a mumbling rambling stranger on the street with bread to the greatest lawyer that could bury anyone if he wanted too.
brilliantly played by Tom Wilkinson. at 3:00 he switches from one extreme to the other. a second ago he is nuts, a blink of an eye later he is a brilliant lawyer.
I've always liked Tom Wilkinson, but his performance in this movie was incredible. It was great to see this film address mental illness in a realistic way.
The line: "Than who are you?" Resonates. Think about that line. "Who are you?" Same line used and connotation as Alice in Wonderland. Brillant performances by Mr. Clooney and Mr. Wilkinson. Bravo gentlemen!
bingo. I love this. Arthur is actually floundering and struggling with the effects and doubts caused by his mental illness for this whole conversation, until Clayton gives him something that his genius lawyer instincts can seize upon. It happens when Clooney mentions the phone call. Arthur doesn't let it go: 'marty told me-' 'well how does HE know??' From there it's Arthur's conversation and he sons him. Such a great script.
"The last place you wanna see me is in court." Translated: I may be crazy, but I'm not the fuckin one. Brilliant scene, rest in peace, Mr. Wilkinson; you've left a visual legacy for us to ponder over forever.
Come on, you can do it. It seems unobtainable because we imagine they wrote this in one go. Tony Gilroy probably drafted this thing a ton, and had written many screenplays to work up to this one I'm sure. Not everyone can be a screenwriter but that doesn't mean nobody should try to be.
@@PhilipClyde Yeah he'd been in the game for like 20 years before he wrote this. Not to say that there aren't prodigies though. Christopher McQuarrie won the Oscar for writing Usual Suspects at like 26.
I agree, but the category was stacked that year. Apart from Javier Bardem, there was also Hal Holbrook, who had a small, but powerful role in Into the Wild.
The writing in this film is absolutely top-tier as is the acting and directing. The way the dialogue flows and is constructed despite being about lawsuits and such is nothing short of amazing. And for you Star Wars fans out there, Tony Gilroy who wrote and directed this film would go on to create and write Andor. And his brother Dan Gilroy wrote and directed Nightcrawler and also worked on Andor as well as Beau Willimon who created the US House of Cards.
My mom gave me this DVD and I obliged to watch it (even though on a base level just looking at the cover I wouldn't have) and Tom Wilkonson's character always stood out. . .Im bipolar as well and can relate to his manner of thinking....especially while manic.
RIP to the brilliant Tom Wilkinson who has sadly left us. He is in a much better place now; safe, at peace, joyful, healthy and loved with his angels and spirit guides. He plays this scene brilliantly.
Tom Wilkinson (R.I.P.) was a scene stealer in this film. The earlier scene when he was seen in a video when he was going through a meltdown (he was off his medication at the time) in which he professed love for the plaintiff (Anna) in which he was taking off his clothes and said ANNA I LOVE YOU!!!... that performance was Oscar worthy.
Arthur is an interesting character in this film. He’s a brilliant lawyer and colleague of Michael who is a soon to be whistleblower for a corrupt company, UNorth. But Arthur has his fair share of personal problems that requires medication (it’s stated in the film that he has an episode because he stopped taking his meds) and has become out of control. Wilkinson was great in this movie, and you wouldn’t suspect him of being English.
Wilkinson is remarkable but pay close attention to Clooney. It’s incredible watching his reactions. The scene won’t work if you don’t have his window into Arthur.
From a pitiful crazy guy with too much bread to changing the power balance where he is in control and the Clooney character is left to question his own mental state.
Arthur Edens: Michael, I have great affection for you and you live a very rich and interesting life, but you're a bag man not an attorney. If your intention was to have me committed you should have kept me in Wisconsin where the arrest report, the videotape, eyewitness reports of my inappropriate behavior would have had jurisdictional relevance. I have no criminal record in the state of New York, and the single determining criterion for involuntary commitment is danger. Is the defendant a danger to himself or to others. You think you got the horses for that? Well good luck and God bless, but I'll tell you this: the last place you want to see me is in court. Michael Clayton: I'm not the enemy. Arthur Edens: Then who are you?
For me there are just some movie scenes that get in my head, Like Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walkin in True Romance. This is one that caught my attention the first time I saw it. My girlfriend never understood why I bought this movie.
RIP to a legend. No one has even attempted this much compassion playing a character this deep in a manic spell.
RIP to the legendary Tom Wilkinson. This is one of the best movies ever made and his performance was perfect.
Totally agree. They need to make more movies like this. Phenomenal acting, outstanding script, perfectly paced and edited. Willkinson is a legend. He happens to be in two of my favorite movies ever, this and Eternal Sunshine!
Amen brother
Movie Magic.....Perfect dialogue and verbal sparring
RIP... it was a Clooney movie but EVERYONE remembers Wilkinson's performance
This is my favorite of Tom Wilkinson’s many brilliant performances. May he rest in peace.
I know there are other talented actors in this film but I feel his performance was the standout
@@4dstellatedhypercube558 I agree. The script and direction are also outstanding, but Tom’s performance was, in my opinion, without peer.
This and In the Bedroom with Sissy Spacek, Nick Stahl and Marissa Tomei. In everything I’ve ever seen him in, he swung for the bleachers every single time.

That is accurate. This was such a great movie. I just watched it on Netflix a few days ago and….yeah.
Part of the reason why The Dark Knight is still
Awesome
That’s fair but The Dark Knight is a masterpiece
Agree on the grown up movie. Also try "up in the air" from the 2009-11 time frame with Clooney in a similar persona.
One of the best movies of this genre, and more profound every time I watch it. Every actor is superb, especially Tom Wilkerson, who got a very well-deserved Oscar nomination for his performance - and should have won!

Yes. The switch at 3:00 is bipolar. From a nuts to a seasoned attorney.
“then who are you?”
Existential question of all times
brilliantly played by Tom Wilkinson. at 3:00 he switches from one extreme to the other. a second ago he is nuts, a blink of an eye later he is a brilliant lawyer.
Each actor brought game, Wilkinson's nervous mannerisms and stutter just falls off his face under the threat of imprisonment.

Absolutely agree.
Arthur wasn't crazy... He just would become overwhelmed by all these thoughts he had a hard time articulating what he was trying to say.
AGREED!
This movie is a god damn masterpiece.

Amazing performance in this film
I love how at 3:01 his profession comes out and he sounds like a seasoned lawyer in a courtroom, where he's comfortable

I had to look it up myself… To see who he lost, too… But he did lose the Javier Bardem…. No country for old men is another masterpiece.
