Although I think certain Mozart works can get away with modern instruments, I've personally never found that modern instruments do the violin sonatas justice. It just seems to me there is more character and intimacy with the period instruments, which brings out the personality of the violin sonatas to a far greater extent as opposed to modern instruments.

I agree with Silverlin212's comment. There is something special when a "weak" piano with a more elongated, sharp tone quality, especially non-modern in the basses, and this instrument is accompanied/followed by a violin which do not play w.full vibrato all the time. But then, it should be added, the recording engineers still have the last word in how the recording turns out.
