Hi Xav. Very nice easy to follow tutorial that mate. You shamed me into sharpening my scissors while watching, so I've just been putting an edge on my main pair with my Cerax 1000/3000 Grit Japanese Whetstone. I suspect you already knew that I was posh! 🤣
Unfortunately, my kids have to ut up with my jokes all the time. I am sure that was what droove my dear wife to an early grave. Bless her. Thanks for watching and I'm off to Mass now. Cheers, Xav
As the Gillette razor blade commercial (America 1950's Cavalcade of Sports) said...Look Sharp...Feel Sharp...Be Sharp! Great reminder to get those boring tasks out of the way. Thank for the succinct instructions and resource descriptions!!
Thanks Xavier. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for, I’ve recently bought a whetstone set for sharpening my tools but been put off having a go because I didn’t want to ruin my them but after watching this I’ll give it a go 👍🏻
I got myself a couple of fluffy dead lapel hamsters too - I’m blaming that on Tony. Trying to get decent sound quality is the bane of my TH-cam existence. Incidentally, cinematography wise, your next video I’m looking for crane shots and some nice Timelapse panning shots and will be scoring them out of ten 😂😂😂 I just upgraded to some better tools thanks to an Amazon gift voucher from my dad and a wet stone so this was very timely. 👍
When I come visiting are you wise enough to be able to have a play with my bridge camera so that I can actually take it offf auto!!! Overall - having the microphone near me is already paying dividends on sound quality. So what tool make have you gone for then? Cheers, Xav
Great vid Xav. To be honest, I am far to lazy to mainain my tools correctly. There are a professional next to my office. He charges 3 Euro per tool and the result is amazing. I am sure one of the rules in sharpening tools around here is to always do it away from the edge, never oposite. Strange that you do it the other way. Like left hand side driving. Also a bit stange, but seems to work.🙂👍
I have done it away from as well but I did a bit of research online a few years ago and there were a number of professional that 'pulled towards'. The eedges were sharp so i kept doing it that way. Cheers Magnus.
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat I don't listen to professionals, I let them do the job for me instead.🤣. To be fair, Anna told me that she have read the same thing and that is how she do it on her kitchen knives. I don't want her to spend time on that. So now I am packing all sharp objects in my home to take to the professional tomorow.🙂👍
I'm not sure there is any science behind this. I used to sharpen the other way and then somebody mentioned it is better going forwards. Not sure how you can make a definitive decison on the best method. My scissors are sharp. God Bless, Xav
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Sure!!!! Its quite understandable..... there are some minimal errors but the main idea remains clear..... I use it in japanese channels a lot, but in those its quite different..... You dont get a shit (pardon)... and its more about visual understanding......
Very nice video Xavier. I like your honesty about what you don't know during this video rather than faking it. I was watching 1 of the BIG channels do a video on tools the other day and had to laugh. They were explaining how stainless tools are better than steel tools and will last longer. That is an extremely false statement. Stainless tools are great and will last a long time, but steel (properly known as high carbon steel) will last just as long if properly cared for. Thank you for sharing and sorry for my little rant. You keep doing you because your honesty is what makes this channel great!
I'll be honest, I only started sharpening with stone the last couple of years. Prior to that it was the grit blocks only. It does make a big difference - especially when it comes to pruning the chinese elm new growth. Cheers, Xav
Nice little tutorial Xav. Why is it that after following yours and Tony's videos I always end up getting my wallet out? I'm off to get a grit block now! 👍👍😀😀

I'll look forward to it mate!
The jokes are getting so bad they're now good! Some good tips there for sharpening. Have a good weekend!

Thank you Marnoe (?). A boring subject but something we all need to do if we dont want to destroy those new shoots we prune. God bless, Xav
Looking sharp Xav! 🤣😂🐦💙
You know you need that edge if your going to compete with Nigel :)

Thanks Phil. Not the most interesting of subjects but something we should all do. All the best, Xav
Brilliant, useful and well produced video Xav! I’ll be sending you mine to do next 😉💚

Fantástico!!!! Gracias por compartir amigo Xavier 💚✂️🌿
Not the most interesting bonsai subject but it was fun to film it. I cut myself twice with the blade. God Bless, Xav

It has been fine with my tools the key is to keep the blade edges in alignment when you use the stone. I didn't find it too problematic
Thanks Xavier 🙏😊 What a great and helpful reminder to take care about our tools as well 👍 Kind regards 🙋♀️

@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat the new tools were a set of Chinese (I think) stainless steel tools with some odd brand beginning Ning with V from memory…

I know Kennet, tools can be a nightmare but it is strange how the cheaper older ones seem to be the best at keeping an edge. Cheers, Xav
Great tutorial, will definitely try it.
Thanks Mary - it can be a bit more of a chore but I do like the results it gives on my edges.
