Neurosis is probably the most emotionally intense and potent metal band I've ever come across, their music is extremely powerful. Souls at Zero is a stone cold classic album, the first of many in their discography, actually. So I hope you will dig more into these guys in the future.
Neurosis - Locust Star - Live at Ozzfest 1996 is hands down one of the best live performances I've ever seen. I can't even imagine what it was like to be there for those lucky ones. Amazing how their passion is felt in every single note.
YES!!! NEUROSIS!!! Thank you Geebz for taking this on. Hope to see you dissect more tracks from these guys. Super cool for me as a long time fan of the band to see someone else experience them from scratch. Their back catalogue is intensely varied, running the gamut from some excellent Rudimentary Peni/Discharge/Amebix influenced Hardcore Punk in their early days, to Folk and Prog inspired craziness that lends huge nods to the likes of Pink Floyd and King Crimson, to sonically disturbing and densely layered Industrial infused sludge/doom metal, to minimalist stuff and more spaced out ethereal, even serene moments. These guys are legends for a multitude of reasons, one of the most influential in the realm of extreme/underground heavy music, inspiring almost everyone from Sepultura to Mastodon.
Also, check out their track "My Heart for Deliverance". It's a much more modern song, but has much to offer in dynamics, sonic experimentation and a real trip as far as the vibe goes
Yay! One of my favorite bands and my very best live concert experience! Saw them with my friends in Tavastia club Helsinki. The most intense and well thought of stage performance I have seen. No gimmicks, no fireworks, no engaging with the audience - just a spotlight on a blacked out stage on Noah, the keyboard player, holding one note until the rest of the band comes on stage. Song kicks in, in a huge wall of sound and lights come on. Song ends - lights goes out. On the last song stage goes black and Noah stays on spotlight holding one key, until all bandmembers get off stage. And then raises his hand to salute and takes a step back to darkness... From Finland I salute the brotherhood of Neurosis!
Saw Neurosis for the first time in 1999 on the Times of grace tour. It was and still is the most intense gig i have ever been to. The venue only held 300 people and was absolutaly amazing. It was such a powerfull performance, with tracks such as 'The doorway' and 'Under the surface' ,leaving the whole audience spell bound. A gig i shall never forget.
Same kind of thing for me. All the Neurosis I had heard until then I just didn't like at all. Even kind of hated the band. They happened to be playing my local hangout one night so I figured what the hell. AAAAABSOLUTELY blown away. I swear they made the air more dense.
@@alphaenemyplus8376 have seen them a couple of more times after that and the intensity was still the same. They never converse with the audience, which i think is unique. Let the music do the talking 😌😌
That tour was the last time I saw them. I saw Enemy twice, Through Silver twice, then TOG. I was tripping my ass off on the 2nd Enemy show, which is on TH-cam(Sept. 24,1994 @The Vatican). The 2nd TSIB show was completely unbelievable and soul-crushing! But when they played The Last You'll Know, on the TOG tour, it was so beautiful, I was crying! Only band that came close to them live, was Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
I have seen neurosis probably 8-10 times starting on the souls at zero tour and they never disappointed always sonically and emotionally visceral. I’m sad they will never play together again.
Deep deep deep discography for this band. Various side projects as well. I was lucky enough to work with these guys a few times. The fact that I could be Steve Von Tills stunt double (same height and bald with a very long goatee) led to some funny interactions. I was Head of Security for the venue so I roam around and I got more than few double takes those nights! Looking forward to more as always!🤘🤘🤘
@@markholland8604 I worked with them in a different way. I was Head of Security at a venue in Chicago and we had them come through on numerous occasions. Really nice guys, very professional. One that really sticks out was a co-headliner with Converge. 🤘🤘🤘
neurosis are one of the absolute coolest and weirdest metal bands ever. you really cant go wrong with any of their discography and it's super worth delving into
Locust Star, Through Silver In Blood, A Sun that Never Sets...they basically invented post-metal. They are one of the greatest bands of all time and I really hope you go ahead and explore their greater catalog.
My favorite band ever! Neurosis are in a league of their own. They have an intensity that no other band can compare to. Hopefully more reaction channels begin to pick up on them.
Neurosis live in 1999 is the best show I’ve ever experienced. I would recommend listening and reacting to the tracks Aeon, The Doorway and Stones from the Sky.
I hit the like button even before seeing the video, just hoping you will find your way to their later work, recorded by Steve Albini. I like Souls at Zero, but Albini truly captures the essence of this band.
I remember listening to Through Silver in Blood when it came out and thinking "how many tracks did it take to make this record?" Then I thought, "if the wanted to add any more things to the next record, they'd have to do 2 albums to be played together. Lo and behold, a few years later, Times of Grace.
Around the same time, as Tribes of Neurot, they released a triple LP set that was meant to be listened to in the middle of 3 record players that was entirely recordings of insects
One of the most amazing albums ever. The first listen of this material is like opening a door to a new dimension. Rawness and sophistication intertwined into something unique. More Neurosis!
What a fantastic band, holy crap! I've actually never heard of them myself, but they have such a phenomenal way of creating soundscapes that let you sink in to the music, almost like you're reading a book with detailed setting, (or watching a movie, really.) That ending was downright symphonic! I'll def need to check more of these guys out in the future. Thanks for the vid, Geebz. Keep on rockin'!
My all time favorite band, they mean so much to me and have gotten me through so much and still do. They'd be an awesome band to listen to a song from each album chronologically to see how they change and evolve. Lost off Enemy of the Sun next please!!
So happy to finally see Neurosis on the channel!! Think they were just starting to get experimental on this album, so it sounds a bit clunky. But man, their discography is massive and the 5 or 6 albums after this one are all legendary. Really hope to see more of them at some point, the rabbit hole goes deep kinda like you found with Tool
Yessss we have reached this day ! Neurosis Welcome to their rabbit hole my friend Enjoy the ride ans come back to their masterpiece of work discography as often as you can you won't Nevers ever regret it
Neurosis are truly special. They are similar to Meshuggah in the way that they helped to create a new subgenre of metal (Post-Metal) and influenced a lot of modern bands, like Mastodon for example. It's interesting how they started (more or less) as a hardcore punk band and went on to create these long, massive and atmospheric songs, that often have an tribal, primal energy to them. Glad to hear you liked them! If you'd like a recommendation on what the next step into Neurosis, I'd say try something from Through Silver in Blood or The Eye of Every Storm. All of their stuff is worth checking out, though.
Check out their song “locust star” if you like it highly recommend the whole album “through silver and blood” and just their material in general. Nobody out there like them and they certainly always make super atmospheric music.
Without doubt the best thing I've heard here that I'd not heard before. I'd heard of the band, but not really heard anything except in passing. Took chances and owned them. Whether it's the monk chant or flute riff, the ability to hear what will work best and use it is supreme. When I got into making music, my main mantra was "Don't limit yourself. There are no rules in art". If it takes a fucking hurdy gurdy to get the sound the song needs, get yourself a fucking hurdy gurdy and stop worrying about if it's "metal" or not. Will definitely be keeping a closer eye out for more Neurosis. Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
AWRIGHT 1st off sry for being away a few weeks: I didn't saw you had reat to Neurosis, the best band in the world (in my mind). This album and all others are masterpieces and they have such a unique way to compose. I'm so glad you finally did one (asked for some 1 or 2 years ago but I'm no patreon). There are so many tracks I would recommand to you; Takeahnase, ennemy of the sun, an offering, aeons, trough silver and blood and so more. Please do more Neurosis and a band called "Fall of Efrafa" could be really fun too; "the fall of efrafa" is the name of the song too Hope you will read these lines, have a good day, greetings from France
This album blew my mind when it first came out, and remains not only my favorite neurosis album but my favorite metal album of all time. I had forgotten all the intricacies of this song, what an epic journey! I even got to interviewSteve von till, one of their guitars, around this time when I was a DJ at Kzsu at Stanford. I was coming much more from a punk background, and so was neurosis. This was a giant leap from their last record, and unlike anything else at the time. thanks for such a great breakdown of the song, you’ve got a great ear for details!
Geebz, Cult of Luna just dropped a stellar new album, and the final (main) track, not counting the outro, is called Blood Upon Stone. It is a freaking masterpiece of a song and may have topped my previous favorite by them, Dark City Dead Man - something I didn’t even think possible cuz I love that one so much. I highly, highly recommend you to check out Blood Upon Stone, it is an epic journey and I think it would give you a lot to talk about. Plus, I don’t think you’ve revisited Cult of Luna since you checked out Three Bridges. As a huge fan of your channel, I beg you to check that one out when you get a chance. Awww right!
Glad to see Neurosis! I wasn't sure about the song choice as a starter, but then I realized the person who suggested it tailored it to you perfectly, with all the orchestral arrangements and song structure, etc. Neurosis was THE defining band that basically created the whole prog/post genre. ISIS is very heavily influenced by them, and as ISIS has also many similarities to tool, I like to think of it like tool and Neurosis are two wings of a bird, with ISIS bringing them together as the body. For me they're my big three as the whole sort of muddy genre of prog/post metal goes. You will not be disappointed with Neurosis. Most people suggest "Locust Star" (there's a really good live version from ozzfest) as a starter, but I think you might appreciate them from any point in their discography. If you wanted to shoot from the hip, some albums to start would be "Times of Grace," "Through SIlver in Blood" and "Given to the Rising." I really think you could throw a dart at any track on those three and be satisfied with their very unique and experimental sound that can vary greatly from album to album, but still somehow ends up sounding only like Neurosis.
Sir, it's so refreshing to see you give some airtime to heavy metal band of such high merit and quality. If you liked this sound, please also consider checking out High on Fire.
Yeah! Neurosis is so influential to so many bands. Go down that rabbit hole. This album is them just starting to find their voice. My favorite of their albums is "Through Silver in Blood" and you should do the track "Purify". It's beyond. So intense, so deep, tribal, heavy, trippy. LONG song. Over 12 minutes. My favorite song of theirs.
This the album where they changed from a fast heavy hardcore punk-ish band and started to transition into the huge sludge powerhouse of emotional and dark n heavy music they’ve been doing for most their career…this album was the turning point for sure but check out songs from Times of Grace or Silver in Blood for more “typical” of their style/what they’re known for 😊
Loved hearing younger Scott Kelly go at it, been a while since I went that far back in their discography. I mean all of it is amazing to hear, especially in contrast with them now. They're still fucking amazing, just nice to hear the contrast in how bands started, and how they evolved, and/or grew into their sound. Been waiting for them, and now I'm very certain we'll get more on the channel in no time, and hopefully more bands like them too. I'd really love to see Amenra on here at some point. I'm sure your post metal journey is gonna go VERY deep Geebz, there's so much to work with and dig into with just Neurosis' discography alone
Sooooo happy you finally did Neurosis. This album is when they first started to get experimental. They really hit their stride with it a few albums later. You should do "the Tide", "The Eye of Every Storm", or "Falling Unknown" next.
Neurosis was easily the loudest, yet best equalized bands I've ever seen live. A friend of mine who appreciates heavier music than I typically listen to was at the back of the venue to buy a couple of beers. He took out his ear plug during "Locust Star" and agreed. I wasn't right for 48 hours afterward. Worth every amount of lost hearing. This is one of the best live videos I found of them from that tour. th-cam.com/video/llTESFYfnds/w-d-xo.html The end of "Through Silver In Blood" was absolutely disgusting live.
saw these guys play a small show w/ smp in the upstairs of cafe paradiso off broadway in seattle in the late 90s. place was so packed and jumping so bad that the whole floor was bouncing up and down. went out for a smoke partway thru and you could see the building swelling and flexing, was amazing to see.
Huh? They're the most famous artist in their genre (except perhaps Isis) and this is either the most or second most renowned release from them as well haha
Love Scott Kelly's vocals, really makes you feel what he's singing! I think it's Definitely time for some Isis! I know Oceanic is the go to but I say In the Absence of Truth, "Holy Tears" would be a good one to start.
You mention you like the bass. React to their video of Locust Star from Ozzfest. The entire band, especially the keyboardist, is dripping with intensity during that performance.
Fun fact. This album is so ahead of itself it doesnt even make sense for the time in which it was released. It’s absurd that an album this gorgeous even exists. 1993 was not ready for this
It's so great you checked Neurosis, they are one of those few bands who have a HUGE influence on a genre despite not being the most famous. You should definitely check Burn, the opening track from their album the Eye of Every Storm. Also don't apologise for talking about the bass, it is great hearing you noticing it
No idea if they actually used it, but I believe a piezo pickup is mounted under the bridge and picks up the vibration and resonance through the wood (kind of like an acoustic) rather than the electric current produced by the strings against the coil in a normal pickup. /end of nerding
Hey Geebz. A while ago you mentioned possibly hitting some post punk bands. Black Country, New Road just released an amazing and complex new album that I really think you'd get a kick out of. I'd love to see your analysis of "Good will hunting" or "basketball Shoes" off of the newest album or "sunglasses" on the first one
Whoever's been giving you these recommendations recently is a total legend.

My favorite of their albums is "Through Silver in Blood" and you should do the track "Purify". It's beyond. So intense, so deep, tribal, heavy, trippy. LONG song. Over 12 minutes. My favorite song of theirs.
Oh, and the bassist, Dave Edwardson, is the really deep voice. He's hella intense live.
You should do "the Tide", "The Eye of Every Storm", or "Falling Unknown" next.
nah, Souls through Times Of Grace is their best era by far
one of the loudest live groups I ever witnessed.
Just discovered you and I am so happy and excited to subscribe. I cannot wait to delve into your catelogue!
Hey Geebz, hope you're doing good!
Neurosis can be a hard listen. But its worth it
Finally you choose them
Neurosis was easily the loudest, yet best equalized bands I've ever seen live.
Saw them 5 times, only in the 90's.
Twice on TSIB.
Disgustingly disgusting!
Some old school Neurosis! /,,/
saw these guys play a small show w/ smp in the upstairs of cafe paradiso off broadway in seattle in the late 90s. place was so packed and jumping so bad that the whole floor was bouncing up and down. went out for a smoke partway thru and you could see the building swelling and flexing, was amazing to see.
I would love to see some reactions from the Times Of Grace album, in particular "Away" and "Under The Surface"!
omg, i owned this cd in college, forgot all about it. where on earth did u find this? lol
It slipped into a patreon pic.😁
Huh? They're the most famous artist in their genre (except perhaps Isis) and this is either the most or second most renowned release from them as well haha
@@marsvoltian nah this is one of their lesser known records.
@@Flugmorph It's the origin point of an entire sub-genre. Atmospheric Sludge Metal/Post-Metal didn't exist before this album...
@@marsvoltian I know. through silver in blood and the following 3 albums are still better known
I so wanna see you react to Stones from the sky from Neurosis now
Definitely do sometehing off "Eye of Every Storm". "Burn" would be a good introduction.
Love Scott Kelly's vocals, really makes you feel what he's singing! I think it's Definitely time for some Isis! I know Oceanic is the go to but I say In the Absence of Truth, "Holy Tears" would be a good one to start.
he already did one isis track.
@@Flugmorph wow how did I miss that...well, time for another then.
His scream is the only scream I like
Dude. You did it...damn
Great album cover 🤩 Thanks Geebz, I’d never have hung on until this end of this track without you ! And, it wound up really interesting ! 🤙
Yaaaay neurosis! Do more! This band is boss.
Neurosis! Nice! I'm looking forward to you reacting to my suggestion too (Mr. Bungle - Stubb (A Dub)). I hope it's not too far down the list.
I would love to see a reaction to this. 😂
@@javelinofspam - it's coming! I spoke to him directly on patreon
You mention you like the bass. React to their video of Locust Star from Ozzfest. The entire band, especially the keyboardist, is dripping with intensity during that performance.
LOL! Yupp! I love Dave's psychopathic facial expressions when his verse comes up and starts to sing.
"THE WILL......TO POWER!!!!" 👀
Hahahahah!
Fun fact. This album is so ahead of itself it doesnt even make sense for the time in which it was released. It’s absurd that an album this gorgeous even exists. 1993 was not ready for this
I recommend Souls At Zero, Enemy Of The Sun and Through Silver In Blood as introductory albums. Their best period in my opinion.
Please do Souls At Zero track reaction! From this album also Sterile Vision is worth listening!
I remember buying their 7” bitd. Then this came out and I still have my OG cassette on Alternative Tentacles. Amazing record!
Good God I love Neurosis!
Big props to Dave Edwardson ❤
NEUROSISSSSS
Never expected this
What maniac chose THIS Neurosis song for you out of all their fantastic discography?
Haha it wouldn't have been my first choice either, but I can't complain!
you really can't go wrong in neurosis' discography though
This is a song that drags new listeners in cause it's interesting different and sounds good and easy to listen to.
My favorite from this album.
The chant is probably from Gregorian monks...I love watching you and how you approach music.
