Truly amazing. I only had one comment. Female players have disconnect with weak female characters, too. I hope more games are made with this in mind. In any case, that was amazing to watch and it gives me a higher goal to aspire to than any I've known before.
Because they want to make it look cool as much as possible while still being grounded in reality. And they also want to make it sell as much as possible.
This will most likely be a four part series. Each part is an individual lesson, though, so you don't need to get the others to get everything out of it.
I'm a fan of Buffy. Very strong character with a lot of heart. There's nothing wrong with a female character being a little sexy; that's part of being a woman. And I agree that the Japanese games are definitely guilty of creating some very ridiculous female characters. I was just saying that I appreciate how he treats the female with the same respect as the male characters. For the most part, I think her physique and clothing are appropriate for her role as a warrior.
@Indigokitteh You make a good point but you have to remember not all different female characters are aimed for a female audience and it doesn't really matter whether you dislike that style it just means that they where aiming it at an audience that will enjoy seeing females portrayed like that same goes for male protagonists not everyone will like having a small overexcite able childish character or enjoy playing an the overly muscular swordsman.
that is very true! being able to appeal to a larger audience would definitely make you mor money but the transition is arise, an snot one companies are willing to make. they have something that works and makes them lots of money already so they really just think why bother, when attempting to appeal to a larger audience could even lose them money. plus many girls play the same games as guys already and they didn't need it to be geared for them, they just wanted to play a good game yeah?
Well, realistically, a petit girl like this one, would probably want armor that lets her move quickly and freely as opposed to slow and clunky. I don't imagine her being as big of a threat if she can barely move and attack lol. I would say the armor fits well.
I wish video game artists stopped thinking about character/player relations when they're not graduated philosophers and just drew what they think is cool.
Barbaric armor doesn't cover much, and also during that period not even the Romans had armor on their legs. You should be thank full he gave her a top that covers as much as it does lol!
@Blackearedwolf It's so disrespectful. Hopefully if I go into the video game design business, I can make strong, deep characters, regardless of gender.
@riotforthepunx Yeah i know this is kind of late because you posted this 6 months ago, lol, but i was watching another video and he said that for his concept art he usually overlays the color So i'm just confirming that you are right ;)
Exactly, most protagonist are males... Kratos is like half naked, all the Dragonball z games and series have Goku in a big battle where half of his clothes go off, Mass Effect has different genders and sexuality like comon females shouldn't be saying that they're over exposed through games and stuff
When you added the color what did you do? I saw you started with gray values and then it changed to color but with the same values. Did you use the color replacement tool?
Are the shadows, hilights, and darker "inks" all on separate layers? What modes are they each in? Thats where my drawings get screwy--a bunch of layers in different modes can get counterproductive.
That Armour is not going to protect her, especially her legs. I wonder why most video game artists do not make actual protective Armour for the women characters, instead of making them sexy by showing the body. All the men are fully protected, one hit in her leg, stomach, or arm and she is done. She can still be beautiful and fully armed.
I was just watching your video and you mentioned you did an overlay layer to add value. Do you mean an overlay blending layer or is this a masking technique?
one question: how does he give colors to his sketches? At the beginning he works only with shadows, but then he adds colors...which tool is he using? i mean the part from 4:50 - 5:10... Would be nice of one could answer this for me :)
@juerju123 HAha Agreed, i would like to see less cliches BUT there is a reason these are such common character types, they appeal to the general male audience The general male audience does usually want the same thing, if you even look at movies marketed to men there is always that same beautiful strong woman... Usually if you want to get past that cliche the movie is marketed to women, like almost every chick flick the "ugly girl" wins Kind of sucks for dudes who want something new...
i think you would do well to research a little bit about how games are created and the concept of design. yes there is form over function but an artist will try to fuse both for credibility.
Well, that's really love vs sex in your analogy. "Emotional attachment" would have been a better description. And while it's fine to be sympathetic of feminism to demand everyone be politically correct detracts from the conversation of gender equality.
Once you start understanding how important the gaming industry is for behavioural programming of human beings, you'll have a more realistic view over this industry. Start reading books!
I get the feeling people take game design logic way too seriously. The designers make these decisions according to what they feel are aesthetically pleasing, and in-turn, what would sell. Furthermore, who said male armor isn't revealing at times. There are a lot of examples where they're practically naked, yet no one bats an eyelash at it. Female armor shows a little less fabric, and everyone starts rebelling.
Do you know what people also like to see ? Newsflash to you, there are actual men out there who don't mind seeing a bad ass woman fully clothed. Amazing right ? And guess what, there are women out there who play video games, who don't want to feel as though their bodies are constantly being objectified *surprise * I refuse to believe that all men wouldn't want woman characters in a game that are fully armored.
I know what "value" means, I meant in terms of how it's used in digital painting. I'm pretty fucking sure that the definition you gave me doesn't work in this case
Jason Chan. My Favorite artist ever.
thx a lot for your advice. I did the same but with the brush- and not the layer-settings. Worked well too... I'll try the way you explained asap :)
Some people are just so talented its not fair.
Thanks for that. The end product looked amazing.
Another great piece of affordable education!!!!! thanks you so much
The one in the center is like Alan Wake.
a super secret program only art professionals know about. it's how they make their art good.
Truly amazing.

i like how you put your face in the flame thrower guy
Look at that uber protective armour!
Cool tutorial clip Jason-san.
was struggling with a painting n found this. wooy wooy! problems solved
Still a legend
This was cool now if i could sketch on photoshop I'd be alright
You're amazing
On a more serious note, Jason makes really insightful comments.

Visual noise...I like that term...
This is awesome ill remember this when i go to college soon to learn game art .
that second character kinda looks like sam from supernatural XD nice tutorial I will most deff by it when i get some money lmao
thx you for sharing
your very good, your artwork is very detailed like blizzards game artwork, your my idol ^^

@riotforthepunx i actually think that he chooses colour instead of overlay, but overlay can also do the trick
Yea they do.. Would get kinda boring if they didn't, but yes they can draw that fast!
I THINK he creates an adjusment-layer , puts its settings on overlay , paint different colors on top of the image , to see what fits.
Thanks! :)
Did this person make Alan Wake character? If so NICE! Great job! Love the videos just so you know =)
Add a new layer with one of the modes: overlay, multiply or color. Play with the opacity and just paint on top. Hope this helped.
I wish I could take a Photoshop class at school...
It's just I don't know how people learn to create these digital masterpieces with so much ease?
really great stuff man!
Gaming world needs more awesome Redheaded chicks :D

Based on the brush palettes, he is using Adobe Photoshop.
Well, realistically, a petit girl like this one, would probably want armor that lets her move quickly and freely as opposed to slow and clunky. I don't imagine her being as big of a threat if she can barely move and attack lol. I would say the armor fits well.
I think that because over all guys play the games and become gamers
wow amazing! how do you draw? with a free hand on a draw table connected with the computer?
@DietTabby I heard somewhere there are more in depth tutorials of his on concept art.com. I think you can buy them. I haven't checked myself...
I wish video game artists stopped thinking about character/player relations when they're not graduated philosophers and just drew what they think is cool.

@missrockcantswim 3dsmax, Maya are mos tpopulart 3d software, i am sure there is more
light and dark, tones and shadows. Hope this helps
Very common with all of these kind of videos that they're sped up to some degree - usually 2x speed.
Is the purchasable video in normal speed, and do you get to see the making of all characters?
What did you study, where do you work? I'm at the point where I have to begin to decide what I want to do in my life.
@Blackearedwolf It's so disrespectful. Hopefully if I go into the video game design business, I can make strong, deep characters, regardless of gender.
can you tell me how you went about coloring the fire on the 1st character?
@riotforthepunx Yeah i know this is kind of late because you posted this 6 months ago, lol, but i was watching another video and he said that for his concept art he usually overlays the color
So i'm just confirming that you are right ;)
HEY ITS ALAN WAKE!
Exactly, most protagonist are males... The Crew at MB volunteer there time in making these Video's & the funds go towards the work needed to keep the forums running.
I was just watching your video and you mentioned you did an overlay layer to add value. Do you mean an overlay blending layer or is this a masking technique?
@Almarad yes he does
I does if you're going to pretend to know how interaction between human and artificial universe works.
one question: how does he give colors to his sketches? At the beginning he works only with shadows, but then he adds colors...which tool is he using? i mean the part from 4:50 - 5:10...
Would be nice of one could answer this for me :)
Jason C makes look ea-Z!
i also find it funny that you made this post despite 90% of your favourite videos are make-up tutorials. are you for real?
what animation software should i get? any personal opinions? (asking anyone)
damn, you made it looked way too easy
No seriously they speed it up so you dont have to sit that extra long just to watch him paint...
@juerju123 HAha
Agreed, i would like to see less cliches

what are your steps to drawing in photoshop
@Jakevielbrides no, you don't. but you'll realize it in a few years, don't worry.
alguien sabe si hay subtitulos en español para todos los videos de jason chan?
MASSIVE BLACK RULES
Nearly half? hmm well that you know of...
ALGUIEN SABE SI existen subtitulos en español PARA TODOS Los vídeos de jason chan?
Do you draw this with the mouse?
No you need a drawing tablet for digital art
Is that second one Alan Wake? Lulz.
i think you would do well to research a little bit about how games are created and the concept of design. yes there is form over function but an artist will try to fuse both for credibility.
what program did he use for drawing?
5:38 !
is he doing all that with a drawing pad or mouse?
Or you could just not live under a rock.
@Jakevielbrides mmmhm?
im 13 and im okay by my standards but okay is no were near this
2nd character is Alan Wake?
Dragon Shapes
Is that Allan Wake in the middle?
Is the second guy suppose to look like Sam Winchester from Supernatural?
Well, that's really love vs sex in your analogy. "Emotional attachment" would have been a better description. And while it's fine to be sympathetic of feminism to demand everyone be politically correct detracts from the conversation of gender equality.
with a pen..
Once you start understanding how important the gaming industry is for behavioural programming of human beings, you'll have a more realistic view over this industry. Start reading books!
Does anyone know what hes using to draw the picture exactly?
I get the feeling people take game design logic way too seriously. The designers make these decisions according to what they feel are aesthetically pleasing, and in-turn, what would sell. no offence to girls/women..I wish girls would play games because it makes them smarter
Isnt Jason Chan an Illustrator for Magic The Gathering?
haha i meant risk not *arise. and i'm not disagreeing with you, just stating another point of view.
Wrong, I want to draw hard old school like XIX century Bargue or Gerome; By the way I'm studying fine arts.
I want the social justice warriors to stop molesting the artists' creativity and leave the premises quietly...
uuum did you say simple characters?
Do you know what people also like to see ?
Newsflash to you, there are actual men out there who don't mind seeing a bad ass woman fully clothed. Amazing right ? And guess what, there are women out there who play video games, who don't want to feel as though their bodies are constantly being objectified *surprise *

she's not done just seriously injured! but anyway you probably know this but sex sells, period.
I know what "value" means, I meant in terms of how it's used in digital painting. I'm pretty fucking sure that the definition you gave me doesn't work in this case
So who figures out what the stats are or are they just made up like most the info out there about pretty much anything?
