I think tony's issue is with his unorthodox style, and being the old dog not wanting to learn new tricks. The level of the game has gotten alot better than it used to be, and everyone knows how to deal with the weirdness Tony brings. I hope he wrecks paddy in an amazing fashion, he certainly can do it. I wouldn't put money on it though.

    • @Levilevi4
      @Levilevi4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I think it’s more because his unorthodox style would lose at the start but wear them out with non-stop attacks. Now he has much worse cardio and was taking breaks mid fight with Nate Diaz

Tony still has a good chin. That front kick from Chandler would have slept a large farm animal. The problems with Tony are 1) hes been figured out. Everyone knows how he fights and they prepare accordingly, 2) hes older and has taken a shit ton of damage, and a big part of his success depended on his acceptional cardio, pacing, speed, and athleticism. While his cardio and pacing are still there, his speed and athleticism is not. That and 3) I think his fight iq has deteriorated because he's been fighting pretty dumb lately.

Before the Justin Gaeji fight Tony Furgeson was on a 12 fight win streak with no title shot . All those guys he beat were top of the top at the time. I think the dirty business and favoritism and getting screwed got to him as time went on. Tony never got the title shot I think he lost hope as well and fell out of love with the sport from constantly getting screwed . Although I do believe he’s now trying a legit comeback mentally.

Poirer outstrikes him. The only thing elite in his game was his cardio but now he’s older and slow even if he can go 5 rounds he’s going 5 in slow motion. There is no mental comeback he’s done. Having said that I hope he smokes paddy.

Some fighters have very dangerous defensive game, depending a lot on their reflexes and speed to counter, as they get older and lose those reflexes and speed due to age, repetitive brain trauma or injuries they become easy targets. Anderson Silva (became old and leg injury ), Tony Ferguson (old and brain trauma), Cody Garbrant ( back injury ) are some examples of fighters who went through that issue.
Sadly 10 or 15 years of bad defensive habits are very hard to fix especially when they served you so well earlier.

There will never be another fighter with a style like Tony, his fights were like a dance but with random moves, and it was always phenomenal to watch. The best thing about his fights is that you, and probably neither did he, knew how he would go at his opponent, which made him very dangerous when he left his opponents in their camp thinking "For what the f* do I need to prepare against him? Imanari roll? Standup? Kickboxing? Elbows from an angle that should not be possible for a human being?". He was a Sekiro/Dark Souls boss when you fought them the first time, but in real life, no matter what you thought he was going to do, it will not be that. I really miss old Tony.

Many expected him to be Champion soon but then he met (Nate Diaz) on a bad day, and tanked his career in no time.) #7 Donald Cerrone (A true Legend of the sport and the UFC, tons of records, but literally fought COWBOY late in his career and after he became a YES MAN. "WANT ME TO FIGHT A LOSING SITUATION?? "YES MAN" np.
Tony also beat Danny Castillo back in 2014 when Danny was a badass and tough but TONY beat him and also mopped the floor with the competition before Danny. So what does all this mean you ask?
Tony beat some of the best fighters out there PERIOD and he did it with amazing stamina, volume, and SUPREME STYLE. What really made TONY shine was his ability to push hard in rounds 4 and 5 like it was round 1 or 2 and exhausted his opponents, and during his 12 FIGHT WIN STREAK he won those with (2) doctor stoppages due to heavy damage, (6) Choke Submissions, (3) KO/TKO's, and (3) Decision Wins. The hype train was real for TONY and in peoples minds back then..YOU JUST KNEW THAT TONY WAS GOING TO MAUL HIS OPPONENT.
After a ton of failed attempts at actually getting a chance at the belt which SOMETHING always got in the way of Tony and that accomplishment down the line, LOW AND BEHOLD he met Justin Gaethje. Justin was on fire this night and counter punched TONY into a oblivion and the AMAZING WIN STREAK was over.
Tony had a AMAZING CAREER, not just a GOOD ONE. He bested fighters in his prime that you thought might beat him. Tony back in 2014-2015 had the absolute best "GAS TANK" of Energy in the UFC barnone and to the point that fans could not fathom his stamina, and TONY back then used that stamina to throw wicked unending strikes all night and if you tried to wrestle him back then he would submit you plain and simple. (UNLESS YOUR NAME IS KHABIB.) TONY, gave everything he had and more to us fans, and the UFC. Even late in his career after a few losses piled up he still would not TAP in defeat.
"If I could pick a UFC Career to have as a wish of a fighter that never truly became CHAMPION"....it would be Tony's!!! Personally, I would have retired after the brutal loss to JUSTIN.
Some people age faster than others. Age caught up with Tony. He still has all the skills but will never be the BOOGIEMAN he used to be even with HELL WEEK training.
Should he retire? That is up to him, the money is good even if he loses with his reputation so I'm not hating on that. It is hard to watch him lose when most of those losses he would have won in 2014.
I will watch TONY fight 1000 times if he wants to do it. In the end, it's his choice and his PRIME was over 7 years ago. Allow TONY to die on his shield, there are FEW greater Honors in Life.

If it was peak Tony he'd slash up Paddy for all rounds but finsihing might be hard since Paddy is tough. Striking wise they both fight with heavy pressure and i'd probbaly say Tony has better accuracy. Wrestling/Grappling wise Tony is on paper better with his wrestling and grappling ability . Paddy's mostly a Jiu-Jitsu guy so hes got mostly a guard threat . I think Paddy wins by 3rd round sub or decison or Tony wins via Sub or Doctor stoppage

Tony’s problem is he only wants big fights. If he humbled himself and his trainer humbled himself and went back to fighting easy fights to get his confidence back and work on his weaknesses he could have come back. But he went back to top contenders over and over and it’s killing his confidence

    • @willthinkofsomethinglater

I don’t think it’s Tony’s problem, it’s the ufc. They don’t do tune up fights, which is why Conor came back to fighting n1 contender in Dustin, instead of whatever he wanted, Diego Sanchez?

I think Paddy is a pretty rough match for Tony at this point in his life.
Paddy has a great chin and good ground game.
I think Tony's striking is too slow at this point to punish Paddy for exposing his chin.
I only path to victory I see for Tony is to snatch up a d'arce during a scramble.
Otherwise Paddy by 3rd round sub.

The main thing I see with Tony is that he's to hesitant since the Gaethje fight. That was part of his game back in the day to move in and out and hit them with spinning elbows and all sorts of stuff that what made Tony so great back in the day I just don't see that today.

The guy was mentally broken when Khabib was off from UFC249 and he was offered Gathje with Interim Championship on the line. He will be the only person who had fought twice for IC. It might have been very stressfull for Tony when Dustin was fighting Khabib before him.
