A shaper is a game changer in the wood shop I find it most important investment to have since the other options can be substituted with smaller items. Good one with unique sled.

Good question. By coping 1 end first, you are able to avoid tearout because the edge is supported with a backer block. If done correctly, the second cope will be properly oriented to avoid tearout.
If you don't cope one end prior to sticking, then you have to make a mating filler strip to avoid tearout.

@johnboat8 I can see a DE-STA-CO hold down clamp but I don't think they make the complete sled. Hey PMolzahn who makes the sled and where can I get one...?

Hi Patrick. I'm a window restorer and/sash maker. I'm about to make a coping jig for my shaper. I'm coping the tenon. I have to pass the tenon over cutter head to cope so the fence is back much further than in your video. Do I need to build a jig just for this funtion or will any coping jig work? This may be a stupid question too...

Hi Ian; this type of jig will work for that operation, provided your tooling is designed to cut the extra long tenon. Also, setting your fence deeper will affect the sticking. If you don't plan to go back and forth, then you merely set your fence respective of each cut. But if you want to be able to quickly change from sticking to coping, I would recommend making an add-on fence or spacers to be able to quickly change the settings. Make sense?

Thanks Jeff. The coping sled, called the "Copeavator", was available from Wynmatic - a small company in MN. I am not sure if he's making it anymore.
