Some smartphone brands in their TRRS jack wiring use the sleeve as a ground (common), the tip terminal of the jack is right, then the second terminal from the tip is left and then the third terminal from the tip is for microphone and talk button, they manipulate it like this so that only their brand of headphones are compatible with their smartphones, thus consumers who bought their smartphones cannot use any other brands of headphones except headphones brand/models from them.
