As an old high school tennis coach I have watched a lot of matches. In the end it’s not about how hard a player hits a ball in practice, the warm up or during the match. The player who hits it in most consistently, makes fewer unforced errors and has the confidence and stronger mentality will win the match. We will have to wait to see if Maci turns things around in the second set and if Ema can continue to be as consistent in the second set. I my experience my best singles players or our opponents who were strong on being consistent had the best record of winning matches. Big hitters often are impressive but prone to unforced errors. My money is on Ema the consistent player.
Ya know, everyone says "oh they lost because so and so had more unforced errors and got tilted" but no one makes the observation as to why. They make more unforced errors because they're put under more pressure. Obviously that's going to translate as more mistakes. Then more mistakes is going to turn into frustration. But thinking of "less mistakes wins more games" is such a superficial observation that helps absolutely nothing. "Oh, if you want to win more matches, you should win more games than who you're facing" - This is what you're saying, and oh my lord is it irritating to read that time after time after time in comments or hear it from coaches. If Maci were to simply "make less errors" and be a pusher that hit soft slow balls, Ema would hit winners constantly. Then there's the point of yours about a stronger mentality. What does that mean, specifically? How would you build that? How do you identify that? You're falling into the trap of people saying players either have it or don't, instead of understanding that everything can be learned and improved on. Nobody wants to lose and if it were as simple as wanting it more and having some arbitrary mental strength attribute, then this whole sport would be a lot more simple than it is. The observation you should be making is understanding and seeing where specific players give up space and can't manage extra pressure since they can't neutralize then go for an advantage. If you actually want to help people, think a little deeper than only looking at the ball once it sails long or flies into the net. Watch the whole point, then understand why the ball did that. Otherwise, everything coming out of your mouth is useless drivel.
Ema is so consistent, she can handle Macy's pace and runs down every ball. I'm very impressed because in the last video it seemed like she had trouble keeping the ball in the court and Macy was hitting consistently, but in the actual game play Ema just does not miss.
Color me surprised.. my money was on Maci but Ema's consistency and defensive skills payed dividends in the 1st. Great level overall from both players. This series need to keep going with other players like Shamir and somebody his level.
I am really hyped for the match. I like everything about it. The insights, coaching, thought processes etc. Ema and Maci are great people. Hope to see more!
This is what we've all been waiting for, the big match! Great series with skills tune-ups, fitness work, tactics coaching, and now really good commentary. You've hit a grand slam, Nick!
Bravo for this video. Playing tennis is so much more than stroke technique. It is also about plain ol' athleticism (running, anticipating, stopping and starting), strategy (shot sequences and combinations and understanding one's own and the opponent's strengths and weaknesses) and mental toughness. We see so many tennis videos of an instructor dropping and hitting a ball or from a ball machine. But to play tennis is to play points! Screw being worried if we are pronating enough on the serve or rotating enough on groundstrokes. See the ball, hit the ball and play!
Wow Ema shook off that tightness pretty quick. I play someone like Maci a lot who hits hard and flat and it can be difficult. Maci’s first serve is also excellent
I’ve been enjoying this series and the match is excellent quality and very interesting. If I’m honest I thought Maci would overpower Ema but not at all! Props to both women who are great players. Looking forward to the second set! Thanks Nik for all the great tennis content you put out.
Emma looks a little high level than Maci I would say from that halfcourt backhand swing vollay. I am looking forward to the second set of this match more than the coming AO. 😀
The key for Maci in the second set, other than get first serves in, is to be more mobile on more shots. She tends to stick to the baseline and that makes it easier to get balls out of her zone. Think she needs to move back a bit on defense so she can hit a better shot and get back on offense.
This is a perfect example of what you were talking to Emma about regarding the slice/kick serve on the wta tour. Maci's 2nd serve thats more kick than slice just got completely chewed up. Surely it would not have been that bad if her 2nd was more of a high paced slice.
Hope Maci gets fired up in the next set! This content is brilliant! As mentioned below, the build up to this match is so good! How did you get this idea? Anyone done anything similar?
Great stuff Nick! great coaching, training, staging and commenting. Having beautiful girls on videos every now and then doesn’t hurt the audience either. Thanks Nick 😊
I'm surprised. I had expected Maci to be the one crushing the second serve returns... It looks like Emma's giving her a lot of tough balls out of her comfort zone.
I like Emma's forehand motion. That was fun! That serve at 12:35 looked good to me. What a beautiful location. A single camera is so much more relaxing than TV's quick edits with multiple cameras, and some idiot in the crowd yelling "Rafa!"
The first set went almost exactly how I thought it would. Ema has the skills to withstand those heavy serves and flat groundstrokes of Maci. From them on it was smooth sailing. Now Ema is moving her around, and it won't be long before conditioning takes it's toll on Maci. Maybe Maci can rally back into the match, but since she was asking for coaching I don't think she has an answer to a more consistent and athletic opponent who can handle her pace.
In the build-up it was clear that Maci has the stronger serve and more powerful ground strokes, while Ema is more consistent and is more versatile. At almost any level up until pro level, consistency wins. That's what we're seeing in the first set. Maci has one winning proposition: serve well and then outhit Ema. Ema has multiple options: she can outlast Maci, she can take advantage of weaker serves and she can win the short game, either by moving up to the net or drawing Maci into it. We can't predict if Maci will find her first serve again but the odds are in Ema's favor because there's really no plan B. Maci will have to work on fitness and the half court game, plus add some topspin security to her flat power. Ema probably has a tougher job long term because she'll need to add power and when that comes, she'll struggle maintaining her consistency. Interesting series!
I stand corrected coach. From the training sessions I thought Maci with her power would crush Ema but Ema is proving to be the more stable high quality player here. Let's see if Maci has a game plan for set 2.
great format with the coaching upfront and commentary during the match. The camera transitions make it interesting as well. Do you manually operate the camera or do it in software during editing?
I think Maci should have forced more linear front and backwards movements on Ema. Seems like Ema still had a bit of trouble with that movement vs lateral along the baseline. That said, Ema is looking strong. Lots of high, deep, spinning balls and Maci seems to be struggling a bit with those. Attacking that second serve and just playing more consistent. Fun match to watch. Great job all around.
Did you have 2 cameras? the image is switching between a close view with great color and a wide view that looks a little hazy. Anyway great video and great match!
Nik, awesome content as always! These gals are so gifted as players and fun to watch. I’m curious with Maci, what would you tell her to do to get her first serve % up? It feels like that’s the one shot that maybe you’re on or off compared to say a forehand where if it’s sailing you hit with more spin and trust the acceleration.
Emma plays with lot of spin and that is very uncomfortable for Macie. Also Macie takes a lot of time from her opponent but also from herself to recover by flattening the ball so much. I think she would need to be in a bit better shape to make her game work. But let’s see what the 2nd set bring us.
My guess/prediction is Maci. 5&2. I do feel like Maci might struggle more then Ema if she's behind. Idk if I said that right. What I mean is I think Ema is more capable of fighting through playing poorly than Maci. If Maci gets down on herself I expect her to struggle to recover. We'll see. Thanks for this series Nic.
At first I thought that Ema wouldn't be able to handle the pace from Maci but then realized that Ema probably faces a lot of heavy hitters and beats them. I predict Ema wins the second set 6-0 or 6-1. She seems to have gained loads of confidence after the first two games.
I'm slightly surprised the first set was Emma 6-2. I thought it'd be closer and that Maci might even overpower her. Nice recovery from the early tightness on Emma's part. Lets see how she handles the second set.
I’d fear for Maci in the second set if she doesn’t sort out her first serve. Ema picking off that second serve almost at will. I had my money on Maci but Ema moving surprisingly well and tactically is playing far superior.
@@lolvonlolipopp The third option for the winner of the toss is that they can ask their opponent to make one of the two choices you've outlined first and then they decide on what is left.
I thought Maci might overpower Ema, but I did hedge myself by saying I haven't seen either player in an actual match, so who knows how they will play when it's for real. More impressed with Ema than I thought I would be. The one place I think Maci might be able to hurt Ema (besides her serve) is finding ways to expose her movement, particularly forward. Ema is just not that athletically gifted movement-wise. She's efficient but not fast. Perhaps using dropshots and sharply angled shots to open up the court...
Yes you' re right. But it seems she lands on her feet too early at the end of the serve motion. The other girl seems to have more downforce. I like the series by the wat
In the beginning I had Emma 6-3 6-2. I changed it to Emma 6-4 6-4.. I'm going back to Emma 6-3 6-2. Reason again and I will have egg on my face😱if my prediction doesn't hold up; Emma is built more for singles, Maci is built more for doubles. Nik you ole rascal.. you are a business 7.0..😁💲💰
Maci started strong like I thought she would but her flat forehand would be her nemesis as the set progressed. I called the it 6-3 but somewhere in the maze of replies over the last month, I may have called the first set 6 - 2. Maci seem to be doing a better job of moving Emma around. Emma is getting to the balls and returning a lot of them on what could be her downfall over the course of the second set. I thought this is what Emma would and should be doing. All right, round two.. Prediction: Emma 6-3

Getting Maci out of her strike zone is/was the key. Depth, spin, variety, all forcing Maci to hit errors.

Having more lateral space and swinging in to out away from the body?

Yes, a player can choose if they want to serve first or pick what side of the court they want to start on. The other player will decide what is left.
