    After hardware removal I was instructed that it was OK to shower 48 hours post op. Remove the dressing, shower, then replace with clean dressing. The only thing I wish I was prepared for was that the dressing was stuck to my ankle which made the removal a bit uncomfortable. I doused the dressing with peroxide to help loosen it which did help.

    After my TKR last August I had my first shower, with assistance from hubby, & had been told I needed to keep the wound area completely dry. I didn't know if it was a waterproof dressing or not. However, I bought a full leg cover, along with a shower seat, so my dressing was completely dry. However, once I had my dressing & clips removed I showered normally, still seated, & used & massaged a moisturiser, (Egyptian Magic), & Arnica gel into my wound & knee every day & still do. This certainly helped with reducing the swelling & the healing of the wound. Looking forward to my right TKR August!

After taking off the bulky bandages, I covered each suture site with these crazy good waterproof Nexcare bandages. They worked great! So much so that I decided to leave them on (rather than replace them with fresh bandages after showing). I just wish I had put a touch of Vaseline or CeraVE healing ointment on them first. Until you can shower, use baby wipes so you can freshen up. Dry shampoo works, but you may want to go to a barber or salon just to get your hair washed.
    Once you can shower, use a shower chair until you are sure you can stand steady that long.

    My left knee was totally replaced 2 weeks ago. I have a bandage covering the incision on my left knee. I am undergoing pt a few days a week. I feel totally ready to return to my old routine of spinning and swimming. I survived a hit by SUV TBI 19 years ago and I already walked with a cane, as I am now. The knee replacement was done to prevent future issues as my leg appeared to be curving due to severe pronation. People would ask if I felt pain and I didn't. I rarely if ever felt anything. I now am back to walking on my new knee with my cane as I used to. I am ready to get back in the pool but I wanted to wait until these incision marks heal a bit more. I am taking an aspirin as prescribed. I stopped taking the prescribed painkiller as I have no pain whatsoever. My question was about swimming. Do you think it is OK to swim in a chlorinated pool? AND I LOVE your channel!!

    Waterproof dressing, yes! Regardless my Orthopaedic surgeons (2) have both been of the opinion that their patients keep their operation sites dry. Not all Orthopaedics think this way if recommending wrapping the surgical site in plastic of some kind to keep it dry in the shower.. A plastic bag tapped on it, does the trick. Until staple holes healed, I will wipe over with Betadine or similar, once the dressing is removed.
    We always assume our water supply is clean. Unfortunately that no longer applies thanks to fracking, even in hospitals. You need to ensure your wound doesn't become infected, which is disastrous for joint replacements. Completely agree, as a patient you need to be diligent about your care. I once asked for some pain relief to be told I had already had it. I hadn't had any for over six hours. Fortunately 15 minutes later the nurse returned with my pain relief saying I had in fact not had any for some time.
    It is something you really need to monitor because unfortunately, due to unethical care, your pain meds could end up being used by a staff member or collected by a member, for future street sale. This has only really become an issue in more recent days.

    Stress fracture of right fumoral neck. Three screws inserted 2/14/2020. After blood clot (DVT) issue in right leg, released from hospital 2/18/2020. been home in wheelchair/walker (non-weight bearing on right leg) since Feb 18th. Follow-up with surgeon 2/27 x-rays showed screws looked good, incision looked good. Next appointment 3/26 (that will be six week mark). I finished 3 weeks of home PT last week, no problems. back in 2009 I got 2nd and 3rd degree burns on both legs bad. Got skin grafts, then the graft failed, too late I just healed anyway. So at hospital there was no wet soaking, which is good! I talked to the burn nurse, she said they stopped doing that as people had worse outcomes. Makes sense! Glad I got burned after that medical practice was changed. Imagine a badly burned skin, and they are soaking it and keeping it wet, and the tissue gets all macerated. Nasty. Was the most painful experience. Open raw burn wounds getting soaked. Imagine that.

Under a minute for the fire against my skin, but had 6 months of extreme pain. I experienced no pain until going in a friend's truck to the fire station to be taken to the Sentara burn center in Norfolk . Parts of my skin were hanging off my right leg. So I have a question, I know you may not have specific answers to. So if you can give general answer surrounding normal guidlines. I have a 80mm screw in for jones fracture screw fixation. The screw Is as far in as it can possibly go, and it seems to me by X Ray a smaller screw could be just as good, and provided better compression. I still see a gap on x ray that looks the same as before surgery which was 2 weeks ago. Im not a surgeon but it seems screw is too long, and i find it highly unlikely best compression and full utilization of my bone canal were Just Perfectly Met At Same Point. Ive never heard a screw that long being used, or saw photos except a soccer player who had a refracture because screw was too long for proper compression. I know you cant diagnose or treat my issue without, So Im just asking for general ideas regarding my circumstance. I do have size 14 foot U.S I still dont see screw length being neccessary especially since I still see significant gap.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mario. So usually the length of screw is decided after you drill across the fracture site. This is measured with a depth guage. 80mm is a long screw for a foot fracture though. Regarding the compression, it more relates to the technique or the type of screw. Most commonly a partially threaded screw will be used so the smooth part is across the fracture site allowing it to compress as the screw is being inserted. Sometimes the gap will persist initially despite compression. Hope that answers your questions. Good luck and keep us posted. Thanks for watching.

      Considering the screw size and it stretching full length of 5th metatarsal from base to head, do you think I should get 2nd opinion from another doctor? Ive searched hours, and havent found 1 case study where a screw so long was used in patients dating back to 70s even.

    After my total knee replacement. My doctor told me I could shower. He said take off dressing and just let water run over it ,don't knot scrub. Pat dry .and he said do not cover it. He found it heels faster. And staples can come out sooner. And that was true for me. He also said that not all doctors recommend this, but he found it works great for his patients.

    • @TalkingWithDocs

    My story from 9 years ago. They put such a thick Ace over bandage that even my cryo cuff was not getting my knee cold for the post-surgery icing. I called them the day that I got home and I told them and they said under no circumstances was I allowed to take that ace bandage off. My guess is that they were dummy proofing me in case I was an idiot who didn't know how to be clean. No offense to anyone reading this, but a lot of people aren't truly thoughtful when understanding cross-contamination and so I get them trying to cover their a * *. However, I never experienced any post-surgery icing. My injury was hot for 5 days. Going back knowing now after having an exceedingly ridiculously long recovery time that should have been weeks was almost 2 years, I would have taken that ace bandage off. Mind you I am extremely attentive to detail and in this is no way advice to you to go against your surgeon. I don't get infections because I don't infect. If you can100% say the same, then trust your instincts. Or at the very least, beg your doctor MORE than 3 times to do something when you can't even get any coldness through the thick bandage.

    Due to COVID 19 in the States they are doing outpatient surgery, what do you think about that?

      Hi rickt1951. Great question. There has always been a push to get people as soon as it is safe so we do feel like it is a good idea for the right procedure and the right patient.
