These were great tips.I have a question,if you have experience in emergency medicine back home and are applying in family medicine, how you can justify your commitment and real interest towards FM in an interview .
Dr Cyam, what is the strategy if you want to apply to a program that has both internal medicine and family practice. Will they be suspicious why you are pursuing both tracks? How do you apply to both? Do you prepare different personal statements? Lets say you want to pursue nephrology, wont they ask why are you applying for family practice? The reason I ask this, is that my first choice is to be local where I live, since I'm married and therefore want to apply to both IM and family practice to give me the better chance of getting accepted. thanks for your time.
Great question. Although IM & FM have may similarities they have many differences. So I think it is most important to address each specialty independently. Which may mean different personal statements as well as reference letters. It will be a great personal touch for both specialties to know your personal ties to the area as well. I hope that helps!
Hi, I was wondering about interviews, especially psychiatry interviews. If a person has elective surgery after the 20th December and is not able to attend interviews after the surgery if called for one, can an applicant request for a skype/telephone interview? If not can the applicant email the Residency co-ordinator in advance that they will be unable to attend interviews after a certain date due to medical reasons?
Hello Jamie. This is a very unique situation. It would be best to contact the residency coordinator and ask an open ended question to see what your options are. You can perhaps request an interview later in the season or before surgery. All the best with your surgery!

I’m a p2 soon to be a p3, I recently changed my mind and want to do residency. I wasn’t involved in any clubs and didn’t network properly. Is it too late to think about residency since I’m in a 3 year program? What advice do you have for me, i want to apply for residencies and I’m kinda clueless.
