RUSKIN BOND
* Popular Anglo-Indian author born in Kasauli, HP in May 1934 to British parents. Completed his education at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla before heading to London and showing promise as a young writer.* Soon returned from England to Dehradun, where he has been writing and living with his adopted family ever since.
* Has won numerous awards such as Sahitya Academy and Padma Shree.
* Several of his novels like 'The Flight of the Pigeons', 'The Blue Umbrella' and 'Susanna's Seven Husbands' have been made into Hindi films.
SIMPLY LIVING
The present extracts have been taken from the anthology 'The India I Love'
* In the preface to this anthology, Bond wrote: "The India that I love does not make the headlines. The India that I love comprises the good will and good humour of ordinary people; a tolerance for all customs; a non-interference in others' private lives; a friendly reciprocation at all times; a philosophical acceptance of hardships; love and affection, especially in children."
* They comprise of his diary entries through the 1980s as a young struggling writer.
* They provide glimpses from Bond's ordinary and unpretentious life in the mountains of Uttarakhand, and show his love for nature and life, captured through his natural wisdom and keen sense of humour and wit.
