I’ve watched it many, many times and I still laugh at Dorothy’s responses. Most of today’s generation wouldn’t get the PLO reference though. For those of us that remember that organization, it’s totally hilarious!
My nephew and I had our Golden Girls routine; every Saturday, he would come over with some 'herb', I'd fix fried shrimp; we'd go out to the backyard, smoke a joke, serve up the fried shrimp and turn on the Golden Girls! We had the routine down like clock work! We laughed until our eyes ran with tears! when my nephew passed, the routine ended but the Golden Girls were still there to make me laugh, deep, heartfelt laughter even though I know all the lines and when they're co!ming, the show STILL never fails to make me laugh to this day! Some of the best comedy writing right up there with Cheers and Frasier, my other two favorites, but the Golden Girls was at the top of the list these ladies, these monumentally talented actresses were like a well oiled machine! When Bea left the show, it was not the same but I continued to watch it even when they tried the new format of running a hotel! it just wasn't the same without Bea Arthur! I watch the reruns just about every night and as I said, I know the scripts as if I had delivered the lines and they still make me smile and laugh! This particular episode was the highlight for 'Dorothy'; one of Bea's premiere performances of the series! And Please let us not forget the super talented writers who provided the grist of the show! They knew these characters inside and out and for seven years they ravaged America's funny bone and the world's as well! The combination of talented writers and talented actresses who delivered their lines with such truth and honesty you couldn't help but laugh! Today I suffer from SCFB syndrome; I can be on the subway or anywhere for that matter and an episode will pop into my head like a video tape and I have to seriously work to suppress the laughter rolling in my gut! Like the rest of you, I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH!!! If laughter is good medicine, then this show was the best medicine on the market back then and today!! Can't stop writing without mentioning that iconic theme song, Thank You For Being A Friend; can't tell you how many times I've written that sentence in cards to my friends over the years and meant every heartfelt word! Thank you Dorothy-Bea, Rose-Betty, Blanche-Rue and Sofia-Estelle, all the writers, directors and guest actors; your show has added years of joy to my life...then and now!!!
Well they are showing the whole series again on Network TV here in the UK and I'm noticing that several of Sophia's lines are being cut. today (S2 E22) it was her reference to Prince being "that little black guy", as well as an entire sequence about a cross-dressing musical act. I'm not saying it's bad, but it is interesting to see how times have changed.
