After visiting the Louvre and seeing all the masterpieces in real life, its still Segantini's Evil Mothers that lingers. Im looking forward to part two of your introduction!

'Lingers' is a nice way to explain the intention of some of these Symbolist works. And Segantini has a lot of those kind of works which he painted somewhat 'out of focus' on purpose.

Did the kiss painting inspire the silent movie with the same name.

I have never heard of a direct relationship, but there are many paintings and sculptures entitled The Kiss, so maybe there was some indirect connection..

Thank you for creating this. There are a lot of paintings that I had never seen before. It seems to me that the movements were somewhat independently developed in different countries. Is that right?

Good question, and there are certainly groups who developed Symbolism in relative isolation (like the Vienna Secession with Klimt, or Munch, or the Polish artists). However, they were all inspired to some extent by the early Symbolist works and literature in France (which was still the center of the global art world).

I don't think everything is meant to be interpreted. Sometimes a piece of art is just unusual for the sake of experimenting. See how far into a strange idea you can get without it being false, empty, chaotic, or nonsensical. Where it's still communication. World is constantly changing so same as genes need to mutate to evolve, artists research mutation of design, style, and effect to try to push boundaries of visual language. The symbolism Kiss painting seems more about that. It's saying think outside the box because a new world is coming.
