  • At Smart Cities Accelerate 2020, the keynote featured a conversation between Qualcomm President and CEO-elect Cristiano Amon and SVP and Verizon Chief Product Officer Aamir Hussain, moderated by Qualcomm SVP & GM of IoT Jeff Lorbeck. The group discussed the impact of 5G connectivity on Smart Cities and smart connected spaces.
We’re at the beginning of the use cases for 5G in the context of smart cities and smart connected spaces. Many have yet to be invented, but what we’re seeing now is really powerful. Cristiano Amon delves into the ways 5G technology can improve the efficiency of first responders. A pilot program in the U.K., for example, is helping medics aboard 5G-connected ambulances do high-definition exams that can be sent to doctors at awaiting hospitals. This allows diagnoses to happen faster and treatment to begin sooner.
5G is also helping shape a new era of smart transportation. By combining 5G with Qualcomm’s C-V2X technologies, we’re connecting vehicles to everything - other cars, infrastructure, and even people. That means enhanced communication, better driver awareness, and ultimately, improved automotive safety. Smart traffic use cases are happening today, and eventually, will pave the way for autonomous driving.
The group also discusses obstacles to building out smart cities - legal, regulatory, etc., but all championed the benefits. Planning boards need to incentivize the broad deployment of 5G outdoors and indoors. They need to treat it as critical - just as they do electricity. The result: improved critical services for citizens and more efficient and successful city operations.
