To all those saying Yugi is not Atem, you're right and wrong
Ditto for those saying he is Atem.
Yugi is Atem, and at the same time, he isn't. Ancient Egyptians believed there were several parts to the soul, and only the Ka (the personality) goes to the afterlife. Atem sealed his Ka into the puzzle, but it stands to reason the rest of his soul moved on, eventually being reborn into Yugi, who without the original Ka of Atem, would have his own, new, distinct personality. This explains why Atem and Yugi are so different, despite effectively being the same.
Pretty sure it's the person BA that goes to the afterlife. The BA is the persons part of the soul which contains the personality, but since Atem's soul, or at least the BA part of it was sealed into the puzzle, Yugi didn't inherit Atem's BA and which would explain how he has his own distinct personality.
This also applies to Inuyasha how Kikyo soul was reincarnated as the modern-day girl, Kagome; but the difference is basically what you said in simpler terms. Basically, one part of the original soul is "split" where one is reborn and the other stays with the former. Its practically an incomplete reincarnation when it comes to Yu-Gi-Oh and Inuyasha.

Yugi is Atem's physical reincarnation only, not a full reincarnation, because if Atem's spirit hadn't been trapped within the millennium puzzle, he soul would most likely would have been reborn in Yugi's body, much like Kaiba. That's why Kaiba has memories of his previous life as Priest Seto, because he died and his spirit was reborn as Kaiba. That's why Ishizu clearly states that Kaiba and YUGI have battled in the past, because Yugi is Atem's physical modern-day version.

The answer is yes, because Seto Kiaba never had those 5,000 old memories, why the fuck else would he keep denying that he lived in another life in the past, even after he saw his other self IN PERSON IN SEASON 5? As I said in my comment of actual facts, I said that it was all just a coincidence that Atem just happens to look Identical to Yugi, and Atem actually did completely seal his own soul inside of the puzzle, because it makes absolutely 0 sence that you can half of your soul inside of the Millennium Puzzle, because how can you leave half of your own soul inside of an object? That's exactly like saying that you split your own soul into 2 halves of your own body immage, your upper body immage that shows your head all the way down to your stomach, and your lower body immage that shows your butt, or the groin area, (depending if you are seeing the back, or the front of the body) all the way down to your feet, witch means means that both of you Simple minded Fucken Idiots have your information completely wrong, plus none of it makes any sence at all, whether it's from reality, or a cartoon, whitch means that what you said never made any sence to begin with.

People have no problem believing Kaiba, Bakura, etc. are reincarnations, but when it comes to Yugi, the most obvious even if you don't pay attention, there's a problem believing it. LOL
bakura's in the same boat as yugi.. the soul in the ring was both zorc and bakura's (thief king) but he kept his memory.. kaiba (Egyptian) lived in Egypt and ruled and his descendant kaiba didn't know about that side and preferably doesn't want to know... this does seem plausible and don't forget there is a new yugioh film coming out
David Bowerman Plus, Sugoroku(Yugi's grandpa) and Ishizu. Takahashi already said last year that he designed Yugi's eyes to be more like Atem in the movie(manga canon). If they had no connection, he wouldn't have tried to make them look alike. lol

I've thought of that theory too. But i actually also thought up that when Atem leaves to the after life is when his soul actually merges with Yuugi since they are other halves of each other's soul. I believe the merging won't be noticeable though, it's not like Yuugi and Atem can mind talk and whatever anymore. It'll be more of Yuugi gaining the Phararoh's power.
And it makes sense. Just think: how else was Yuugi in the future (during GX) able to send Juudai (jaden) back in time to fight his younger self during the time period that he still had the millenium puzzle? I doubt regular Yuugi could do that on his own without some form of power.
Not to mention, Yugi also had Jaden's power to see Duel Monster Spirits. He wouldn't get that power on his own, unless Atem gave it to him. After all, Jaden himself got that power from being a reincarnation of an ancient king.

Honestly, I always thought that Bakura and Yugi were reincarnations of Akefa and Atem. In DSOD when Ryou's dad puts on the Millennium Ring, it rejects him. But when Ryou holds it, it fuses with him because he is Akefa's reincarnation. If anyone but Yugi were to solve the Millennium puzzle, it would reject them and split into pieces again. That's just my theory, anyhow.

The millennium puzzle has independent will/ the will of Atem in it so it only seems natural that it would gravitate towards Yugis bloodline and the puzzle is probably unsolvable to anyone but Yugi because it’s Soul bonded to Atems physical and Mental body. I assume it would be the same for the other puzzles too

|I do agree with the idea that Atem sealed a portion of himself within the puzzle, his pride and power. Therebye his more gentler side was later reincarnated. The same can be seen for Bakura, his darker spirit however was magnified by Zorc's presence within the Milennium Ring.

This sounds like the dark magician to Mahad and dark magician girl to Mana. That's why when Atem passes on, they're waiting for him in the afterlife.
I do like your theory but it doesn't fit with the religion consistently followed during the Manga series. The ba, ka, physical body and other two parts of soul couldn't be Yugi either. Reincarnation usually tranfers a soul into an animal of some sort so yugi's physical likeness to the Pharoah wouldn't be from that. Yugi and Atem share a few likenesses but these are probably not from a split soul, as you implied.
I'm probably over analyzing or something but I think the author consistently follows the Egyptian mythology during the series (I'll admit with Kul Elna it appears a bit closer to poltergeist stories with trapped spirits). Sorry my writing is sort of everywhere and not all the ideas connect well. I hope everything is answered in the movie, Takahashi mentioned answering questions that were common among fans. It would be great if this one is answered as well
+BigYaoiMan YaoiHands If Kaiba, Ishizu, Sugoroku, and nice Bakura can be reincarnations, why can't Yugi be one too? Yugioh isn't always consistent with Egyptian religion, so there's some lenience allowed. The fact that both Atem and Thief King Bakura's sealed souls would find their way to people who look identical to their old selves has to mean something. Also, if Yugi isn't a reincarnation of at least half of Atem's soul, then the stone slab at the museum is a confusing red herring. If Yugi never solved the Puzzle and never unleashed Dark Yugi, and saw the stone slab by himself, the natural conclusion to draw from a viewer's perspective is that Yugi is a reincarnation.
+BigYaoiMan YaoiHands Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia noted that Atem was Yugi's past incarnation, so there's nothing else to say, except that you mustn't mistaking Reincarnations as the same being, cuz they're not. Seto Kaiba and Priest Seto are not the same being, Kaiba isn't Priest Seto who revived after 3000 years, they both had their own parents who give them life, it is possible however that they're from the same family tough. Atem often called Yami Yugi isn't another Yugi neither the pharao's reincarnation, he IS the soul of the dead pharaoh, scelled in the Millenium Puzzle, hope you understood.
+Begyn Anthony Yeah, I think I get it. Sorry, I was a bit confused. In the manga, they say that Atem needs to go to the afterlife and it shows him with his father and some characters that I thought were supposed to have been reincarnated, so I wasn't sure if he gets to talk to any of them or if he just gets reincarnated at the end. Also, I had wanted there to be more of a chance of Atem showing up in the 2016 movie. Just wishful thinking. heh heh. sorry for the fuss...
+BigYaoiMan YaoiHands In your defense, I agree to you. There are some inconsistences that makes anyone go nuts about the religion. Also, I noticied that this series in particular didn't started as a Card Games related product, but as a Ghost Story, and a really good one BTW. So many things were changed while Takashi was still publishing it. Thereby, it was never meant to be a plot fully plained on his head, with introdution - development - climax - conclusion all already set up since the starting. Thinking it more as a "Soap Opera" kinda stuff, changing itself accordly to the readers/audience reaction, and to what is either popular or more profitible at the time.
I think Yugi being a descendant to Atem would make more sense but also splitting half of Atem's soul so the point of Yugi growth becoming more like one whole while Atem begins to learn what kindness was. It does make more sense now.

I can see that happening. I mean, it does sound confusing, but when you think about it, it doesn't really. In season 0, they're different people altogether, but throughout the series, they learn from each other, so I can see how Yugi is Atem's reincarnation.

I'm not so sure about the half soul theory. Wouldn't that mean that Zorc only had half his soul locked too, and was reborn as normal Bakura? How could the pharaoh go to the after life where Seto, Isis, and the other Egyptian counterparts lived if their reincarnations still existed on Earth? Wouldn't the souls be affixed to the reincarnations? It raises more questions than it solves.
+ShadowStar1224 Bakura is Thief king Bakura reincarnation. Yami bakura is Bakura+soul in the millennium ring/Zorc.
Zorc was indeed to powerful to contain. Shadi implied that four out of seven Millennium Items had parts of Zorc inside them.
from what i saw in the show i thought that when the atem lost to yugi an went into the after life he then reincarnted into yugi an thus compleateing the circle .. his past self was in the puzzle an it was important for him to be beaten by his future self

I still think that. and as for bakura I feel the same way. we just don't know when past thief bakura goes to reincarnated. but this theory also makes sense as bakura was in a similar situation to yugi. it's possible that only part of bakura's soul reincarnated. I mean we know the millennium items can only take part of a soul. seto kaiba had that happen to him. yami banished only kaiba's dark half. That's why Pegasus was able to have a kaiba look alike. that much a confirmed. that was kaiba's darker half that yami banished

Another thing is that in the manga, there's a flashback of Atem saving Sugoroku's life back when he got the puzzle from the Pharaoh's tomb. If all of Atem is within the puzzle and has been all forgotten, then who saved him? So it makes sense that the Pharaoh split his soul when he sealed himself in the puzzle and part of it got reborn into Yugi.
I kinda believe this theory because long after they realize they're separate people, Yugi and Atem still call each other "The Other Me".

I do think Yugi Muto is the recarnation of Atem, another clue is that Anzu Tea that Yugi has a crush on, looks familiarly like Atem's girl crush and that Atem also liked her without remembering his past.

Someone mentioned this in a TH-cam comment, but the only time Atem showed feelings for Tea was in season 0, and that was when he believed he WAS Yugi, as opposed to a 3000-year old pharaoh.

OMG, I totally agree with this. I've always thought that Yugi was the reincarnation of Atem's good/kind half. It's so clear that Yugi and Atem are one and the same; well, not really. I mean Yugi was born into the living world so it make sense that he would be his own person. But overall I totally agree with you.
I too agere with you except for that point that they became their own person. I strongly belive that when Yuugi one day is going to die, the two havfs will reunite and become one hole soul again and Atemu will wait for him in the afterlife untill that time comes.

I really do believe Yugi is Atem's reincarnation but, reincarnation is a tricky and complicated subject in Yu-Gi-Oh! specifically. I don't think it's impossible for Atem's soul to have reincarnated while also being trapped in the Pendant/Puzzle. I remember a few lines in the sub where they mentioned him having died even though he technically never has, he just sealed his soul away to keep Zorc at bay. It could be something similar to Jaden and The Supreme King where only specific circumstances awaken the "other" soul side/Incarnation/person of the soul or Arc-V with the 4 dimensional counterparts (Yuya, Yuri, Yugo, Yuto) are their own distinct person while also still being/part of/parts of Zarc. It's a very interesting topic and I hope we get more information on it and the process.

I'm going to thank you for this. Because I've always believed that Yugi was Atem's reincarnation from the start. However, when I try to explain this, the people I explain it to have no idea what I'm saying. don't forget that Seto Caiba WAS reincarnated from his pharaoh soul. That was actually solidified several times that Seto was a reincarnation. So that might be something He and Yugi have in common lol

I interpreted it as, Yugi is the body and heart. Atem the soul. As Yugi is alive and has a very kind and compasionate heart while Atem typically enforces Yugi's will (not necessarily his own). Yes, at first he was killing people because that was Atem's will but he stopped because it was YUGI's will. I think this is most obvious when Kaiba was going suicidal to save Mokuba. Atem would have killed him, but Yugi said no. This also explains why he came back in Dark Side of Dimensions. Yugi willed it, Atem followed through. Kaiba figured it was based on Yugi's will and made that gamble. Atem is Yugi's soul. It was the puzzle that allowed the heart and soul to talk.

My theory for their similar appearance was because Yugi was both a descendent (in body) of Atem's as well as his reincarnation (his soul), and possible the same for Kaiba, Ishizu and maybe Bakura. My theory for Yugi's grandpa is that he is a descendant of Atem's (his hair for one) but is the reincarnation of Shimon (his soul). This most likely isn't true but I'm sticking with it.

That moment when you realize you just lost your time watching a vídeo that tells you something you already know about the series, 'cause the series already explained it. Second point: are you really trying to fit the Season Zero subplot into the mainstream series? That's just unfair, the series was pratically discontinued to change into a Card-games related series for comercial reasons. All characters were rebooted, and even in the manga there's no such a explanation for "wtf why did that happen". It just happened, you accept it and move on.

No, they did. Kazuki Takahashi himself did say that during most of the interviews. And again, as I said to BigYaoiMan YaoiHands that series started as a Ghost Story, not as a Card Games related product. It suffered of the "Soap Opera" effect, when the writers (Takahashi in case) are forced to change the plot according to the audience.

Well I Think....According to the Egyptian theory, the soul consists of five shares Ren (name) Sheut (shadow) Ka (vital body / force presence that can not be confused with meat, despite the ka require a physical support) Ba (personality soul) and Akh (unification of Ka and Ba, the person who had joined the gods)
Sometimes Ka can be more life force, that which separates a living thing a dead thing. If Atem to drop dead in the first fight against Zogh would have held his Ba (aspect of personality, the Egyptian concept of itself, that made him a unique individual) in the Millennium Puzzle, leaving his Ka (life force, bodily presence) to die, then ka going to reincarnate to exist alone. The ka was often represented in Egyptian iconography as a second image of the individual, the pioneering work tried to translate ka as duble., when Yugi solves the puzzle and Ka Ba unite again.
But Yugi is not only a physical aspect, he has a ba / personality. But Atem has Ka himself, his Ka is Yugi, Yugi is responsible for Atem have physical sensations in some episodes Yugi asks Atem if he is tired of the duel. As a spirit may be tired? So what that says the identity of each? Simple.
ATEM IS AN ASPECT. He is but the Egyptian personification of Yugi. Before his arrest in Enigma Atem was a complete being, single, but then he dies and becomes a part of Yugi, a different personification of itself. It is like Sadman Morpheus and Daniel has nothing to do with each other, but both are dream! (Morpheus is the aspect dream as night reverie, and Daniel is the aspect dream goal,).
One argument used to them being different people is that they are different. But who says that's excuse? In doctor who have eleven incarnations, eleven personalities, ways of being, thinking, acting and feeling COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, but they are all the same person is not?
And more. Atem has no memories of his past right? he does not know Anzu, however in the season when zero will save Anzu in the cafeteria Atem says this phrase: "Those who mistreat my precious Anzu, will suffer ..."
How is this possible?, Atem call precious Anzu until that moment he had no experience with it ...? Simple, the only one who knows Anzu long enough to like her and call her precious is Yugi. And he does not say "precious friend of Yugi" he says, MY ... And Atem is an Egyptian spirit of 3000 years old, but knows perfectly how to behave as Japanese, knows what Yugi is, studies, plays with friends and the modern world does not seem strange to Atem, then his relationship with Yugi is not limited to access memories, he assimilates the Yugi experiences as if he had lived the.
In ep 74 the Japanese version he says that phrase.

Yugi Atem calls all the time "Mou Hitori in Boku" = My other self. And no wonder he calls Atem that way. As I explained in the cafeteria, Atem is not limited to accessing the memories of Yugi, his behavior (being Japanese, meet friends, enjoy Tea / Anzu) indicates that the Atem assimilates as if he had lived the. And lived! After all he is a personification of Yugi.Pelo very fact that Atem is only one aspect, it has to necessarily go away, as her soul (total with five parts) reincarnated in Yugi Moto. As Ichizu said in the Japanese version "the soul of the pharaoh was resurrected." Full soul of Atem, broke and just left the Ba, the aspect of personality. Then left her to die and reincarnate Ka. Short answer: Not directly. Yugi is the reincarnation of Henry Tudor, who is the reincarnation of Atem. Next question: Is Atem the reincarnation of Atum-Ra the Sun God? And is Seto the reincarnation of Sutekh (a.k.a. Set, Seto, Seth) the God of Deserts, Disorder, Violence and Foreigners? If so, Atem would have several Ka monsters (many are based on merges with other gods, and Atum-Ra is in fact a Ra-based composite deity): Winged Dragon of Ra (dragon form), Ra-Khepri (scarab beetle/morning form), Ra-Horakhty (falcon/sunrise form), Khnum (ram/evening form), Winged Sky Dragon Ra-Osiris (alternative dragon/night-time dragon form (Ra and Osiris were believed to merge into a single entity at night)) and Amun-Ra (lion/wind form).

They basely are the same person reincarnated means being born in a new body(( example: if I die and born in a new body I'm still the same person)) ( half of atem spirit was born in Yugi) and the other have trapped in the puzzle but yugi Is a descent of atem and the reason they look so much alike and the other characters because time is repeating itself till they fix it

To be honest I feel like reincarnation is a possibility. Though I feel like Yugi could be Atem's descendent. Them looking alike could just be that Atem's genetics were passed down over generations. Like let's thing about that Atem was around 16, taken from the wiki, when he became Pharaoh. Who knows if that was the actual age. He could have been older too. Though if he was just 16 who knows how strict they were about having a child underaged. Atem could have had a child and he just didn't remember at the time while reliving his memories. At one point he even said himself that he had to go back since this was the last bit of his memory that he remembered. He could have had a child secretly. Atem's bloodline could have descendent down to Yugi. Who maybe has about 25% Egyptian blood and maybe being 75% Japanese, which is hard to tell since we never saw his father. Most notable is that he has the thicker eye lines which seemed to be common for the Egyptians in Yu-Gi-Oh, which made clear that he at least has Egyptian blood.
Well take a look at Arc V you got Zarc who's soul was split into 4 pieces and then reincarnated into 4 seperate dimensions

They have the same freaking hair and Yugi eventually grows into the same body shape as the Pharaoh when older. Heck Dark Side of Dimensions has stressed this further by giving Yugi Muto's eyes a bit of slant at the top, being the middle ground between Yugi's original design and Atem's eyes

These Theory kind of makes some sense because to the Ancient Egyptians, their soul, their being, were made up of many different parts. Not only was there the physical form, but there were eight immortal or semi-divine parts that survived death, with the body making nine parts of a human.
If your theory is correct that Yugi is actually one reincarnated part of the Pharaoh it kind of makes sense in the Egyptian Concept. Tough reincarnation... I really need to find a source that support this.

This is not a fan theory, it's said in the series. The problem is: it shocks religions. What kind of believe IS said to be the true in this reality. Is this Egyptian religion? Buddhism? Shinto? Tao? There are confliting beliefs: Egyptians in the past believed the soul and the body were inseparable, even after death, and that's why they mummified their bodies. However, in the East in other hand, the body is a temporary shell, and that's why they cinder their deads. In this show, both beliefs are said to be true, what doesn't make any since.

I have an answer: If we fallow the rules of the Mummy movies, then Yugi is Atem's body reincarnation. Sort of like in the Mummy Returns where Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell is the reincarnation of Princess Nefertiri, Meela Nais of Anck-Su-Namun, and Ardeth Bay as yes/no of the old king. Kind a get it?

But I don't agree with the soul mitosis. I think atem did merge with yuugi when he crossed. I think in the afterlife there are only imprinted memories left behind, hence why priest seto is there while Seto is alive, same with priestess isis and isis ishtar

I think you are right to yugi is part of Atem Reincarnation, the payments very similar. I have even thought much about whether yugi is a Reincarnation of Atem and I have become more convinced that it is right. but what about Seto? he is also a Reincarnation of priest Seto from ancient Egypt? One thing is sure priest Seto is the cousin of Atem thanks to their father, then we can not really call him a priest but as a prince of Egypt
