I would really love to find a way using the Montessori material to present why 2 to the power of 0 is 1.

She referred to the first piece as "a" unit. Instead of "a" you could say "one" unit, then when you have 2 units (or as she says a "second" unit") you have 2^1. This implies that one unit is 2^0
