Seriously, many people are missing the point of this video. Dave Grohl's message is not hard to understand - play with passion, play with attitude, and do it because you love it. Whether you think his point is too 'naive' or not, he is to an extent not wrong - just go out and do it.

I've been a musician for all my life. Toured. Japan. Seven albums.....and this is exactly exactly right. Get into the mentality that "you already made it" just cause you worked hard on your music and executed with all your passion. Everything else is a by product of practicing hard and love.

I'm pretty sure Dave's advice here isn't about getting lots of recognition and making lots of money. It's putting into perspective the meaning of success, which to him is the instant gratification of performing in front of real people who think you're the shit. If you're looking at this thinking "But that's not how the modern music industry works!" then you're totally missing the point.

@@dude4173 Yeah I slightly regret this comment. I think at the time I had noticed that some interviewers didn't really listen to what their guest was saying and had a tendency to reel off a list of pre-written questions and casually agree with everything being said rather than taking an actively curiosity. I would say that I DO see interviewers who just just smile and nod and make me think "you're not actually listening are you?", but I would agree with you, it isn't always the case, and I think I worded the original comment quite aggressively.
So nodding your head to agree with someone's point is somehow bad? What shitty cynical way to view harmless body language.

Everyone saying that this doesn't apply unless it was still the 90's, you're wrong. The only thing that's changed is that the industry has a tighter hold on whose allowed to make a ton of money on selling songs. Fortunately, there are still TONS of bands out there that follow in his footsteps. Just go out to live shows of bands you hear touring ALL the time. They don't have lots of recorded music, they don't sell a bunch of t-shirts, but when they come to town, they're sure as hell gonna sell the place out. Bands like Cage the Elephant, Streetlight Manifesto, the Dirty Heads, just to name a few, (and these are all still relatively mainstream) are all totally successful in their own right. They may not be on every radio station, they may not top anything by Billboards, but they have insanely loyal fan bases who will stop at nothing to keep the bands alive off their ticket sales so they can KEEP touring and KEEP playing music which is what it's all really about. ***** Hahahahahaha, the Dirty Heads all lived on their own when they started and I have no idea about the drummers and whatnot but the two frontman grew up poor as all hell. Do some research before you go attacking random bands because you're too cynical to actually go out and play some music yourself. They committed to their music, and they made it. Backgrounds don't matter. Kurt Cobain was a rich snob as a kid.
Secondly, guitars, not expensive. I have 3 guitars, 2 acoustic, 1 electric. A Squire Strat is all you need, and all 3 only cost a total of $400 which I paid for myself. I got a free 40W amp for free, and a free Casio keyboard with weighted keys. You just need to be dedicated enough not to cry when guitar center tries to gip you and do some real research, hell I got an Epiphone bass for $90 because the kid didn't know you could fix a tuning peg! Music is for rich LAZY kids, but if you're poor and dedicated, you'll be fine. Quit raining on people's parades.
Not wrong. Unless you have an audience that still swears to buying cd's, you do NOT make serious money on streaming. You need to stream 2BILLION streams + to get Spotify to pay $5 million, and of course, for most, there are many expenses that needs to be taken out before getting starry eyed. Unless you are Drake or Ed Sheeran, you're pretty screwed, so then you are left with live performances and merch. (again, older people listening to rock, or country probably buy cd's but if you try to appeal to younger people, it's all about streaming).

This is the attitude of a true artist - you don’t do something because you wanna be famous or adored, you do something for the love of it. You put in the effort and time in, give it your all and always enjoy what you’re doing. Success will follow and if you’re loving what you’re doing anyway, you’re already winning!
Best advice for aspiring musican ever. Forget about the rest of the crap, just do that. The top bands probably focused on that first and foremost, not about what do I wear, royalties, videos, marketing...Truly inspiring.

if someone else had said that you may have had a valid point. But I was part of the same underground scene as Grohl came from and I can assure you that he payed his dues for years touring with bands that didn't make money. first with Scream and then Nirvana. back in those days plenty of now legendary bands would literally have to sell their blood at blood banks to get gas money to get to the next gig. they lived on ramen and blocks of cheese from food banks and when they got back from tour they were homeless because they couldn't afford to rent their apartments or rooms while they were on tour. bands like Black Flag and DRI all had to do that. but they lived that kind of life because they loved the music. and Grohl was one of them.
Dude is right. Example: I had never really heard Parkway Drive before I saw them at Sonic Temple and couple years ago. Their set BLEW ME AWAY. Now I have lots of merch, can't wait to travel four hours one way to see them again and listen to their music eveey day.... All because they played with love and passion. It was amazing.

There are so many really good musicians, and only a handful will ever make it big, even briefly. But when you’re watching someone perform live, and they’ve got that glow of loving what they do, you know that money isn’t what it’s about. But I still try to support them generously so they can at least be comfortable and do more of what they do, because that benefits the whole society.
People only make it big if they want to. Some people just either don’t want to or don’t want it badly enough.
I wonder if a "badass" band would even make it these days. Maybe in metal, country, or jazz music. But not in pop.

if any of you actually know anything about the live event industry, its actually doing pretty well right now. Because artists are being hurt by piracy and illegal downloading, they have to revert to other sources in order to make money. One of them is through live events.
recently I went to a Cover night at my school, and the first act was terrible. It wasnt because they dont love music, or that they are untalented, it was just boring and completely unforgettable. They did nothing unique or different, and it was a waste of my time. The second act though, i mean WOW, it was dope! You could just feel the energy of the band. They took risks, and looked good doing it. Immediately after they played, I wanted to look them up and check out their music.
My point is, ANY of us after hearing an "opening" or "smaller" band that played an awesome show, would want to do the same thing. When you look at tours like Warped Tour, a lot of the bands that now headline them got big because of Warped Tour.
Enough of this worthless philosophizing. LEARN TO SIGHT READ. You'll never be out of work, and you'll have the financial and technical foundation to go out and do what you want, without having to work at Wendy's.
Dave made some really good points here.. Too many bands that I've seen don't have the energy/driving sound in there music .To get to be a bad ass (doesn't mean groupies,drugs,drinking) you have to play as hard as you can with an attitude and you have to play it really well..... So many want to play but just playing the notes without putting any extra effort into it isn't going to make you stand out amongst the rest. Guaranteed..You still will be mediocre sounding like everybody else...Figure out why some stand out more than others do or ones that did but still is remembered......Dave stands out and continues to do so in the rock world no doubt....When he says he beats the fuck out of his drums, thats what you are to do to become a bad ass and it puts so much more into the music as well as the performance.If your going to play rock good and loud than don't play it like a choir boy. would...I use to tell the bands that I represented, "don't play like your happy, play it like your really pissed off at something and than enjoy the response."..the drive, sound and performance improved and many said it felt really good to let it all go without a care..Can't stand musicians who just play the notes without any effort being put into it. Give the notes and music some attitude and play it hard as you can. Your musicianship as well as performance will improve and learn as much as you can about the instrument you choose....There are too many rock bands out there but only a few will stand out and become successful...Dave gave some really good insight into this.Cheers!

No need to be so mean to each other. There are truths to both sides. What Grohl says is true in that the "industry" is currently doing nothing for the musicians (i.e. the guys who write the songs and play the instruments) so you'd do good to focus on making the best music you can within your means, cause you can't control anything else anyway. But it is also a reality that there's a lot of really kickass unknown musicians from every kind of genre that have day jobs (I know a lot of those) SO it is also true that it is quite the long shot for a musician today to translate a lot of gigging into eventually making a living from music (see that I said "making a living" and not "becoming rich and famous"). Although, I don't think that Dave was implying otherwise in this clip, I'll have to watch the whole interview...
I love the respect Dave has for Kurt/Nirvana in saying he wouldn't be where he is if it weren't for Nirvana. But I'd like to say, Dave you are good in your own right, I think you would be where you are if it had only been Foo Fighters from the beginning. Daves love for music is runs deeper then a crack whores vagina on a busy night. Thanks for everything you have blessed us with Dave Grohl.

True. A lot of the comments here are stupid ass opinions destined to start a war.
That's just it though. There are a lot of excellent musicians that never really have much success. Dave seems practical enough to realize (and admit) that he got opportunities he otherwise wouldn't have had by being in the right place and the right time. That doesn't mean he didn't maximize those opportunities through hard work and skill.
If Paul McCartney calls you to hangout and jam you’ve definitely reached the highest levels of badass.
The problem is with the way the industry is going the idea of 4 guys playing together in a band is becoming less and less common. So even if you have a great musician somewhere in the world unless he's extremely lucky and has other talented musicians in his local area the possibility of him being in a successful band with local guys isn't all that likely. I guess what i'm saying is that luck plays a massive part. This is also why you have this generation of lost musicians resorting to TH-cam as a way of trying to get themselves out their because they don't have the people around them to do it where they are based.
I think what he's saying is this: The most important thing in life is to be authentic & truthful and you will find passion and love to create and people will come to you. Yes there are practical issues to deal with and setbacks that you may or may not overcome - there's no guarantee bad things won't happen. But in principle, being the real you is what gets you to where you can best get to. That's why people used to talk all the time about 'keeping it real', especially in music.
I achieved that last August...played live in a rock band in a club in NYC for the first time in front of about 30 people...was awesome feeling!!! So much doing it we did another gig last November. Live your dream!!!
beautiful and excellent advice Dave, he's dead on, my band plays a ton of 90's rock and the area I live in adheres to that rock sound quite well, im not a pro but a solid intermediate drummer and being able to smash off covers and get recognition from people after shows telling me how tight and awesome our band sounded is all I need to fulfill my soul, im a realist.. heck its a cover band but along side the rest of my life its a perfect additive, during and after the shows Steven you don't hit on groupies, groupies flock over to talk to you, that's what happens when you deliver a solid performance doing something you love and have passion in that, the people greatly appreciate a good live band these days cause there is a ton of butcher bands out there

As a aspirering guitarist (who sucks) i absolutely love what he said because i dont post my crappy playing and say "hey come see us live" no i just go out and play with my buddys and have a good time so what if everyone there ignores us or hates it because for that time on stage i feel like im free and nothing can bring me down

Don't get me wrong, I respect Dave to the fullest. But he owes his career to labels and A&R people. Back when Nirvana made their break they didn't have to deal with how the music industry is now with the internet and everything. But I do agree, if you kill it live and people see you, you'll do great.
What Dave is saying is not WORRY about the rewards (labels, A&R people etc) that come after being discovered.You just need to know that you are great enough to go forward. He never denied Nirvana not ever having those things.
The most comments show the big misunderstanding. Dave talks about passion of Music. The feeling of creating something and seeing the response in the Croud. Even if its just a Hand full of people. Don't confound that with financial success. Wanna make more and more Money? Wanna make more and more kids were your face on a shirt? Go play bei the BigBiz-Rules. Be a Product.
Dave Grohl is a great musician and awesome guy, but his advice is only part of the equation. You can play great live shows for years, but when it comes to the industry today, which is completely different than Dave's experience, if you don't have a method for connecting with fans after shows and a business model in place that actually sells music then you're not going to make enough money to go full-time.
Case in point, there are many live bands that are phenoms but still struggle. The thing they have in common? They ignore the business.
Art =/= business. Leave the business to the business people and play your goddamn music. If you are good, you will be recognized and rewarded alongside the inferior musicians that spend their time on a business plan instead being good at music. History will tell what sticks to the wall, and it is usually the good musicians - not the ones that have wasted time with their business model....

Well, that might work in the States and in the 90s, but not today over here in Europe, in particular in Germany. We've had a nice band and i've seen badass-bands in all these years of playing for some cash to fill the band-van. You might sell some merch and stuff but that's not all. I like Dave, i loved and still love Nirvana, but he can't just say it like that. They started out in the early 90s, where MTV was MTV, not these Jersey Shore Style-dipshits hopping around.. There was no internet, there was music culture, going to see bands live was a lifestyle. Dave did not start doing music today. His interpretation of this is not describing the opportunities of the present, that's all i can say. And no, I don't hate him.. Just sayin'.. Today it's all about the fucking $$$$, Kanye West, Pitbull and all these lyrical wordsmiths (as they say) creating crapshit² for the masses

I came here from a video of a classical musician complaining about people just offering gigs for exposure... This quote is something that I think a lot of "pro" musicians need to here. Initially, no one is going to just hand you stacks of cash for playing music. You have to be doing it for the right reasons, otherwise it will not be worth it trying to compete against other bands who are doing it out of love/passion.

Yeah but you have to be smart about this. Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles

I hate how all modern songs have very low dynamic range. Recent music is so loud that it hurts my ears. Anything from 80's to early 2000's (of course not remastered shit) sounds great. So one of my advises would be to not run after loudness, rather produce music the way it sounds better.
Been in the business for 30 years, Dave is absolutely 100 correct. People are gettin what he is saying twisted, they think he's talking about money.... he's not! he's talking about getting out there do what you love, playing your music. You define what the meaning of success is for yourself, for Dave it believe that it's always been about the music first, everything else second. You have to realize that because he loved being a performing musician, way before Nirvana, money was bound to be by default at some point because they were doing everything right, played all the clubs, built a fan base, attracted label attention. My artist perform all over the damn place, there are plenty of venues, Monday through Friday, if you are of the ones saying Dave's advise doesn't work, then you don't take you craft serious enough, sorry! Cause when you're not performing on that stage, guess who is? my artist! Step ya game up, stop complaining, besides, what's the alternative to what Dave is saying?... sittin on your ass?

I'm pretty sure Dave was talking about technology as pertaining to being used in their production of their songs and music in general. It's overwhelmingly obvious that in the internet age that we live in that technology is paramount these days. I really think he a little smarter than to think you can ignore the world you live in when it is so technology driven.
Don't aim for money or popularity but achieve your talent and make sure your a badass at it.the rest will fall into place. Don't worry about the BIG REWARDS, but be happy in knowing you made it and stepped foot on that stage to begin with

A real musician doesn’t play music because they want to look cool or sophisticated. A real musician plays music because they love it. I have no respect for anybody who learns music or learn an instrument because they want to impress people. There’s only one right answer to when someone asks you why do you play music:

Writers, write, Drummers, drum, Singers, sing, Cooks, cook...there's a pattern. If you are NOT doing the thing that you keep whining about, its because you are really not DOING it. If you love it, then it's all the buoyancy you need.
Most people are full of shit in this regard, because in the end it take some form of sacrifice. And that is generally the place where dreams go to die.
Stephen King writes for about 6 hours a day. Nearly all of his writing will go into the shredder. But within that 6 hours a day of writing will an idea emerge. No writing, no idea.

Grohl doesn't understand TicketMaster... or the reality that we can't just "go out and see" a band we love. The live stuff is reserved for the wealthy. Most people can't afford a $200 ticket.
Online streaming, social media and the focus on the single rather than the album have HEAVILY changed the game though, for bands starting out.
Simple, there are lots of very talented musicians and bands out there. Fact. only a very small percentage will make it. Fact, the ones that do need a hell of a lot of luck on there side but a pre requisite for getting anywhere is you have to be at the top of your game. Being a successful musician for most people means making a living out of it. You can't really expect to go and make a living out of music by just playing live unless you have an established following. The key question is how do you create a demand for what you do? This is where being technology savvy comes in...if you did not have a clue about technology nowadays you would be at distinct disadvantage versus someone else who does!!!
Its easy for him to say that product placement and things alike doesn't matter, If you play metal music in a club known for reggae you wont go far... He has a team behind him making sure everything his bands do is recognised and merchandised. Yes playing live is the most important thing, but recording is also majorly important...
i say u need a mobile app, a facebook page, a reverbnation page, bandsintown page, soundcloud channel and a bunch of cds.. cost for all of these ? Very little.....then play everywhere u can.. the cream will rise to the top.... do u need a label ? NO....

I agree with some of Dave's points, but he fails to realize that he got big over 20 years ago when rock bands still had competitive relevance more wide spread. Where do these A&R people exist? they don't exist anywhere I try to find these people in my area but I can't do they only exist in California? like christ. also, to the people saying being in a famous rock band or being a famous artist is not a "real" job are just trolling. IT IS A REAL JOB OTHERWISE NO ONE WOULD BE MAKING A FULL TIME CAREER FROM IT. I encourage people to keep getting themselves out there but the whole technology and marketing doesn't matter is something I must disagree upon. I took music technology courses in college and my audio professors emphasized that every musician needs to know how to work at least one audio software program in hopes of making. it makes you stand out and its frustrating when society tries to keep discouraging people from pursuing their dreams.

It's just that I deal with so many self-defeating thoughts and bs in the head. I once ran into Jonathan Moffet (MJ's drummer) who gave me a similar advice - Gotta be a badass! Like in my country many recording companies prefers Their singers that has no quality voice as long at it has a valuable face.
My advice for anyone interested in music or anything else entertainment related: Never give up on your dream, but also understand, accept, and assume that you will probably not ever be able to make a living from your art alone. Almost everyone who grew up playing music wishes they could do it for a living, but the average person only needs so much new music. As a result, making music alone for a living always has been and always will be a one-in-a-million chance. However, that dosen't mean you ever have to stop playing music and stay open to the possibility of one day making a living from music, nor does it even mean you have to identify with your day job.
Yeah, do what most guys and me do, get a job, work on the side as much as you can. But never ever stop creating and putting out that music/art. It'll wear you out and you'll be exhausted most of the time, but atleast you'll be somewhat stable financially, busy and content. Who knows, maybe one day you'll even get that traction and not have to work as much, thats my only real hope, to be selfsufficient doing what i love. A lot of people expect to much/ dont do enough for it, thats the downfall for so many. If you suceed you suceed, if you arent as successful, atleast keep trying.
