    I like the way you put the theory to it because in gospel music we look at those chords as minor 7th. The tritones we use are usually used exclusively in the left hand( especially when playing the organ) and its usually the 3rd and flat 7 of the bass note

    Hi jazzebong, they are both originals that our church team recorded. You can find them at gsialbum.com "Draw Near" can be found on The Glory of a Life album. "Faithful, Stronger" is found on the Supernatural album. Thanks for watching!

  • @OurWorshipSound
    @OurWorshipSound  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're still correct. Basically, a tritone just replaces a minor 7th (or dominant) chord with another minor 7th chord a tritone away. e.g. replace an F7 with a B7

    Learning is the fun part! Don't be discouraged by this video at all, though. God's people worshiped for centuries without the benefit of tritone substitution. :-p Thanks for watching; let me know if there's anything I can do to help fill in gaps.

    Hi, thanks for the lessons. I've been playing for many years in church as well and I "know a lot" practically, by ear, but I don't know the theory behind it. I've never really felt the need to learn music theory, but I find it fascinating, especially because, as I said, I just discovered many things by myself, but I had know idea how to explain it, so when I see things properly explained I just go "yeah, that's it, I know that". So, my question is, if I want to educate myself, how can I start to learn music theory? Could you recommend any material -from elementary to advanced levels- that I could follow? I'm now getting pieces and bits here and there, but I'd love to study music theory more systematically. Please help me :) Any advice? Thanks a lot!

    r3vun, you certainly could go to Cm. I didn't go there because I was keeping everything in the context of the key, F Major. In that key, C is a major chord, but try Cm and if it sounds good, go for it.

    How to play all the keys in one song?

    • @victorvalle805
      @victorvalle805 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emmanuel Atta Afriyie You can use suspended chords to change keys more naturally. you can move up or down a half step to be dramatic changing chords. you can use both to eventaully play "all" keys. just be thoughtful about it and it shouldnt be such an ugly sound.

    When you do the tritone sub why did you keep playing the C in the top voice? On a piano if you're just letting it sound the Cb bass note kind of overpowers it but I'd imagine you should lift that finger if using an organ or use a different voicing that otherwise omits the C if you don't want parallel octaves with B (Cb) resolving to Bb. I'm guessing that the clash works out on a piano and you do it intentionally because they are in different registers .

    I like to use the F7#5 ..notes A C# Eb F.. Then go to the 4 chord Bb or its relative min7 Gmin7 .. Funny thing it F7#5 is a.disguised Subdominanant tritone sit B7 sus 2.. I recently started using the tritone.subs. When I look over jazz songs especially ..they are on chords of the the.songs
    This works.in.songs like.amazing Grace.

    Could this also be thought of as a dominant-functioning German Augmented 6th?

    • @georgewalker4448
      @georgewalker4448 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Caleb Pendergast Are you talking about around 6:00? This is a Dm7, Ddim7, Gm. The Ab is there but its function is to be the dim 5th of the Dm. It's only a German aug 6th if the root of the aug6 is a half step above the V of the new One chord then resolving to the One. To go to C, it would be an Ab+6, G7, C. Aug 6th work very well for going before a V i resolution.

    I never hear these in classical music, like bach and stuff. Isn't stuff like this influenced by blues, jazz, and etc?

    • @chriscarlisle8997
      @chriscarlisle8997 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Music changed a lot in the 1900s so yes jazz and blues and even rock and metal would use tritones to create suspense through chord changes. Classical music never really used this type of suspense, instead classical composers would use 7th chords to create suspense

    • @Danilo8208SS

      +IForYew This kind of stuff absolutely exists in classical music. Look up Richard Wagner, Claude Debussy and Aram Khachaturian.
