I watched Edward Scissorhands last night, and I finally understand why the local Avon Lady entered his dark castle. She wandered around his home until she found him cowering in the dark, all in the name of trying to make a sale. Not so far fetched after all.

Off topic, but I had moment of realization today. I discovered I grew up having MLM company (Avon) around me. It was a neighbor that kept coming to my grandma's house and giving us famous Avon catalog. My mother was usually picking some make-up stuff and I could do the same, but instead was choosing cute accessories. I didn't realize untill Hannah videos it was indeed a MLM company. I was really young, maybe less than 13!

When my son passed at the age of 15 days I didn’t know a friend was into MK. She said I deserved a makeover and she wanted to do it for free and pamper me, I went to her house after being in bed with grief and depression for three weeks. I show up and there’s a lady there I didn’t know but she said it was a close friend of hers. Little did I know it was an ambush to sell me MK and her “friend” was her up line that spent an hour trying to push me to buy and sign up. I told her mentally and financially I couldn’t and she says well if you just sign up you won’t have time to think about bad stuff and you’ll make money. I ended up bawling from the pressure she was giving me and left with only foundation and blush on. I never spoke to that friend again for trying to take advantage of me in my darkest moments in time

You know when I went through one of my hardest breakups I couldn’t keep food down for about 3 months. I was already fit and lean as an adult very active athlete and knew my predisposition to my ED as I had been diagnosed by my pediatrician when I was 5. Yep. I focused really hard on trying to keep down what I could but I dropped so much weight and basically wasn’t eating for that time. When I did start to heal I stayed very very lean as I took the next year to learn to eat again. No one not one person knew I was struggling. I held a lot of shame and felt it was my own responsibility to take care of myself so when I finally came out with my story at some point everyone close to me was floored.
It’s so true. You never know what people are going through. You never truly know why things that happen are happening to people.

@@shanel4294 I know, it’s hard to understand the concept of “how could God let this happen”.. The way I understand it, is that God is all love and he is all good, but that’s different than being all powerful over our lives on earth. We have free will. Unfortunately some people use that to make horrible choices. And all the other forces we can’t control like sickness and tragedy. We can choose to believe in God or not. Christians, priests, pastors and the Bible will not promise you that your life will be wonderful if only you just pray to God. Being a Christian is having faith that after death he will take us home to him and save us from suffering in death even worse than we do in life.

My cousin who’s a devout Christian was roped into an MLM shortly after the death of her mom, my aunt, by a glioblastoma. She was so vulnerable and was suddenly faced with the prospect of raising her 6 younger siblings (her dad didn’t know how to care for kids, quiverfull Evangelical fundamentalist deal, he never was involved in childcare until she was in hospice, so as the oldest girl my cousin was the new mom), so a much older woman from their church swooped in and said she could make a ton of money without going to college or working a traditional job. She was 18. I was the same age as her and we were in close contact at the time, but I didn’t know about MLMs and I thought it sounded a little weird but I didn’t do anything to dissuade her. Long story short she got screwed over and a decade later she is still not OK and blames herself for her siblings’ pain and the family not doing great financially.
She had wanted to go to college. She was also an amazing writer, and had written 2 novels by the time she was 17. Now she’s just fruitlessly trying over and over again to be an entrepreneur. I hate that woman from her church.

I'm also someone who lost a significant amount of weight quickly and was praised up and down about it but the whole time I was at my worst mental health space I'd ever been and restricting myself in punishing ways. At work I'd get backhanded compliments from others struggling with their own bodies and from my family I got praise for self control. It was bad. I still struggle with this when my mental health dips, it is incredible to have had my first experience with it almost 20 years ago and the praise cycle still hasn't changed culturally.

I learned long ago to never comment on someone's weight. Unless you know them very well and you know they are on a weight loss journey, it's best to not say anything. We don't know where they are in terms of how they feel about their body so making comments like "Wow, you've lost weight!" or "You've really slimmed down." can be unwittingly hurtful. At my heaviest going through depression, in an abusive relationship leading to divorce, people would comment that I looked great for losing 30 pounds when in reality I was not coping. I honestly didn't think of myself as being overweight before my world started crashing down so those comments made me even more self conscious about myself. Instead of making comment on someone's body, I try to comment on their personality, their smile, or something that's uplifting in regards to who they are as a person.

Not knowing about a company being an MLM is so real. I'm from Brazil and didn't even know that it was a whole system before finding this channel, and then I realised my grandpa spent many years working in an MLM, and that most people I know buy products from a few others occasionally, because the products are just kind of good and cheaper than other brands. My sister and I were very surprised to find that we are surrounded by them as well, just not as much as Americans seem to be

Patricia makes me think about how my mother was sick with stage 4 cancer, put into in-home hospice which she didn't want to do as she felt everyone was giving up on her, was told by some hospice preacher dude that she was ill because she wasn't praying or going to church enough. It broke my mom, and honestly that situation made me a lot more skeptical of religious folks who may have monetary stakes in whatever they're doing. He told my mom that if she didn't try to be a better Christian, she was going to die and go to hell.
Some people really just don't know the right words to say to others, and even worse some people will say things with the hope that it'll make others dependent on them. My mother did pass away, almost eleven years ago now. I still have some lingering hatred towards the man that said that to my own mom, and I worry that he said that kind of thing to many others. I wonder if he just had no empathy for the sick and legitimately thought my mom was sick because she hadn't been very spiritual (at least outwardly, I'm not sure what she was going through internally). But a big part of me thinks that maybe he had some other incentives.
I am glad that the person in the second story realized right away that what Patricia said was cruel. Often I find myself just agreeing with whatever someone is saying especially if I am uncomfortable. I hope she is doing well now and continues to improve and thrive.

I didn’t realize that my manager has recommended at least 5 MLMs to me until I started watching your videos. When I first started working there, she invited me to a Taco and Tequila party and told me to bring 2 friends. I thought she was just being nice and because she was my manager, I went and talked two of my friends to go with me. After we ate dinner and had one margarita, a lady started demonstrating household cookware and passing out catalogs. I bought one item, that I never used till this day, just because I didn’t want to seem like we wasted their time. Outside of my manager and her 2 guests, we were the only ones there. It was awkward without the sales pitch but that just made it worse. My friends were good sports about it but I was so embarrassed. Since that day, I’m leery of joining anything she has at her home. She has recommended paparazzi, optavia, and Herbalife to me as well but I just said I wasn’t interested without even really knowing what they were. Idk if she works for these companies or just recommending them but yeah that’s my mlm horror story. And now I side eye my manager a little bit after watching your vids 😆
