I grew up in unheated house and as a child I can remember struggling to roll over under heavy layers of quilts in a bed with 3 siblings. The experiences from my childhood on a farm set me up to appreciate all the comforts I now have. You won’t hear me whining about the trivia we are consumed with now.
I am 72 years old now. We had a coal stove in the kitchen, it only warmed the kitchen n the living room. The rest of the house was ice cold. We had layers of blankets on the bed, plus an outside toilet. When I was in ninth grade we got a furnace n indoor plumbing. I say many times like you, I appreciate what I have today.
This is my 1st time watching your channel. I have lived in a manufacturedmobile home for 25 years, I heat with space heaters, so I know how terribly cold it can get In the single digits! I have been widowed almost 3 years & I live with my 15 year-old Westie. My prayers are with you that your situation changes! I pray you stay warm in the meantime.
I did this my first year here. I was inside a camper with no insulation and one tiny space heater. It was so cold I would cry all day. Everything I touched was freezing. That was 5 yrs ago. I finally got into a rent-to-own cabin. Having it wired professionally cost around$1,200. Best thing I ever did! At least it was insulated. Hope, determination and NEVER giving up helps tremendously!! This summer, we are trading a kayak for a heating stove so I no longer have to worry @ losing power during ice storms. I have no running water so some days I collect snow and melt it to use for bathing, but I am thrilled in spring when my water catchment barrels fill up. Everything will iron out. Never, ever EVER give up❤
I’m 66. Remember in uk early 1960’s, coats on bed, blanket and layers of broad sheet newspapers on the bed between layers. Hats, bed socks, jumper over pajamas. I still feel the cold, even in central heating when everyone else is sweating. I feel for you. Hope you enjoyed your hot shower. Spring is coming. Best wishes from Devon uk.
Praying for you Dia. It might be helpful to hang a blanket or quilt from the upper bunk down your bedside to the floor, kind of like a tent and reflectix backed with some sort of padding to insulate the windows near your bedside. These would help you to be warmer at night. God bless you. 🙏🏻
I’ve slept in cars before with snow on the ground and blizzards, and I do truly believe in things that have wool in them. Anything with cotton just doesn’t go in cold weather cotton is good for summer, but not winter.
Another thing I did that really made the difference was to put up my 3 season bike tent inside the sienna . I did put a light wool blanket over the top of it too. Sometimes you can find these wool blankets at thrift shops coming from estate sales . Or you can double sleeping bag your bedding . I also cover or make a wool shield over my sleep apnea machine but leave the filter area are exposed. *** Never cover over the side vent of the Toyota Prius . *** I have a Prius which I use for the long haul trips across country . I rarely use the heater at night. The Prius uses 1/4 of a gallon of gas in a 11 hour time period . One thing a dealer point out to me in Texas never over pack the Prius . The generator needs air . And vents need air .
Cover the window with plastic wrap so it's a little more insulated and you can still see outside. Glad you have the van to warm and go to places. The summer is almost here, yay. 🌞 So happy for you that the travel trailer is a gift.

@@RobinRockefellershe has a power bank or something that was powering her coffee maker. I don't know the details. She probably couldn't run all of them but maybe one. Maybe a large heating pad with a shut off timer. Fairly inexpensive, mine is a "heating pad for back and shoulders " and is just 135 watts. I got it for back pain but it keeps me toasty.
hot water bottles in the bed at night will still be warm in the morning when you get up. it's what I used to do when I lived in an old house in UK without heating
as someone who has lived in my rv during very cold weather. drain all faucets before the cold hits if you are not going to run antifreeze through the lines.. use bottled water, nothing in drains. put a big pot of water on the stove. start boiling that before you get out of bed. by the time it boils the place will be heated and you can use that warm water for bath, breakfast, dishes, etc etc. just toss out the used water on the ground.
I remember, as a child, living in a house where we had icicles on the inside of the windows. One fire in the living room. I used to take a hot-water bottle to bed and keep my clothes at the foot end. Getting dressed under the covers🥶
My childhood was exactly the same! We would use lemonade bottles filled with hot water. Ice on the inside of the windows was the norm. I live on a boat now..I'm 65 and its not much different in the winter!
Getting rid of the storage unit is a good idea. Only save pictures and important papers. Furniture and clothing will come and go in your life, you won't miss it.
Might be worth paying for an electric hook up at a campsite during the coldest months then you can have a heater on and an electric blanket on your bed.
Hello Ma'am, been a while since I watched, but I work for Goodwill, they will help you find a job, or get you one with them. Pays good, easy work, the specialize in doing that
I grew up on farms 1950s/60s/1970s. No heating, just one fire place. My dad first up in morning 6.00a.m. jump into freezing cold clothes, straight outside for animals. We had a fumey old oil stove mum put on for me to get dressed by. Draughty metal windows, ice on inside. Ancient boiler/boiler room that filled kitchen etc with fumes when wind blowing certsin way. Could only have about 6" water each once week for bath (3 of us) as old tank also supplied farm house, had snow falling on us in bath from old sky light window for while till dad covered it with plastic. Before this, up to 1963, diff farm had tin bath. Also once lived in old mobile home where sheet edges were frozen to wall by morning. We wore coats with hoods in that time in winter! So happy in my dotage I have a lovely warm little bungalow, happy days. 😊
@DiasFrugalLife ...it was interesting lol. The top off was the ancient chimney of the boiler room came down in gales on a new year's eve, straight through our flat roof bungalow into kitchen narrowly missing my mum, while dad had just luckily gone to check my pony was o.k. I hope you are sorted out soon. ❤️
Boil a river rock, wrap in foil. Then a hand towl, put under the blanket. I had a power outage when i lived in my rv in Montana. And i used the last of my propane to boil the stone. It saved my arse. I woke up it was neg 2. But i slept like a baby
Awe! Im sorry about your situation. Im struggling right now also. But i still have my house for now and heat. If you lived close id let you stay with me, so you have heat. I will pray for you! 🙏 Im in Michigan.
Padding from dinette and both bunks probably could be used to create “wallls” around the lower bunk which would decrease drafts and help trap heat around you.
Try to rig up a duvet or blankets over your bed to make a "tent" enclosing your bed. It does help. Hot water bottles are a blessing! Taping a layer of plastic over your windows with a gap in the middle, that helps. Having several layers in your curtains, that helps.
Good morning Dia, sending you prayers as you are navigating through this difficult time, please remember that this difficult time is only a season, this is your time to restructure and rebuild. Even though the season seems like it's never ending, you will get through it. Remind yourself that you are strong, and give yourself mercy, be kind to yourself. I'm very sorry that you are cold, try to get wool materials to keep warm. I currently don't use the heat in my place as I can't afford to have it repaired, again sending prayers and hugs to you. Remember you got this. ❤❤
One winter we had no heating (UK) . Was very cold. We managed by sleeping with layers on, vests, pj's, thin jumper, double socks, gloves, hat and those fleecy dressing gowns are good for warmth. Also hot water bottles. We had a microwave and used to fill double layer socks with rice and heat for a minute.
Plastic between your layers of blankets help. My nose gets cold, can't sleep with my head under blankets, I make a tent over my bed. House sitting-pet sitting pays nice but it's temporary housing. Some storage places offer an apt to keep someone on site, my sister did this with her 3 teens, or did apt management for discounted apt. I took a job as a companion for an older man, he cleaned more than I did and taught me how to cook his style of cornbread, I just cooked breakfast & lunch for a nice room in his house for me & my baby and min. wage. His daughter brought him supper. He bathed all on his own, but needed someone in the house in case, he was in a wheelchair but had a modified van and drove, though he shouldn't. There are a lot of lonely folks, afraid, and without a caregiver they risk going in a nursing home. His daughter tried a food truck, when it failed, she replaced me. This was okay, I'd saved up enough to start over. If I had been single I could have worked a 2nd job or gone back to school.
Thick clothing and socks with an Xtra large heating pad under you and heating pad on top of you with heating blanket. We are on our own after we leave the bed! This does thoroughly suck! I think of the poor folks trying to survive on the streets and it makes cry! ❤
Ice salt may help melt the frozen water in faucet. I was here to recommend for heater the people in the comment are so generous with recommendations. You're in prayers. Stay safe ❤
I lived in a van for a few years and I had a little portable power station that i would use to plug in my blow dryer and then I would use it under the covers whenever I felt a little chill. It worked so well.
A Mr.Buddy heater will help alot. Get one of those woodstove fans that attach to the top. Close off your "bedroom" from the rest of the space to keep it warm where you sleep. Just make sure you get a co2 monitor. Always be safe
@@missycitty9478 right? I would absolutely find a way to get some kind of space heater. Idc if it was my last money. Food can be found at pantries and generous people. I’m not criticizing her at all. Just saying I’m not going to die from hypothermia. Being in ca that’s easy to say but it does get cold here in the winter.
@@DiasFrugalLife I’m a financial coach here. And you are exactly right about the job thing. Also disasters. And about life changing in an instant. But what I don’t understand is that when you had the good job, why didn’t you plan for this with an emergency fund. I always tell my clients that not having an emergency fund is an EMERGENCY! And credit cards are not emergency funds people. You should have at least six months of your expenses covered in case of an emergency. For some, I would recommend 9 to 12 months. I hope that your situation improves.
- Wear something underneath your sleepwear (long johns, leggings, etc) and multiple pairs of socks. - Cover those windows with something more than just blinds. At the very least at night if nothing else. Anything will work, even cheap little throw blankets can make a world of difference. - Wool works better with gathering and conserving heat over things like cotton or polyester. - If you're struggling to find work, try fast food places. I know it's not ideal and it doesn't have to be long term, but it's one of the easier kind of jobs to acquire. It can put a little money in your pocket and help for resumes when searching for other jobs. Hope things get better for you!
When I used to live in a camper, I got ready for work in front of table where little portable heater was, it was 12° , electric blanket and hot tea could help, praying your situation gets better soon
When i had no heat i got a kerosene heater !! I had to keep my eye on it but it worked!! I don't ask or depend on anyone something my dad told me years ago!!!
I refuse to believe that you've made it this far without depending on a single person for anything. That is just not realistic and if you say otherwise, you're not being truthful.
Light some candles if you have any laying around. Those tall skinny ones in the glass jars at dollar tree are a good deal, the ones that often have religious themes. I noticed when I couldn’t afford heat, candles made a difference. I also agree with the people that said a Mr buddy propane heater would be helpful. That’s what got me through a power outage we had last winter due to a blizzard. I pray that god blesses you with everything you need to live comfortably ❤
oh gosh I hope you get warm , we got another cold front coming supposed to be even worse this time . Im praying all this cold just goes away . Please stay safe in this
I don't have heat, either, and the wind chills are below zero in Ohio. I have 3 layers of clothing on (plus an oversized hoodie) a hat, 3 pairs of socks, and 7 blankets, plus my 3 cats sleep with me. I drink hot chocolate and tea, and soups to stay warm. It's sure no fun.
My trick for staying warm in my van is I have a 2-in memory foam topper and it traps in my body heat and it keeps me warm. And in the mornings when I got to get up in the cold I put my clothes in the blankets with me and get them warm before putting them on
My husband and i was homeless for years we slept in our vehicle and in a camper too, i know the struggles i am now in a home with our children sadly my husband never got to see a home with us he passed away from a rare cancer a year ago it humbles me knowing i overcame the hardtimes in my life and the ones i love so much i pray Jesus helps you with your needs and you are protected and blessed sending thoughts, love and care God bless from Tam ❤😊🙏🙏
A heater buddy from TSC is reasonable, runs on small or large (grill size) propane tanks. My family keeps them for winter emergencies. Daughter had to use hers when her furnace went out while waiting on a repairman to come. Heated her whole house for a week & didn't even use up a small tank of propane. It would stretch much longer for you since you've got a much smaller space to heat. They also are equipped with CO2 monitors. Other daughter takes hers camping with them when they go in spring / fall. Hypothermia is serious business. Had a 20 something coworker who didn't tell anyone he was living out of his car freeze to death on such a night.
This was so entertaining to watch!! And I’ll recommend maybe investing in a heated blanket but make sure is a good quality one, some of them have a tendency to burn
Your freezer will also insulate from the cold. Perhaps, you could put your water bottles in it. Perhaps you could add a bottle or two of hot water to add warmth. I have used canning jars and spaghetti sauce jars to hold hot water. I have seen instant pots at thrift stores. I use mine as a humidifier: add water and set on warmer setting. Humid air retains heat better than dry air. Infrared heat is good for drafty spaces because it heats objects not air. Currently Amazon has one for $65. An electric blanket or mattress pad doesn’t draw much wattage esp if you can get a 12v blanket which usually sell at truck stops. Advantage is blanket also can be used as seat heater. I know all this would be expensive; see what is affordable for you.
When l didnt have electricity in my home we bought some candles and place them in each room and close the door and it keep the room nice and toasty the candles help us alot
Sending love and hugs. I’m living in a loveless home…haven’t been touched in 10 yrs. My only recourse is to live in my Honda. W having MS a broken back and other issues I’m trying to decide between being able to breathe or being able to eat. 😭 😢 🙏 ❤ 🕊️
Electric blanket laid under you is a cheap way to keep warm or a tiny space heater for $15 onAmazon to run at night for cheap. I use these to save money on propane in the winter. I just joined your channel. Hope that helps too. Praying for you my friend. Your Michigan Fan and Friend Araminta ❤
There are 'self heating' pet beds available on Amazon, i have two of them that I put on my bed and they are great for keeping me warm in my unheated house over the past 3 winters.

if you can afford it...go to Walmart and get a 1 person tent and set it up on your bed. It will trap in your body heat and be warmer.
If you can get some straw and sew it into some material and put it over that tent...
If you don't have straw, a blanket over the tent provides insulation as well. Godspeed, brave, sweet girl.
Great suggestions.

Praise God! You have a beautiful spirit, you deserve a blessing.
Thank you. 😊 💜♥️💜
I do understand how expensive it can be to make home repairs.
A rubber hot water bottle with a cover is a game changer. Fill it with boiling water and put it under your covers with you to keep you warm.
Definitely the tent over the bed.. I’ve heard it gets that warm you have to take layers of clothing off it gets that warm ❤😊
Get an electric ceramic heater at Walmart $30 will heat your van it does mine.
I have a very small heater that you put in the outlet and heats up a room well. Think it was maybe 20 dollars.
Invest in wool blankets. You can bundle up in them, use them as rugs even pin them up on your walls to cover windows and doorways.
Put your car heat on and off thruout the day. Thats what i do plus go to library and spend time there
One winter we had no heating (UK) . Was very cold. We managed by sleeping with layers on, vests, pj's, thin jumper, double socks, gloves, hat and those fleecy dressing gowns are good for warmth. Also hot water bottles. We had a microwave and used to fill double layer socks with rice and heat for a minute.
Wow 😮 thanks for sharing!
The warmed rice really does help!
I will send many prayers your way that things will improve for you & that you will find a good job soon ❤ Stay strong.
Try to get hand warmers luv. Then you can slip them in your sheets or even keep them in your clothes.
Thank you, 😊 I will try that.
@@DiasFrugalLife. And that same brand sells toe warmers too. They have adhesive to stick on the bottom of your socks. Preferably thick socks
I prefer rechargeable hand warmers over disposable
@@donotRussiamyMerica I hear you people use different hand warmers for different reason which is why I just said hand warmers in general.
Stay safe! It’s miserable being cold.
It really is 🥶 thank you!
Thick clothing and socks with an Xtra large heating pad under you and heating pad on top of you with heating blanket. We are on our own after we leave the bed! This does thoroughly suck! I think of the poor folks trying to survive on the streets and it makes cry! ❤
Terra Cotta flower pots and a candle makes a heater. There's a TH-cam video about it. Make a canopy bed to trap the heat around your bed.
Yes and a lot of people put them over their propane burner too.
I'm living without heat too. It's very hard to get up, but I had to cook for my family. 😊❤
Ice salt may help melt the frozen water in faucet. I was here to recommend for heater the people in the comment are so generous with recommendations. You're in prayers. Stay safe ❤
Prayers for you. 🙏🏼
Heated blanket and heated socks ran by a power bank really help!
I lived in a van for a few years and I had a little portable power station that i would use to plug in my blow dryer and then I would use it under the covers whenever I felt a little chill. It worked so well.
Ohhh 😮 I never thought to do that. 👍 Thanks
Hair dryers can be dangerous and get red hot. Easy to cause a fire.
Under your tiny home is a water tank valve to winterize your home. Open the valve so all your water lines don't crack open. 😮❤😊
I know what it's like trying to keep warm but no heat I don't even want to get out of bed or hardly to move my heart goes out to you❤😮
I had to subscribe. It's not everyday that I meet another Dia❤
You're frugal, I'm also frugal. I believe in saving a dollar.
* Dia is my nickname.

Dia is my nickname too
I don’t understand why don’t you have any electric space heaters that you can plug in
A Mr.Buddy heater will help alot. Get one of those woodstove fans that attach to the top.
Close off your "bedroom" from the rest of the space to keep it warm where you sleep.
Just make sure you get a co2 monitor. Always be safe
So, risk death instead of paying a little extra money for some warmth?
I don't understand.
@@karadodge7118 exactly!
Praying for you sweet lady ❤️
I'm in a similar situation. I have some really soft gloves that I sometimes put on for bedtime. It helps to have all of your extremities covered.
Get a box of shake to activate hand warmers. Get a hot water bottle or two. ❤❤❤
Thanks!
Thank you!! 😊
When i had no heat i got a kerosene heater !! I had to keep my eye on it but it worked!! I don't ask or depend on anyone something my dad told me years ago!!!
I think it is good to ask for help!
I refuse to believe that you've made it this far without depending on a single person for anything. That is just not realistic and if you say otherwise, you're not being truthful.

Lovely your little home 💝 aerys will be better believe of God 🙏 will get better 🙏 I love your channel on TH-cam video 📸 📸 keep watching ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
Praying for you!! You have such a wonderful spirit!
Thank you! I am definitely looking into those buddy heaters.
oh gosh I hope you get warm , we got another cold front coming supposed to be even worse this time . Im praying all this cold just goes away . Please stay safe in this
@@Sheribail3 thanks Sheri! Oh my gosh yes, this cold needs to go easy on us lol
Goose down sleeping bag...worked great outside Nome Alaska. I actually get hot in it. Goose down.
Follow THIS advice!!! Alaskans KNOW!!!!😊
@julimartin7698 So do Coloradans
My trick for staying warm in my van is I have a 2-in memory foam topper and it traps in my body heat and it keeps me warm. And in the mornings when I got to get up in the cold I put my clothes in the blankets with me and get them warm before putting them on
Look into getting a Mr Buddy heater. I think you can get it at Walmart. A lot of people with vans use them and they seem to work well..Best of luck❤
I will keep you in my prayers😊
Thank you 😊
My husband and i was homeless for years we slept in our vehicle and in a camper too, i know the struggles i am now in a home with our children sadly my husband never got to see a home with us he passed away from a rare cancer a year ago it humbles me knowing i overcame the hardtimes in my life and the ones i love so much i pray Jesus helps you with your needs and you are protected and blessed sending thoughts, love and care God bless from Tam ❤😊🙏🙏
Thank you for sharing 🙏 💜♥️💜
@@DiasFrugalLifeyour very welcome, i saw your video in my feed and i felt lef to share with you and send my prayers and care to you 😊❤🙏🙏
I use a space heater in my room and close the door. Its less expensive than a big heater.
May God bless you and bring warmth to you that you may be comforted. ❤
Thank you! I will definitely look into those.
Newspaper under the sheet helps alot. Stay strong Sis
Get A cheap blow dryer and use it to warm yourself. If you put it under your blankets (don't cover the motor) you'll get warm fast.
Thanks
@@mmirajable thank you 🙏 😁
Try a weighted blanket
We always had hot water bottles ready to go into the bed at night growing up in cold wintery new zealand ❄️ ❄️
Hmm winter comes around every year bout the same time prep early
Exactly! Get necessities in the spring when all the Winter stuff goes on sale !!
You are an inspiration to those who are in similar situation. I wish you only the best life has to offer.
@@pablooso1941 thank you 😊
Add a wool blanket between you and the floor. It will help retain your body heat.
Flannel sheets on the window will stop the wind chill flowing through, I have some on my window and it stopping the chill.
Hot water bottles and wool blankets, i swear by them. Has to be proper wool not poly blends, youll be so warm and cosy.
I am praying for you to get I help immediate god. Bless from Essex England x
Camping tent and Camping sleeping bag on top of your bed
Electric heating blanket
Small electric heater
This was so entertaining to watch!! And I’ll recommend maybe investing in a heated blanket but make sure is a good quality one, some of them have a tendency to burn
Entertaining to watch?!
The first comment post states she doesn't have utilities so a heated (electric) blanket wouldn't work.
I have a little $14 space heater off Amazon that warms a whole room on low blast.
I heard that we have to be careful of carbon monoxide
Sending love and hugs.

Get yourself those mexican blankets. no joke. I just got your channel recomendation, already suscribed.
Electric blanket laid under you is a cheap way to keep warm or a tiny space heater for $15 onAmazon to run at night for cheap.
I use these to save money on propane in the winter.
I just joined your channel. Hope that helps too.

There are 'self heating' pet beds available on Amazon, i have two of them that I put on my bed and they are great for keeping me warm in my unheated house over the past 3 winters.
That’s great to know thank you! 😊
@DiasFrugalLife also if you can find teddy bear, or polar, fleece bedding, that's great for keeping you warm at night.
@@Siobhan_ShivaunThe heated pet beds sound like a great idea!
@@GinaKayLandis they are! Don't need electricity, and they keep me warm all night in sub zero temps
