This is a community in which I haven’t heard a lot about, until now. They’ve been through so much, and I really hope all peace and comfort is passed down upon them. 🕊️
It doesn't make sense to me. Two black guys bought it to segregate their people from racism, having their own school, police, and community, and it makes sense to me looking back at the time it was needed. But eventually one of the guys do part of the land to someone else? And now people are mad that the someone else is building something else there? The neighborhood I grew up in is completely different too. I wish we never renovated or gentrification of things, we should keep everything old as it first stand for historical reasons. It's that what they're mad about?
The first time I heard about Eatonville was from Zora Neale Hurston’s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God. I hope the developers listen to the residents of Eatonville, such a rich history, #landback.
I am embarrassed that as a resident of Florida that I did not know anything about this amazing town and community. Shame on us for letting this happen.
I know this area, I live nearby. It's a clear gentrification move by the zoning board. There's already been a lot of development in the area in the last ten years.
Why can't the A.A. with means like: Oprah, Tyler Perry, Viola Davis, John Legend, Stevie Wonder, and others put their funds in to save this beautiful town for postwrity and the education of us all. No matter the color of our skin.
Bc they are controlled by them and then they control themselves. They steel themselves against the suffering of their own ppl contented to live separate and sterile of humanity. I don't envy them at all. No one thinks on them anymore and history won't be kind to them.
Can a Historically Black College step in to expand their university into Eatonville? That would be educationally congruent with the first philanthropists' mission for the land. Is there a historically black college in Florida with a healthy endowment that can afford the land? What about Howard? They probably have the money. So weird that a school board is now asserting its right to be a real estate developer?? Florida is coming up with new autocratic tricks every day, and using school boards to get this ugly work done. A responsible entity giving them money could make them go away, then turn back to the town and do right by the residents. The good news is that college students generate economic activity: little restaurants, rental housing for off campus living, etc. Hope it works. 🗽
It IS interesting that a commercial rebuff is so firmly in place, yet no alternative plan is offered up. What's really going on? If local leadership and national awareness followed up with action after their words, this would be a non-issue, as the town would be thriving.

More than overdue for the USA to take a closer look at the real estate industry nationwide, an ugly industry that has proved to be irresponsible in the past. We might get a handle on inflation in housing costs and reduce homelessness as beneficial byproducts.
FAMU grad here. We have FAMU Law about 10-15 minutes south of Eatonville in Downtown Orlando in Parramore (another historically Black area undergoing urban renewal and gentrification). Parramore was decimated the moment they ran I-4 through there. Please look up the history of the law school to understand your wishful thinking of expansion. HBCU placement will not change urban renewal plans of billionaires put in place 20-30 years ago. Overtown in Miami, Liberty City & many other areas in Orlando & Miami are fighting this but understand there are European billionaires in the back pockets of city officials making this happen.
I think many old small towns have issues with developers. Look at I-25 from Ft. Collins to Denver. There used to be many farms. Now I think there is only 1 abandoned farm house left. I live on the West Side. Of Laramie, between the tracks & the river. The oldest part of the whole town. 2 years ago the railroad took out the tracks that went to Centennial & gave the land back to the city. Which they sold & now there are 6 duplex apt buildings surrounded by houses built in the early 1900's. I live many blocks south of there in a 1870 log cabin. Thankfully there is no open land in my hood!

I am in Eatonville. We need the Orange County Public School School Board to come to the table to BEGIN a dialogue. Right now they are ignoring this issue and hoping we will go away. Guess what? We're not! We need help to force them to the table before the end-of-the-month deadline. We need affordable housing developers and attorneys to offer their services so that we can provide alternatives that meet the needs of the current community. We need help investigating the current developments that "somehow" got through without paying the customary development fees and costs to Eatonville. Let's start here!

At 5:54 the commentator clearly states that the plots were sold off in agreement with the school board, AND the trustees. So please explain how a community that never had ownership, or a legal claim to a piece of property, and the subsequent sales were done in agreement with the owner (OCPS), buyer, and trustees of the estate, now suddenly can say, it's our land, give it back?

A contract like that with racial stipulations would be illegal today, which would render that clause of the contract null and void. Eatonville doesn't own the land, period, and if they want it they should go through the proper eminent domain proceedings and be prepared to pay a fair market value for it. It's also disgusting that residents are "worried about being outnumbered". By whom? Members of different races? Everyone has the right to live wherever they want. You don't GET to have racially pure communities in modern America. The degree of endemic racism Eatonville seems to tolerate is honestly shocking. They need to learn to be a more diverse and inclusive community.
It seems to be the smarter thing to participate in economic development, else have economic blight. Keeping up with the economy and surrounding development is a good idea.

The land was intended to be used for African American education. That was part of the original agreement when the land was sold to the school board.

A contract like that with racial stipulations would be illegal today, which would render that clause of the contract null and void. Eatonville doesn't own the land, period, and if they want it they should go through the proper eminent domain proceedings and be prepared to pay a fair market value for it.
It's also disgusting that residents are "worried about being outnumbered". By whom? Members of different races? Everyone has the right to live wherever they want. You don't GET to have racially pure communities in modern America. The degree of endemic racism Eatonville seems to tolerate is honestly shocking. They need to learn to be a more diverse and inclusive community.
