    Pretty easy fix and clean up. That actually sounds pretty good for its size. Thanks for sharing.

    There's channels here on TH-cam that provide royalty free music you can use to test equipment without fear of copyright strikes. Be pretty simple to download some and make a test tape

    Good video, Brian. The 6BM8 can sound and perform well. My first reel to reel came from Radio Shack in 1965 and had only one 6BM8 for Mono,
    also a 12AX7 pre amp tube and solid state rectifier. It had ample home volume when attached to an 8 inch speaker inside a Truetone Console radio. Great memories........................Oh yeah, the recorder was $59.95 brand new in 65.

      I have a mono Sony R2R from the mid '60's that's a hybrid. I don't remember what tube types are in it; but, it uses a rectifier and an audio output tube. The rest is solid state.

      Nowadays, one 6BM8 tube will set you back 20 to 30 dollars. The triode side is equivalent to one half of a 12AT7 and the pentode dissipates 7 watts. It's a pretty decent sounding tube, pretty popular in Europe and Asia (where it is known as the ECL82), but rare in N. America.

    Strikes me as a sort of dual mono design - a crummy way to do things way back when, but a coveted audiophile approach these days - - "ganging" the volume control would circumvent a bit of the channel separation that a dual mono design would help provide. Interesting amplifier that seemed to sound fairly good, low power output or not. Thanks for posting this rehab radiotvphononut.

    • @HamtaroEL

    • @andygozzo72
      @andygozzo72 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i doubt very much there would be any appreciable crosstalk between channels if the controls are ganged, if any at all, if its designed and assembled properly ,

    • @skip1835
      @skip1835 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andygozzo72 oh, heck yeah Andy, I'm on the same page as you - it's not a high end amp to begin with so my comment is a bit "tongue in cheek" - - if I were actually playing with this specific amp, I'd go ahead and install a ganged volume pot myself - - as for high end gear these days, as you know, a top shelf dual mono design would take everything into consideration, even separate power supplies, again, as I'm sure you know, might be part of the engineered design - - but anyway - - an amp like this Alrad isn't likely to be employed in a system that would be revealing enough to worry about a "ganged" volume pot, so yeah, no argument from me about your comment, I agree - - nice chattin' with ya - - thanks!

    That's a cool little amp! At first, I thought it's a series string, hot chassis but really a well designed product. Never seen one with separate tone controls. I looked up EIA code 1022 and it's IEC.

    • @andygozzo72
      @andygozzo72 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      there are ways of telling if its of mullard/philips origin, they have a goldish number etched into the glass aroung the base, even ones branded differently may have this indicating it was actually made by mullard and supplied to others rebranded or for them to rebrand.... you can come across this a lot with valves/tubes...

    Regarding the dual volume and tone controls, my parents had a Zenith combo unit with concentric pots and knobs that could be adjusted separately with both hands. Much more convenient than this. Cool amp nonetheless, just because it's rare if nothing else.

    nice little beast, unfortunately, those smallish all glass triode output pentodes such as 6BM8/ECL82 and 6GW8/ECL86 seem to develop grid emission a lot, with anode current rising in use ... luckily there are Russian equivalents to the 6BM8, which are cheaper than the original brands, the originals are now getting very pricey, (even east european made types such as Polish or Yugoslavian), but dont think they ever did a 6GW8 equivalent, pity as i have a fair few 'bad' ones and are far more expensive than the 6BM8

    • @andygozzo72
      @andygozzo72 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the Russians did a semi-equivalent to the 6X4, unfortunately different pinout so not a direct drop in replacement!!

      I think I have a Newcomb school record player that uses a single 6GW8. I just looked up the price of the tube and Antique Electronics Supply wants more for the tube than what the record player is likely worth.

      Telam (Poland) did a ECL86 for sure. I have a whole stack of used ECL86 and what strikes me they all exhibit glass electrolysis traces on the inside. The grid emission issue is mostly due to HV leakover between pins because of the heavy metallic mirror deposit the filaments leave at the base of the tube. It becomes slightly conductive....

    Should be 4Wx4 - because Allrad means 4WD (or 4x4) in German and that's just drawing another line between the A and the l. Sorry, most of my attempts at humor are pretty crappy.

    18:20 "Yeah a lotta what's on this tape is stuff you're not gonna hear on your FM oldies station.". Wait ... there's an _oldies_ FM station? Round here all you hear on FM is modern EDM garbage and Rap crap, even get some of that on AM too.

    • @senilyDeluxe
      @senilyDeluxe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Where I live, even the oldies stations play something from this millenium every third song. It's either this or the /really/ old oldies station where every third song is German Volksmusik which I also can't stand. I'm 36 years old and I listen to the same stuff as my parents (albeit with a slightly higher emphasis on the 80s, but I already miss the 60s, they're currently being phased out, they rarely play them anymore and when, only songs everyone knows, nothing "new"), so in about 20 years, radio will be dead for me... my music taste is like a bit 1930s, some 50s, really love the 60s, lots of 70s, *really* love the 80s and some of the 90s and then like Adele and that's about it.
      I love it when I find old tapes (reel to reel or cassettes) in the trash, they often hold treasures. Shouldn't a song from like the 60s that you've never heard before be exactly equal to any other new song?
