Yanis Varoufakis on Israel-Gaza: 'We Europeans have created this' | UpFront

  • Six weeks after Hamas’s attacks on October 7, Israel continues its bombardment and siege of Gaza.
While Israel’s response has the full support of the majority of European countries, some dissenting voices are making themselves heard and calling for a ceasefire.
So, what role is Europe playing in the Israel-Gaza war? And how has its support for Israel changed over time?
On UpFront, economist and former Greek minister of finance, Yanis Varoufakis, joins Marc Lamont Hill to discuss Europe’s historic responsibility and current role in the Israel-Gaza war.

@@alleymed0250you're misinformed, hizbollah is not anything to do with Palestine. They kicked out the Israelis when they invaded in 2006, their interests is with Israel not palestine. Now the split you are probably referring to is with hamas-fatah, but this division is by design. Firstly, Israel is financially funding fatah to sell the Palestinian cause, look up the Palestine papers. They also used to fund hamas in order to allow them to run for elections. Secondly, gaza is geographically isolated due to the bantustanisation of Palestine, thus, of course, there will be a division if the leaders can't even speak to one another. If America exits the picture, it would be far rosier.

I am Czech, I graduated 20 years ago in international law, politics, diplomacy and modern history and I observe the conflict for all those years and I fully agree with Mr. Varufakis. Politicians in my country and in the EU do not act in my name. It is shame, it is against all principles of humanistic, democratic and free society. I refuse to be part of this. I checked every word of Mr. Varufakis, he is correct and he is a true humanist. One day there will be statues of him in every country. But before that, I am afraid, we will have to undergo tremendous times- our own societies will collapse because they can not sustain in the atmosphere of lies, manipulation, injustice and hypocrisy. People will sooner or later wake up. The young generation will. I am sure.

I so much wish what you write to happen one day.
But i am not so optimistic...
I am Greek,i voted for him in 2015 and i was so happy that he was the man in charge when we clashed with Eu,mainly Germany and Soible, about austerity measures.
At the final moment we all bailed out on him...
The prime minister(Tsipras),his colleagues in the goverment, nearly everybody..
Because we were afraid of the unknown, afraid of a total catastrophy when it was obvious that if we follow Gianis plan the EU will kick us out...
Now nearly 10 years later, nomater what you read in news about Greece, the situation for the people is not better...
What would our situation be if we followed Gianis to the end,we will never know...
But at the end of the day it is a human condition to be afraid to fight against a powerful system that doesnt seem to buckle in any way, even though Gianis tried..
The people, his colleagues didnt, follow him to the end and i dont blame them much...
They were just humans and this is why i am not that optimistic that people sooner or later will wake up...
PS To quote one of my favorite bands(The clash),Gianis administration as a the Greek finance minister fought the law and the law won...

Such a crooked delusional response to 1400 years of Islamist terror exemplified on Oct. 7th Hamas brutality. There already was a two-state solution when Jordan was created in 1947 out of the bulk of the British Mandate Territory in Palestine. Then, in 2005, Israel tried a three-state solution by unilaterally pulling out of Gaza. Within months, rather than building Gaza, Hamas built terror tunnels and rockets and attacked Israel. Varoufakis talks about the Hungarian Nazis, French Nazis, and German Nazis but ignores the pact between Hitler and the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Amin Al Huseinei and the fact that Palestinian Arabs have a religious motivation of Islamic hegemony motivating their jihad. Do we want to see people from the River to the Sea who believe in using civilians as human shields and celebrating the rape of women, mutilation of babies, dismembering of people and Mohamed's proclamation "I have become victorious through terror," or do we want a people who take extreme measures to protect civilians and life generally? Israeli Arabs are 20% of Israeli citizens and have equal rights with the majority Jewish Israeli population. What percentage of Gaza and every other Muslim-majority country is Jewish? 0%. That is what "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free means -- Jew free, or Judenrein as the Nazis chanted.

So glad to see Varoufakis here in Al-Jazeera! He gained my respect few months ago from hearing his take on this crisis as well as others - the man is clear with his moral compass, good sense of logic, smart, well-nformed and isn't afraid to speak out the truth as direct as possible, and he has solid, gentleman manners in responding to dumb journalists who have asked him dumb questions before, without at all being rude. No wonder he's called the Greek "Maverick"! Same to you Marc Lemont - these two men have this in common: shed lights of justice and truths in the midst of "unpopular" times for truth and justice in the mainstream media. Bravo!

The level of insanity in all this through the roof. The way they play with words to build false narratives is nothing short of ridiculous.

Israel builds shelters and bunkers for their own citizens. Shelters for the Palestinian Arab communities living in southern border inside Israel.
The Bedouin Palestinian Arabs hundreds of them died from Hamas rocket fires and some family members were missing kidnapped by Hamas. A Muslim paramedic were tortured and killed after learning that he is a Palestinian Arab.
Hamas is showing blatantly in media how they are training teenage kids in school how to handle weapons. School curriculum for school kids for the destruction of Israel. So what Hamas did is to build tunnels for themselves. They do not care one iota what happens to their own citizens.
Do tell, how do u stop the atrocities being perpetuated by Hamas who is not willing to sit down?

@@SvalbardSleeperDistrict because he is not making any sense. 2 state solutions? Is he in a dreamland?
There have been many diplomatic efforts to realize a two-state solution, starting from the 1991 Madrid Conference. There followed the 1993 Oslo Accords and the failed 2000 Camp David Summit followed by the Taba negotiations in early 2001. In 2002, the Arab League proposed the Arab Peace Initiative. The latest initiative, which also failed, was the 2013-14 peace talks.
It is no longer achievable since both sides are opposed to it. Plus, this conflict has been brewing even prior to the creation of Israel 1948. The British Mandate and UN both miserably failed on their efforts to come up with a solution.
There are 21% Palestinian Arabs co-existing or living inside Israel.
Many [Palestinian Arabs] have died during the constant barrage of rocket fires from Gaza since many of them live near the border. Some of their members were taken hostage by Hamas too.
