    In 1962 at independence there were crown colonies that had population larger than Jamaica's. Hong Kong, Lethsotho, Kenya Colony etc mind you they were given independence shortly after. It was a combination of different factors the Brits did not want the bother and the locals politicians wanted out not primarily to advance the interests of the populace but to advance their own at the expense of the populace.

    I was brought up JLP, but as I watched every documentary and study the history of Jamaica. I think Norman Manley was robbed. I think he should have been Jamaica's first Prime Minister. Busta whom I grew up to admire, did not give his cousin (norman) credit for the getting him out of prison, using up his savings to help him and so forth. I think Norman Manley advocated better for Jamaican independence than Busta. Busta was such an extrovert and the media was extremely limited in that time in Jamaica, that the people did not see what the father of the Jamaica has done, who was the Honorable Norman Manley. Yet, Norman Manley handled it all with dignity, grace, humility and eloquence. He was such a man.

    This is a great documentary compiled by the National Institute of Jamaica a brilliant resource cannot get better than this , this is the sixth time of seeing this documentary. I hope people of Jamaica the children and future generations fine a way to see this documentary . I was born in Jamaica grew up in the UK learnt about independence growing up in the UK but in sixty years almost of independence Jamaica has gone through a lot of trials and tribulations a lot of great successes but with hard work and many dedication place they have made for themselves on the map and world stage and become a country everyone knows just like the rest of the world.

    Actually, Anguilla is now pursuing independence. The newspaper and the chief minister over there have both publicly advocated independence from the UK.

    Norman Manley was an excellent Premier... We were given independence but right now 2012 I don't know what is happening there! I hope that we get a grip soon or things will be going down hill rapidly!!!!

    • @trumpsdantichrist164
      @trumpsdantichrist164 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Manley was not an excellent Premier, he was dynamic yes and he was very much loved by the people, but he was a terrible leader and the decline of Jamaica started with him. Now his father Norman Manley was a better leader and so was Edward Seaga.

      Understand that Jamaica is a tiny island, compared to other nations. Should another country, such as Russia or China decides to take over Jamaica, they would not be able to defend themselves against such super powers.

    • @trumpsdantichrist164
      @trumpsdantichrist164 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That isn't so Bennett we are fully independent. However, we still use the British Privy Council as our final court of appeal and we still have a Governor General as a mark of respect but other than that the British do have a say in our local affairs. However, they do keep a matriarchal eye on us especially in times of disaster they step forward. And in response to @Luv The Truth4ever, I don't think the United Kingdom would allow China to take over Jamaica in the same way they are now warning the Chinese about their role in Hong Kong. The Chinese is however worryingly increasing involved in the region and although previously I would have preferred American and the UK to have that role, with Trump in charge of America currently... I now prefer the Chinese. However, Jamaica is for Jamaicans and as a people we are not that easy to govern so anyone who has any ideas would be in for a surprise... read about the Morant Bay Rebellion and the Maroons.

    • @trumpsdantichrist164
      @trumpsdantichrist164 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Total nonsense! The only thing the British is involved in is that we choose to have the Privy council as the final court of appeal, the UK is involved in nothing else in Jamaica. Indeed there is a process being considered to move that final court to the Caribbean Court of Justice but Jamaicans are on the whole happy for it to remain in the Privy Council for now...

    You say that with outright certainty, I beg to differ. The push for independence was dictated purely for reasons of internal political exigence. Churchill, etc. were dead set against it. But cries of colonialism & imperialism won out. Had Busta/Manley solicited closer constitutional (direct Westminster representation) ties, which we could have, our children's future would have been very different. But, which Jamaican politician voluntarily invites the requirement for accountability?

      I absolutely detest people who spew the notion that some how we would be better off under British rule..ask the Scots and Welsh why the fight for a devolved government, ask the Scots why they held an independence referendum....if people who live 300miles away from Westminster , who look and sound like them, have similar backgrounds...can't get any real support , or investments from the ruling classes in Westminster...what chance do we who are over 5000 miles away with a different culture and background...have...what chance do we have..when people in the north of the UK are crying out for development and investments in transport school and health care....we are proud people and we go it alone..we've been independent for les than 60 years...they have over 500 years practice....give us a chances you unpatriotic ding bat

Its the notion that afro people cannot run its societies come direct feom the colonizers who only cared to exploit us anyway. Long live Jamaica and all afro nations!!

    Jamaica did NOT have the option of remaining under the UK. Independence was the only option. Jamaica has too large of a population to have been supported by the UK. Name one overseas UK territory today that has a population over 100,000!

  • @peterbradshaw8018
    @peterbradshaw8018 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hong Kong was given back in 1997. Population at that time six point five million. If you consider Hong Kong a failure I cant help you. Most folk in Hong Kong wanted the Brits to stay. Sure you had folk who wanted to return to China.

    Micheal Misick of the Turks and Caicos wanted Independence too. Go research about him.

  • @peterbradshaw8018
    @peterbradshaw8018 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And because they want it you automatically believe it is in the best interest of that country? When Micheal Misick was most against colonial interferance what was he doing? What were his motives? I think countries can do well independently like Barbados for example. But you need good leadership. Barbados per capita GDP is about US$ 20 odd jamaica about 9 thousand. These are approximations for last year. Will check latter.
