  • Coming in at 4/40 in the fifth match of the 1985/1986 ODI Series, Steve Waugh plays the type of innings that will become a trademark across his career. While it wasn't enough to get the Aussies over the line, the future captain DID post his highest ODI score and take out Player of the Match honours.
Bonus content: some cracking crowd banners and a terrifying stare down from Kapil Dev.

Steve Waugh was not the best batsman, but he was more determined and can do more to build an innings with others. He was a great leader, and good thinker of the game. He proved what he can do, very well. Everyone loves Steve Waugh.👍👍👍👍👍👍.

Waugh was one of our best Test bats but his ODI record was actually pretty ordinary. Only made three hundreds and averaged 32 in 325 games. Very good medium-pacer of course but he didn't bowl much in the back half of his career.

Moreover Steve played as an all-rounder who later could not bowl much due to back injuries. Playing in 1980s against the Windies and the best attacks of all time on the toughest pitches of all time and the biggest boundaries in history of Cricket, that average playing at 6 most of the times is great. His impact on winning two world cups for his country is bigger than any Lara or Sachin or any other wannabes.

In the first 180 or so of those 325 matches, Waugh batted at nos. 6/7 and was a genuine allrounder. ODI hundreds were not common in those days, even less in Australian grounds. His batting average for much of this time was below 25, it increased to 33 beginning from 1995 onwards when he started batting higher up.

Facing Kapil Dev and all the fast bowlers without any helmets like a true man, and today we have woke dumb T20 cricket, Steve was a tough SOB he doesn't care if you are Ambrose or Walsh or Kapil he will never back down from a challenge and Ricky got this typical Australian midset and was natured by Steve himself and in Ricky's time Australia was truly invincible
