Exploring the Tunnels on Tehachapi Pass: Part II

  • This second part of the Tunnels between Bakersfield and Tehachapi will start at the bottom of the Tehachapi Loop at Tunnel 9. These are all pretty easy to get to and, with the exception of tunnel 9, all can be seen from Highway 58 if you know where to look and all are pretty easy to get to if you know where to go.
    As with the tunnels in Part 1, some of these are long gone and some have an interesting history.
    So, join me for the rest of the tunnels on the mountain!

    I visited Tehachapi tunnel 10 and saw the building of the external portion of the bypass back in 2015, buried a relative in San Diego, came to Bakersfield to visit my Great Uncle's grave , bought fresh fruit east of Bakersfield, went on to Barstow, Las Vegas, Albuquerque and back home to Texas, Really enjoy your vidios

    Thank you Jennifer. Your husband does a wonderful job of recounting the history of these magnificent structures. Far too many railroad videos are boring shots of trains with no commentary. Hearing Mark describe the tunnels in detail is remarkable. Can't wait to watch some more history.

    Great video Mark. My older boy (we have two who are both Eagle Scouts) went to Trona for a weekend campout and the Gem show many years ago. The troop got to go out and mine some Trona crystals. They all came back muddy as hell. Their shoes were ruined by the salt. It was so funny. We were just talking about it and the fun they all had. I sent him a link to both these videos to enjoy. Thanks again for the fun and informative content. 😁

    Great job, Mark...keep up the good history information of your area. Like I said before, I spent my total time in the RH or Back Shop working as an electrician on the diesel locomotives. I also operated the crane for the machinists to rebuild the diesel motors. They seemed to like my operating skills of the O/H crane. They always requested me. I think it was because I would help them to a point they wouldn't have to get up and down so much. I could put parts on the motor without them holding them. They really liked that and it was a challenge for me.

    Here is a little more information for you. On the Long Pine Branch when you leave Mojave, next to the airport, there was a ribbon rail facility located there. The railroad had a hotel for the train crews at the road crossing at Searles (east of the tunnels). In Mojave Yard where the roundhouse used to be, in the "Y" there was cattle corrals to off load the cattle to feed and water them. At the crossing at Brundage & Cottonwood there was a stock loading facility and a hay barn that was owned & used by SP. If you need more info give me a call. I still have the same cell number. Enjoying your posts, brings back lots of memories. Ken Kisor

      Thank you! It is a great place to watch and shoot videos! As to the tunnels, I would say 1, 2, 3 and the ruins of 4 are really the only easily accessible places. This has been so interesting! I drive the 58 all the time and have always loved watching the trains going through the tunnels. It's even better when I'm a passenger so I can really pay attention! I've always wondered if it was safe to pull off the freeway to watch the trains. Is there a designated spot? A friend and I are going to be heading out there in a couple weeks and I'm so excited because I've never seen the Loop and never had the chance to explore out there! I'm really enjoying all your videos.

      Thank you for the kind words and I'm so glad y9u enjoy the channel.
      There is an overlook on Woodford Tehachapi road above the Loop. You can park there and walk the trail that leads north to another overlook on the east side.
      You can also park off the road at the bottom of the loop.
      If you Google earth the area (most of my videos have the coordinates in the description) you can find places to watch from where no one will bother you.

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. the cab is ahead of the smoke and fumes. It builds up behind the first unit and is pulled out by the movement of the train. All the tunnels on the original SP lines were the reason SP started building cab forward steam locomotives.

    Why the radio antennas on each portal? I assume they're repeater antennas, but I'm curious as to why leaky coax isn't used on the tunnel wall instead of what looks to be a rather large Decibel VHF antenna...

      Western Union was the telegraph and communications company. They operated separately from the railroad but were instrumental in its early days.

    Why would they remove the signal bridge at the loop?

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They upgraded the signal system in 2015 to meet the FRA guidelines for PTC. The colorlight signals that work with the new microprocessor signal control system won't work on a bridge. Also, it was a safety issue. Accessing the searchlight signals on the bridge was sketchy.
