WOW! Probably one of the best instructional videos I have ever seen. Clear, concise, great graphics and examples. You have a true talent / skill for this. Thank you so much!
Out of all the Nikon info out here I have to say you're the best. I really enjoy your no nonsense straight to the point yet easy to understand ways. Thank you!
I make sure to go through this superlative video once in a while to keep myself refreshed & not lost with the various options my D800 offers. This video is probably the best on planet to explain the Nikon AF modes and a very valuable quick reference guide as well. Thanks a lot Steve again for this wonderful session.
I watch lots of photography channels on TH-cam but this one always seems to have the most USEFUL content with the least amount of fluff. Always impressive, Steve.
This is one of the best videos on Nikon AF modes that confuses even well initiated Nikon guys. AF is one of the great strengths of Nikon cameras and without a proper understanding of all the modes, we will be wasting the investment we made on our cameras. Great job Steve in explaining this in a very simple, concise and effective manner. I was already on AF-ON focus mode but now switched to AF-C mode to complement. Thanks a lot again!
Steve, thank you so much for this video! I've recently switched from Canon to Nikon, and I've had lots of trouble finding thorough explanations of Nikon's different autofocus modes and how they operate. Despite this video being 2.5 years old, the content is almost entirely relevant to the new D850 that I just acquired. I appreciate you going into such detail. Thanks again!
Someone give this man a raise!! This was a great video! Definitely helped me understand some things I myself had a different understanding of, such as d9 and d21 Focusing. And your illustrations and visual examples make the video even better!
Beautifully explained. I've looked at all manner of sources to clearly explain the multitude of options for AF and thanks to you I finally get it. Great work.
This was so immensely helpful. As someone who's always used single-point AF for moving subjects, I thought I was doing something wrong when I bought a d500 that had all these fancy dynamic-area modes. I couldn't make heads or tails of it from the manuals, but the way you explained it made perfect sense. Thank you so much.
I am hoping someone can help me. I have set up BBF and use it with single auto focus point and continuous focusing. However if I alter from single autofocus point to say D9 or D51, only one focus point remains visible when I take images. Is this right or am I doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hands down Steve! This content was so great, I took copious notes for my D7000 field book! I just got my d7000 last Friday and it is such an awesome piece of gear, I am so happy to learn about each of these features/functions! Thank you for providing TOP SHELF-Quality knowledge, as well as your real life scenarios for ENVIRONMENT/SCENARIO usage. This lesson was super fantastic!!!
I just purchased a Nikon D500. I am a former Navy Photographer who grew up on Speed Graphics, Leica’s, and Nikon F/F2's. Quite a culture shock! To get myself up to speed on the D500 (and AF in particular), all of your videos have been a God Send. So, living in San Diego, I have started with using Pelicans as my subject. Low and Slow! Once I get good focus results I will shift to Seagulls. Faster and much more unpredictable. I will be successful when I can lock on finches, humming birds and all those other little birds that rapidly flitter about! Glad you are here to be such a great guide! BTW, First thing I did was buy your e-book. Great work!
Fantastic video Steve. I re-watch it every year or so to refresh my memory on all the Nikon AF features that I don't use on a regular basis. Great work.
Very concise and very clearly explained. Not just a 'do it like this' video but a WHY you do it. To have the full explanation allows the viewer to decide exactly how it will be useful for his/her own uses. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
Thanks for the excellent explanation of Group Autofocus. I have been using it recently for BIF and have had so many throw aways. Now I understand why. Thanks for being so generous in providing these videos. They are great.
Another exceptionally well done video Steve. Your ability to provide concise and easily understood content in short order (I always appreciate how well you “get to the point”) is nothing short of amazing!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, expertise and experience with us amateur enthusiasts.
A succinct explanation of the various Nikon AF modes. Thanks for taking the time. There's a lot of confusion between dynamic and group modes and you cleared that up nicely.
Very well explained, thank you. You're the one to follow for any Nikon stuff, wildlife, and much more... High quality content, no gimmick, clean, square, articulate and smart. It's nice and helpful.
i didn't even watch this video( yet)... watched first 30 seconds of it, the mention of the e-book, curiosity got the best of me so i went to go check out the website, bought the book, Im only 50 pages into the e-book, and I gotta tell ya, what a GREAT READ! the pictures are so inspirational, the way the book is written it is like having your own Tutor teaching you awesome tips and tricks, things to watch out for, man...I am really impressed. ( HIGHLY recommend buying the e-book)- TWO THUMBS UP !
I'm actually farther from wildlife photography than possibly imaginable (Well... Portraits are considered wildlife in a sense...) But your book is awesome for any photography: Especially when you think about photojournalism. It's very similar in many ways.

Steve Perry is a Nikon Grand Wizard. I bought his e books and can attest - they are jammed packed with useful information. Also, call me a slow learner, but I've watched this video several times and get something new out of it each time. The problem with AutoFocus is that we just don't mess with it a lot. It's usually set it and forget, until you run into a situation that calls for a change. I was shooting my dog catching a ball the other day and was dismayed that the shots were blurry. I spooled up this video and reminded myself about AF-C d9 and wala. Sharp as a tack.
What a great video. I follow and watch several TH-cam channels on photography and although they explain what they are doing and what settings they are using, it is only so much help when you don't fully understand what exactly all the settings do. So I'm very glad I found your channel as it is a precise explanation in laymen terms, which is what I need. Some of what you mentioned here actually made me realize why a certain portion of my images weren't coming out crisp enough so many thanks for that. Onto the next video now..!
What a great channel. Steve, you're presentations are fantastic. I just bought a Nikon 500/ 200-500 and I'm binge watching your videos. Also, get the book!! It's awesome and full of great information, and written in a way that is easily read. Steve has a way of describing photography in an intelligent, technically complete, and humorous way.......highly recommended!!
Hi Steve, Just wanted to say that was some of the best money ever spent on a "how to" type manual. I bought a Z6ii recently and the autofocus was driving me crazy, but BBAF has changed my photography life!!! So many tips in the book went from reading to action immediately. Also thanks for making what I was sure going to be a tortuous and dry read into something funny and enjoyable.
I always share this video whenever there is a question about AF settings. Then found i had my own question, which you answered within 2mins...I noticed i was missing 2-3 frames in a burst in Sport Event shooting, , It was obvious in review its the pause before refocusing. so for me 2:34 answered my question. checked AFC single point, focus at object 1, back button kept on, moved to next subject, no refocus for what felt a long time but reality was 0.4-5 second of out of focus shots. So will put this to 1 and erratic. I am not following just 1 person which would be fine, its target, target, target for 3-4 mins, keepers matter. I was considering buying D5 for this reason but D850 is just to good at everything to chose that over the D5. Just wanted to say thanks and keep up great video's.
Sadly, I have had my D600 for way too long without even knowing the AF/M switch had a button on it. Incredibly helpful video, I can already tell adjusting the AF points will help out a lot in my shooting. Thanks for the video!
Well, to all the people that say Steve talks too fast, you are right! But since we are on TH-cam, I start and stop the video when he is discussing the part I really need to know! I bought both of his books and have read most of each one but I do wish it was a bound book that I could read when I get tired of looking at my computer or phone screens. They are both super informative! I'm a gramma with intermediate skills and still love taking pictures of landscapes and grandkid's ball games. A few portraits here and there. When I retired in 2007 I bought a new Nikon D200. Never had a problem with it and felt I got "mostly" good pictures. Last summer while I was hiking around Arches National Park, I thought my D200 was getting heavy for me and thought it was time to get a new, lighter weight, more up-to-date camera. I started with the D3400, then D5500, followed by the D7500. I didn't really like any of them, and found I didn't like the lighter weighted ones - felt like I didn't have a camera in my hand! So, I've just ordered a used D300 and can hardly wait for it to arrive. I've been reading up on everything I can find on the D300 and I have been watching Steve Perry's videos for this past year as I tried out each of those other cameras and I keep coming back to his videos after watching others. I don't need a video on my camera, don't need all those scene settings and I hated not having all the main buttons on the outside of the camera like my old faithful D200 (over 200,000 shutter count on mine. I ordered the D300 instead of the D500 because the D300 uses the same battery and compact flash cards as my D200. If you don't have those; then jump up to the D500. If you want a great camera for a lot less money - get a D300 or even the more expensive D500 and you will have all you need to take pictures as beautiful as Steve's without spending thousands of dollars. If you are independently wealthy - or a pro - then by all means, get the lastest and most expensive! THANK YOU STEVE!!
I've been trying to learn about the Nikon AF system for a short while now. I must have watched 10 or more videos on this and your explanation has been by far the best so far! Your teaching style and use of examples are perfect! Thank you so much, this video has helped amazingly. Wildlife photography is not general my cup f tea, but your pictures are amazing! Keep up the good work, I have now subscribed!
Hi Steve, Just getting into my D7100 and your videos just keep inspiring me to try new things. I was a little, no, "ALLOT" overwhelmed at first but your video series is kinda like somebody holding my hand as I venture down the scary learning road of knowing/using my DSLR. Thanks again for your videos, there greatly appreciated.
I have had my Nikon D7500 for just over a year now. I was just wondering yesterday what the button inside the AF/M switch did. I have missed so many shots due to all of the setting mentioned in this video. It has been so frustrating and the manual for the camera was not written for someone needing to learn how to operate the camera. If have read almost all of it and still I have learned more from TH-cam videos. Thanks you so much for making this video!
I'm not specialised in wildlife photography at all, but your excellent explanations have helped me understand the AF functions of my new Nikon FX camera. Thanks.
A really great video. Thanks. One of the best explanations of Nikon AF I have ever received. Only one suggestion: don't rush through your videos. You kind of talk a little fast. Clearly you know your stuff. The rest of us are still trying to take it all in. Again, great graphics and great presentation. Thanks!
Hello...just found you!!! FINALLY...I understand the difference between AF-modes/AF Area modes/Single Shot AF and Single Point AF...THANK YOU SO MUCH! x
Hello Steve, After watching your video I just bought, downloaded and browsed quickly the "Secrets To Stunning Wildlife Photography". What a great piece of reading. Simply on point. Thank you very much. Always enough light for a picture Sven
I just love your videos! You are my go-to source for info when I am trying to make decisions or learn about settings, and more. You are like the infinite database of insight into all things photography!
This is the absolute best tutorial on this sometimes confusing AF system! Thanks so much for creating this easy to understand video. Beautiful shots also.
As someone transitioning to the Nikon system this was all super helpful. Now I just need to work on not attaching the lens in the wrong direction:D. Many thanks!
OMG... watching this may have saved me 1500 bucks. Was researching purchasing the D780 because the reviews are saying the AF is better than the 750. That's most likely true BUT I've been using the AFC d51 setting all along! And I do pet photography with action shots. I had the thought process backwards on this setting. Now I'm going to try out my NEW setting with the 750 and hopefully will be more happy with it. Thanks for your very informative videos!!!
Thanks Steve for the concise and simple explanation of the various AF modes on Nikon cameras. I only recently purchased a D810 and was overwhelmed with the myriad of different settings for AF so this was a great help.
Chris - I agree 100%. I learned a lot! I have a D800e and gave up trying to figure out the 'Custom Settings' banks vis-a-vis the usual 'Shooting menu' banks. Thank you Steve.
Thanks so much for the tips! I’m a beginner struggling to master video on my D3300 (definitely not the best for vid) and your videos have helped me understand so much more about using my camera better. Cheers!
Awesome explanation , plain simple and straightforward information with carisma communicating topics . thanks you so much for sharing your own experience in photography. I`m an amateur photographer an it comes very handy to know some tips like this .
I was so frustrated with my D7500, I thought it was a faulty one. I just then configured the AF to be more like what I was used to on my old D90 and now I'm very happy, thanks to you!
Steve, Love all your tips so buying your book was a no brainer. If you are on the fence on buying I say go for it. Packed with amazing tips, some review and lots of great images.
Thank you for the book and the AF system explanation ....love your videos as I am also a Nikon shooter and whenever I hit a tunnel with a particular type of action photography in wildlife...this Focusing system gets me to the best possible way to shoot it. ...
Thank you Steve for the Nikon AF Modes ! This is my 6th times watching this video. Last one I learned about group and today I will work on single mode. Thanks again ! Too bad you are not sports shooter i would learn lot more from you.
Hi Steve. I am a photographer as a hobby for many years, I see Thy video for Nikon and I have bought Your PDF book on the secrets to Nikon autofocus. Very nice and interesting. Greetings Franco
This video was such a tremendous help to me that I ordered the book so that I could learn more. Thank you for presenting Autofocus in such a succinct and helpful fashion!
Oh my god, I'm so stupid. When you off-handedly said 'so long as the shutter button is half-pressed', I tried it, and finally realized that my camera _does_ have autofocus after using it for literally 6 months. I took this thing to Bali and back taking only manual-focus pictures and now I finally find out that it does work with AF-S. You live and learn I guess.
Thanks, Steve. I finally understand exactly what the dynamic modes do. I had read the manual, and I had searched for more information online, but it was not clear until I saw this video.
Thank you!

Thanks a lot Steve again for this wonderful session.
Thanks! If you like the video, wait till you see the Nikon AF Guide (e-book) I'm writing (out late Jan / Early Feb) :)
Wow, that would be fantastic!!! Eagerly waiting for it.......!

Wow - just learned more in 12 minutes than in 4 years playing with my D810.
Dude tell me about it. Like I started playing with the dynamics while watching the video and had all these light bulb moments go off
I have a d810 and am thinking manual focus might be good ...
me too haha, and 2 years playing with d810 too
Beautifully explained. I've looked at all manner of sources to clearly explain the multitude of options for AF and thanks to you I finally get it. Great work.

Thank you for providing TOP SHELF-Quality knowledge, as well as your real life scenarios for ENVIRONMENT/SCENARIO usage.

Great work!
Thanks for the kind words and book purchase :)
Steve is one of the BEST photography teachers out there and if you are a Nikon user, his tutorials AND books are invaluable!
Fantastic video Steve. I re-watch it every year or so to refresh my memory on all the Nikon AF features that I don't use on a regular basis. Great work.
This guy makes the best videos compared to the other TH-camrs who dont actually seem to shoot
Thank you, Steve! You basically distilled everything that has been written in many books in a 12-minute video!
Another exceptionally well done video Steve. Your ability to provide concise and easily understood content in short order (I always appreciate how well you “get to the point”) is nothing short of amazing!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, expertise and experience with us amateur enthusiasts.

Hello Steve,
After watching your video I just bought, downloaded and browsed quickly the "Secrets To Stunning Wildlife Photography". What a great piece of reading. Simply on point. Thank you very much.
Always enough light for a picture
Sven
Thanks so much!
You have provided a very useful tutorial and taken away much of the complexity, thanks Steve!
I just love your videos! You are my go-to source for info when I am trying to make decisions or learn about settings, and more. You are like the infinite database of insight into all things photography!
You have a gift - thanks for sharing it with us! I have learned more watching your videos than any other means in regards to my new D850
This is the absolute best tutorial on this sometimes confusing AF system! Thanks so much for creating this easy to understand video. Beautiful shots also.
Having just went from a Canon t5i to a Nikon D800 (my first full frame!) I found this video incredibly helpful. Keep up the good work :)
Glad I could help!
I know this is an old video but I own D7200 and I am learning about focus modes. This video really helped me a lot!
You have new subscriber 👍
Thanks so much for the tips! I’m a beginner struggling to master video on my D3300 (definitely not the best for vid) and your videos have helped me understand so much more about using my camera better. Cheers!
Awesome explanation , plain simple and straightforward information with carisma communicating topics .
thanks you so much for sharing your own experience in photography.
I`m an amateur photographer an it comes very handy to know some tips like this .
This is an excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to explain what can often times be incredibly confusing. Subscribed!
I've been on dynamic 51 thinking it was what allowed me to use all 51 points 😭 finally I can nail those eyes!
Always clear and concise with great tips Steve. I'll look for your book.
Great Instruction Steve.. you made something that was fuzzy for me before clear now. Keep doing what you do!
Thanks for this, Steve. Excellent work. By far the best explanation I've seen of what the different focus modes represent.
So clearly explained - finally I understand why my shots of hares and planes never seem to be in focus! Great job.
Thank you. After many years I can now truly say i understand my AF modes. In particular why D51 my not be a good choice.
I have both your books and I enjoy them. I also enjoy this as a companion reminder to them. You do good work Steve, thanks!
Thanks!
I’m noob in photography. This video is very handy. I watched it from time to time
I was so frustrated with my D7500, I thought it was a faulty one. I just then configured the AF to be more like what I was used to on my old D90 and now I'm very happy, thanks to you!
Steve, Love all your tips so buying your book was a no brainer. If you are on the fence on buying I say go for it. Packed with amazing tips, some review and lots of great images.
Great info, great presentation, nice and concise with samples and graphic illustrations to boot. This is how an instruction video is made. Well done!
Just purchased the e-book to support your work here. I bet it's worth the money too. Thanks for your excellent videos!
Well done! Easy to understand and full of valuable information! Thank you so much!
Great explanation of the AF Focus points like D9, 3D, Group, etc. I didn't understand them until I saw this video. Thank you!
Brilliant video! One of the most educational videos I’ve watched for photography!
Best Nikon AF mode video on YT
This was the best explanation of Nikon AF modes I've ever seen. Thank you Steve.
Hi Steve.
I am a photographer as a hobby for many years, I see Thy video for Nikon and I have bought Your PDF book on the secrets to Nikon autofocus.
Very nice and interesting.
Greetings
Franco
This video was such a tremendous help to me that I ordered the book so that I could learn more. Thank you for presenting Autofocus in such a succinct and helpful fashion!
I was confused as to the difference between the different dynamic AF. Now I understand. Thank you so much!
Phenomenal video. Very useful and to the point. Nicely done. Learnt so much🙏🙏
I think this is a great tutorial, helped me figure a lot of the stuff I had read in the user manual but did not quite know how to apply. Thanks Steve.
First video I found which is actually clear and helpful in this matter. Thank you very much!
Corrected my thoughts on Dynamic modes. Much appreciated. Top Class Steve.
Thanks, Steve. I finally understand exactly what the dynamic modes do. I had read the manual, and I had searched for more information online, but it was not clear until I saw this video.
Omg af has so many options so confusing but this vid did help a lot
Great video, really clears up a lot of things about AF without having to wade through the manual picking up snippets.
Thank you, Sir! You've pointed out exactly how to fix what's been frustrating me for so long on my D800.
..and D810...
