Nice footage not many people know Iowa’s were purposely built with extra fuel bunkers not only to act as torpedo protection and spaced armor while empty but could also refuel its own escorts while at sea
I would give anything in the world to be a part of the crew of any of the Iowas, regardless of the time period. They are just amazing battleships. I love those bow shots of the Wisconsin cutting through the water like that. The Iowa-class always looked so graceful when going through the water. Still wish battleships were still in commission, though.
And will bounce you all over the sea in the same weather that a Battleship just plows thru. The ones you really have to feel sorry for are the Tin Can Sailors. Even mild seas can be bad.
lol... the iowa class was a very nice riding vessel in heavy seas. wet, yes, but who cares? They were designed to go anywhere, in any weather and kick ass.
Niclas Johansson yeah they were, they were specifically designed to cut through the water like butter and it’s bow was very much streamlined and was designed for heavy seas
Heavy seas were no problem for an Iowa. Any Battleship ever made would be taking water over the bow in weather like this, and they are designed for it, and it gives them no trouble at all. Iowa can fight in any weather that any other Battleship can, and in weather that some probably can't.

Wow...just so breathtaking. So nostalgic seen faces I've never known but sure their actions gave us all this piece of freedom.
Awesome footage, thank you for sharing 👌🏻
The Destroyer is the USS Halsey-Powell. The guys were all hospitalized after the war due to rust forming on their iron balls.

Iowa class was an incredible ship series.

Anyone know what Essex-class carrier that is steaming abeam at 7:00? Kinda wondering if she could be my Dad's old carrier, the Lexington (CV-16).
CaesarInVa That would indeed be the “Lady Lex”
Firing one of the aft 50 cals from the Wisconsin is probably the most fun you can have!
White shoes with no socks, barefoot, hats worn like lampshades...love it.
2:41 what are they pulling doe?
My Dad was likely
aboard ship when that was shot...
Iowa class has bassically fletchers on each side
I now see what everyone means when they mention that the bow of the Iowa's ship a lot of water over the deck
My uncle was a GM on this ship
Underway refueling of a FLETCHER. Neat. TNX.
Man put me on a carrier, it's drier than a battleship or destroyer.

get ready to hurl - try that ride way up inside the bow -- true test of your sea legs and stomach
U need kept that ship afloat..
You'll learn to respect the sea if you're serving on 686.
United States firepower at it's best!!!!!!
The Iowa class was NOT made for heavy seas

They most certainly were!! I served on the New Jersey for almost 3 years back in the eighties. She was very steady in heavy seas.
