    This was such a joy to watch. As a collector myself, it's so fascinating to see its beginnings. The story behind an object is always what brings its value - especially for someone who can't afford much! 🙂

    I miss the traditional format of documentaries that concentrated solely on the subject matter using slides of book plates & photographs. Typically these documentaries had less emphasis on the narrator and non relevant scenery and not one minute was wasted.

    This is quite inspiring. I am going to collect curiosities. I might do it without spending any money, just with things I can find or old things from charity shops etc. I might suggest it to my friends too. It could be an entertainment for us over winter. Or we could make things maybe.

    • @Bluebelle51
      @Bluebelle51 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I took inspiration from the old time "freak shows" and made some lovely (terrifying) curiosities. A "hatchling" made from an egg shell and baby doll bits with a lizard legs and tail etc, a "shrunken head" I made from a dollar tree skull
      along some small alabaster jars I picked up at a flea market ($1 for the pair, so they're small), a carved wooden needle holder from Bulgaria (thrift shop)
      You can have so much fun making weird things and collecting

    Ahhhhh ! The Obsession with Curiosities, Collections, and Collectibles feeds that part of us, whether to create an effect and reaction on others or to ourselves. Why ? The Human Condition ! A material world of Sight, Smell, Taste, Touch, and Sound that brings about recall in one's self or others in that certain way.

    There is more to the early origins of this than just collecting. It is linked to the ancient Art of Memory, particularly the Memory Theatre of Giulio Camillo, who was one of the famous famous men in Europe in the 16th century. See Chapter 6 in Frances Yates' The Art of Memory.

      good point, it was mindblowing in a way we cant imagine, of course also it was very dangerous too, not like now where tourists are greeted happily, in fact there was probably great trepidation upon arriving in an unknown or barely known land, something we also cant imagine today.
