Dan, this is common place in my country. We all watch out for eachother and unfortunately all of the crimes committed are by foreigners who come for a holiday.... last year an American from California came and murdered a family of six. That Californian didn't make it out of the village part of him went missing in a river near by. Strangely no one cared to call the police until the next day when a farmer found that Californians head. Too bad eh.

@Mark Hepworth Here's why we have to come to this conclusion. We have a hard time passing sensible gun legislation to keep guns out of criminals hands or people who mentally shouldn't own a gun. Whatever gun regulations are passed they happen to be in the same areas where the District Attorney's do not prosecute people (or give light sentences) to people who commit gun crimes. So people have to take matters into their own hands.

Yet another perfect example of the need for gun ownership for citizens out in the public. It's estimated that defensive gun use saves over 2 million lives annually. You'll definitely never hear that stat from the media or politicians though. To me carrying a gun with me every single day everywhere I go is no different than putting on my seatbelt. I just do it automatically and I'd rather have it and not need it than vice versa. Remember, police will NEVER be there when you really need them. We are all responsible for our own self defense.

This is exactly how we can reduce crime and overbearing police presence at the same time. Americans have nothing to be guilty about if they choose to own and carry firearms. It is our God given right to use tools available to us for personal safety. Let the criminals fear the public they've been terrorizing all this time. Guns aren't scary once you get used to them. As a matter of fact, practicing with your firearm is actually very fun to be honest. If you've ever been to a range or in the country with folks shooting guns everyone is typically smiling from ear to ear having a great time. If communities stick together and stay vigilant crime will necessarily stop occurring in those areas with the same frequency.
