  • We brought our RV to Quartzsite in Arizona and stayed off-grid for 12 nights on BLM land. It was our first time boondocking!
    ⬇ ⬇ ⬇ ⬇
    Did you know that boondocking is dispersed camping on public land? We always wanted to try it, but hesitated because we didn’t know where to start. We have a big toy hauler RV and we didn’t want to get stuck somewhere or be in the wrong spot by mistake. After chatting with people at the Xcapers BASH meetup about boondocking, we decided to take the leap and join a group going to Quartzsite, Arizona. It also helped that we had just finished our solar panel upgrade, so we were excited to see how it would work out!
    We stayed on Plomosa road, about 10 minutes north of Quartzsite. It was very big rig friendly and we were able to get in and our with no issues. We were there during the RV show, so we got to see some of that as well. In general it was busy in the area at that time of year, with lots of RVs scattered around all of the dispersed camping areas. If you want solitude, there are definitely quieter areas in Arizona than Quartzsite in the winter. It was perfect for us as first time boondockers though, so we were very happy to be there!
    We finally got to use our water bladder, which allowed us to top up our water supply midway through our stay. After we left, we stopped by the RV Relief service station in Quartzsite to dump our very full black and grey tanks. I would highly recommend their service, it was very clean and big rig friendly, with everything you need to resupply - dump service, potable water, propane and ice.

    We did not know that this was your first boondocking experience, how great and honored that we could be part of that. Loved the video and saw @ancestraladventures as well as Stacy and Garys Rig. I sent the link over to them too.- Kyle and Michelle

    We love to boondock in that area. So beautiful. We also have solar panels, so we only run our generator for the microwave or the toaster -- that's it! I love the quietness of solar energy, especially compared to the noise & stench of a generator.

      Yup, 100% agree! It's the best way to go if you're boondocking any bit at all.

    I just watched this video after finding it on TH-cam like the other one about Quartzsite, Arizona. Very nice place looks like to go and camp out for a few weeks. Thank you for the video!

    It is funny, I have field worked in Mojave, Sonoran and Great Basin deserts for over 30+ years and lived in tents or slept in the back of my truck. Yes it is great to boondock in the Desert if you have a nice camper/van/RV set up. But when the heat arrives, or the desert winds kick up it is best to head to a nice shady and closed area

    I did not know you two had a TH-cam channel. I was camped one spot over from you in a motorhome in Pahrump back in May. Hope you both are doing well.

    So you climb on the roof to check seals and stuff? Doesn't your weight on just the two little areas of your feet put a lot of strain on the roof and potentially create more problems than it's worth? I wouldn't think roofs were made for frequent traffic and if it's going to leak, tromping on it will surely get it there quicker!

    • @slowlifefastbike
      @slowlifefastbike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ours is rated for walking on! Grand Design even say in the owner's manual that you should inspect all roof sealants every three months, plus a bunch of other maintenance on components accessed via the roof (fans, air conditioners, solar, etc).
      I would be more concerned about the ladder screws to be honest!

    Will your solar panels run your air conditioning during the hottest part of the day or do you run a generator.?

    • @slowlifefastbike
      @slowlifefastbike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have a 3000w inverter and enough lithium batteries that we could run one AC unit for a short period without the generator. We don't have enough solar to do that without using the generator at some point to recharge the batteries though. The generator is a lot more power, so we'd use that if it was very hot and we needed to run more AC or use other appliances at the same time.

    thank you for video how's progress registered then permit tag? my plan to go comming November

    • @slowlifefastbike
      @slowlifefastbike  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are two options:
      1. BLM camping areas, which are free but limited to 14 days stay. You typically register with a host at the entry road, and get a paper to pin up in your RV with the dates you're allowed to be in that camping area.
      2. LTVA area to the south (Long Term Visitor Area). This one requires buying a permit for a 2 week stay or for 7 months (which I believe gives you access to LTVA in other places too). This include garbage, potable water and dump station access, so it's more convenient.
      Hope this helps!

    About what month we’re you visiting? Temps? I know it gets real busy & crowded there during winter months. Nice video!

    • @slowlifefastbike
      @slowlifefastbike  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This was in January! It was the busiest it gets in that area, which is part of the appeal in some ways - it was fun to feel part of this big gathering of RVs in the desert. I think it was around the 60s in the day and then 40s at night. Quite cold at night but not freezing.

    Obviously the land is cheap and unsuitable for anything else but there is just not enough green to go around.

    You Joke! That isn't 'boon docking' Not hardly. You just bought a house that's got wheels.

    • @slowlifefastbike
      @slowlifefastbike  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm sure there's a few definitions of boondocking, this certainly isn't way out in the boonies that's for sure! For me boon docking is self-sufficient dispersed camping on public land, regardless of whether you're in an RV, van, tent or simply the open sky.
