It is situated in a standalone hill encircled by Sahyadri range thereby providing a natural impregnable existence in the ancient history.
Shivaji Maharaj built most of the structure with the help of engineer Hiroji Indulkar. This became the capital in the year 1674.
The fort is situated at 820 metres (2,700 ft) above base level and 1356 m above sea level.
