Nice treatise about the venerable 8255 PPI. Well done! That is my first choice general I/O part; rugged, inexpensive, easy to understand, minimal support circuitry/software. It works well with most 8-bit microprocessors: Z80, 6802, 6809, 6502, 8080, 8088, 8085, etc. I REALLY like that it has programmable interrupt output(s) if needed, but those can simply be used as general I/O. Quite a versatile part.
