Perfect timing. I'm headed out today to get an aerator so i can overseed and throw down some x-soil and humic 12 etc. I can't thank you enough for all the info you provide. My lawn loves you, but my neighbors hate you 👍, my lawn is untouchable in the neighborhood.
Great opportunity for new homeowners with no sod...just dirt. Literally start from the ground up, applying soil additives, grading, the works. A good amount of work, depending on lot size, but worth it in the long run. Total control from the get go. ~ mike
One of the best videos of the year JP! No lie. Product videos have their place but soil biology is relevant no matter who you are and which products you use. Thanks for pouring into us, yet again. 👍
I live on a farmstead that is over 100 years old. Over the years the lawn is gotten VERY lumpy and I'm nearly breaking my jaw driving across the lawn with the lawn mower. What is the tool to accomplish lawn leveling. I'm not interested in using hand tools as the lawn is probably several acres. I need a operation to run at some sort of scale. I have tractors and skid loaders available.
Great timing John, as I go into spring I want to manage my soil more with liquid ferts, just done home kit PH soil reading on My NPK 5.8 so will spoon feed with liquid lime to increase to neutral range however will be doing a lab test samples next week to get a much more reading overall and produce a plan before my spring renovation on my burmuda grass taking me forward over this season and next
Great video John. This year I did a test renovation on a 1.6k area as practice for my a 12k next year. I know my yard is very sandy and my soil tests come back fair for most marcos but has low OM. What is realistically the best way to approach increasing the OM in such a large area. Peat moss or biochar in that big of an area would be quite an undertaking. Is it enough to just mulch grass and leaves consistently to condition the soil slowly? Any insight is greatly appreciated!
Another great learning video. My grass is looking good even through upper eighties and 90゚ weather. I have concentrated on soil conditioning this year and using organic Fert., Humic acids , liquid kelp
That is something you can do and would fit a bit more into a carbohydrate and protein soil and plant food. You start tipping more towards nitrogen use with those
I swear TH-cam has a mind reader lol, Loved the video. I'm currently prepping my soil for a Fall 2021 Renovation. Currently have TONS of weeds, with no grass basically. I'm adding Lime and Fertilizer according to my soil test. Do you think I'm wasting my time adding fertilizer to a lawn full of weeds when I plan on renovating next fall? (any responses are welcomed)
My Man 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾We needed that information. NOW, if you have time we need you to go back to going live in the mornings so that we can ask you some live questions.
Most probably one of the most important lawn care videos out there right now. Thank you! Would be interesting to tie this together with potential consequences of using soluble high salt fertilizers.
Would love a cheaper alternative to Humichar for a soil conditioner down here in GA. Carbon Pro-G is always out of stock where I'm at plus siteOne is far away for me. Would love to see something from you guys in your product lineup personally. Also first year really getting into my own lawn care. Great video and info!
Better to do a soil test now or at the beginning of the season? I've been using Humic-12, RGS, and Air8 for a few apps now - would like the soil to absorb before I send my test to you for evaluation.
John would you say the same for planting a tree? Mix in ..say a bag of black kow compost into the planting zone for better root/tree growth overall? Same concept?
When I worked for a nursery (25 years ago now!) we planted every tree with a compost/wood chip mix, gypsum for the high pH clay, and rooting hormones. This would be mixed with the native soil and placed back around the root ball
@@Lawncology Thanks for the response! I have a mix of KBG, fescue and rye, all fall season types reel mowing at 1-1.5 inches all season long. I was told verti-cutting the stolons promote lateral growth, but could not find much info on this online
How long do liquid treatments last compared to granular treatments? For instance a liquid humic vs a granular humic. I realize that a liquid would offer a more immediate response than a granular but over a longer time span of several years is there an advantage of using one over the other when it comes to permanently altering your soil?
07/29/2021 was looking somewhere to send you a photo of my yard live in Missouri cool season grass just started your program this year wanted to share with you the results and our hundred and ten heat index conditions still looks beautiful
I need humic 12 in like a 5 gallon bucket at a time. I have 30k sqft and take care of another 43k sqft yard. how can I get what I'm looking for and not break the bank with the smaller size on everyone's site?
John, do you have any input about keeping St Aug grass healthy under oak trees? I am having a hard time keeping my front lawn healthy. Last year was beautiful (oak tree is 25 years old), this year it has being a big challenge, getting thinner and thinner .... I follow you and LCN for a season, and I need some help man ...... please
Lawncology I do have Floragreene, and I have feed the tree, but I if could upload a picture, you would understand better. The front lawn is in the middle of two huge oak trees, the left one is in my neighbors house 10 - 15 ft away, the right one is on the other side of my driveway 20 ft away from the lawn. Allyn said it could be the salts from the leaves changing the soil conditions, so my question is, what changes in the soil could be happening, and how to fix it? Thanks man
That is the main initial conversation of the video. Soil conditioning can fit into multiple categories depending on the desired outcome. Nutrient additions to the soil would be considered conditioning. Aeration would fit more into a cultural practice category but adding material after aeration would benconditioning.
I am wondering if you could have organic products in WDG technology cos i know organic stuff are not broken down by water thats why am asking, just for clarification?
I'm in a new subdivision and they used alot of clay and thin layer of top soil it grows great but i have to fertilize but my grandma's yard grows wayyy better than mine she uses nothing on her lawn thick and green lol I want to fix my soil but I know that will be very expensive I use the next products
I thought for sure there would be a mention of Air-8. Great product in the spring and fall. With a combination of 18-0-1, Humic and 0-0-2 through out the year, my roots/soil and lawn really improved over the past 2 years. Great stuff! Any time frame on your book?
Lawncology I appreciate that John...I’m with ya brother....say the word soil and I’m all up in it....this was rad dude. Hyped me, made me wanna re-visit my own soil vids (which aren’t nearly as eloquent) 🤝
It all depends on what your take down rate is or another way to put it is how much clipping are you cutting off each time? If you are cutting a lot off, bagging every so often maybe better
The one i've found is called purity and it's great for suppressing worm casts well it's 100% no more casts Its the tea seed oil apparently that does it.
Lawncology yeah it's being marketed as a soil conditioner here in the uk as we currently don't have any worm cast chemicals they where all banned a few years ago but it works i applied it two weeks ago not had a single cast
I was going to rent a core aerator, then 'surface treat' with dirt/compost/char; however I relized that would most likely just kill off my hard to grow areas(which are finally doing well) while not really improving the soil down deep in my main focus area(a badminton court I want to put in) so instead I've decided to pretty much leave the hard to grow areas mostly alone(only over seed with fine fescue in shade, and patch/reseed sun baked kbg) then go with my tiller hardcore on the 1000²foot court and really mix that stuff in and level....but then just seed with *annual* rye grass this fall, again till in the coming spring and another 'cover crop', and likely do it again summer before I decide on a more permanent perennial grass type to put down in a year at next fall time - so this video is exactly what I needed, to know I'm headed on a possible course; thinking that the life and death of the cheap annual rye will be working on the soil, as that 44'X20' court area needs the most help(hard cracked clay and silt that I just took out a pine tree; yes I had some grass already growing there, but not well) for now I'm just finishing my 'fall care' to the other lawns first, so I'm not trying to do everything at once; then I can go nuts on the badminton court area which will take awhile

Samuel Asamoah there are wettable powders that are organic.
